Interactions of di- and trihydroxybenzenes with transition metals and their biological consequences.

Small dihydroxy- and trihydroxybenzenes are polyphenolic compounds found in plant-based materials and formed by the human gut microbiota from other dietary phenolics. This study aimed to explore how 5 structurally related hydroxybenzenes interact with the biologically relevant metals iron and copper under various (patho)physiological pH conditions, focusing on their chelating and reducing abilities, influence on the metal-driven Fenton reactions, and their role in copper-induced hemolysis. Only compounds with hydroxyl groups in an ortho-position, specifically pyrogallol and 4-methylcatechol, w…

Unsupervised tracking of local and collective defects dynamics in metals under deformation.

Metals owe their unique mechanical properties to how defects emerge and propagate within their crystal structure under stress. However, the mechanisms leading from the early emerging (local) defects to the amplification of dislocations (collective plastic events) are not easy to track. Here, using tensile-stress atomistic simulations of a copper lattice as a case study, we revisit this classical problem under a new perspective based on local dynamics rather than on purely structural arguments. We use a data-driven approach that allows tracking how local fluctuations emerge and accumulate in th…

Diabetes and Skin Health: Insights into Autoimmunity, Metals, and AGE-Mediated Disorders.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) significantly impacts systemic and skin health, with advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), metal imbalances, and immune dysfunction emerging as central drivers of skin-related complications. Furthermore, dysregulation of essential metals like zinc, copper, and iron exacerbates oxidative damage and immune dysfunction, fostering a detrimental skin environment. Autoimmune processes, increasingly recognized in both type 1 and type 2 DM, contributes towards dermatological conditions such as bullous pemphigoid and vitiligo. Emerging therapeutic strategies, including AGE inhi…

Heavy Metals in Umbilical Cord Blood: Effects on Epigenetics and Child Development.

Heavy metals like arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and lead are harmful pollutants that can change how our genes are regulated without altering the DNA sequence, specifically through a process called DNA methylation (DNAm) at 5-methylcytosine, an epigenetic mark that we will focus on in this review. These changes in DNAm are most sensitive during pregnancy, a critical time for development when these modifications can affect how traits are expressed. Historically, most research on these environmental effects has focused on adults, but now there is more emphasis on studying the impacts during early de…

Ab Initio Computation of Auger Decay in Heavy Metals: Zinc about It.

We report the first coupled-cluster study of Auger decay in heavy metals. The zinc atom is used as a case study due to its relevance to the Auger emission properties of the 67Ga radionuclide. Coupled-cluster theory combined with complex basis functions is used to describe the transient nature of the core-ionized zinc atom. We also introduce second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory as an alternative method for computing partial Auger decay widths. Scalar-relativistic effects are included in our approach for computing Auger electron energies by means of the spin-free exact two-component o…

Electrophysiological Analysis of Retinal Organoid Development Using 3D Microelectrodes of Liquid Metals.

Despite of the substantial potential of human-derived retinal organoids, the degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) during maturation limits their utility in assessing the functionality of later-born retinal cell subtypes. Additionally, conventional analyses primarily rely on fluorescent emissions, which limits the detection of actual cell functionality while risking damage to the 3D cytoarchitecture of organoids. Here, an electrophysiological analysis is presented to monitor RGC development in early to mid-stage retinal organoids, and compare distinct features with fully-mature mouse r

Analytical Determination of Heavy Metals in Human Seminal Plasma-A Systematic Review.

Infertility is a growing concerning health problem affecting around 15% of couples worldwide. Conventional semen parameters have limited accuracy for male infertility potential determination. Current advances in the understanding of male infertility indicate that environmental and occupational exposure to chemical contaminants are important etiological factors leading to infertility problems. In this context, some heavy metals (HMs) can be considered as endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), thus altering the seminal quality. This systematic review aims to summarize the key points to detect an…

Dual-Modulated Heterojunctions for Anti-Interference Sensing of Heavy Metals in Seawater.

Trace analyte detection in a complex environment such as in seawater is usually challenging for classic redox-based electrochemical sensors since the matrix effect of high salinity and various interfering species with similar redox properties can generate false positive/negative signals, thus impacting the sensitivity and specificity of the sensors. In this work, unlike redox-based approaches, we propose a novel sensing mode that relies on dual-modulated interfacial energy barriers of heterojunctions. By constructing the hierarchical structure of Ni/TiO2/porous-reduced graphene oxide/chitosan

Electrochemical Reduction of Gaseous Nitrogen Oxides on Transition Metals at Ambient Conditions.

Mitigating nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions is critical to tackle global warming and improve air quality. Conventional NOx abatement technologies for emission control suffer from a low efficiency at near ambient temperatures. Herein, we show an electrochemical pathway to reduce gaseous NOx that can be conducted at high reaction rates (400 mA cm-2) under ambient conditions. Various transition metals are evaluated for electrochemical reduction of NO and N2O to reveal the role of electrocatalyst in determining the product selectivity. Specifically, Cu is highly selective toward NH3 formation with >…

Toxic metals that interact with thiol groups and alteration in insect behavior.

Toxic metals, such as mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and copper (Cu), are widespread in the biosphere, and human activities have contributed to their continuous release into the ecosystems. Metal-induced toxicity has been extensively studied in mammals; however, the effects of these metals on insects' behavior have been explored to far lesser degree. As the main mechanism of toxicity, the cationic metals, explored in this review, have high affinity for thiol-containing molecules, disrupting the function of several proteins and low-molecular-weight thiol-containing molecules. Existing l…
