Comparing online wrist and forearm EMG-based control using a rhythm game-inspired evaluation environment.

Objective. The use of electromyogram (EMG) signals recorded from the wrist is emerging as a desirable input modality for human-machine interaction (HMI). Although forearm-based EMG has been used for decades in prosthetics, there has been comparatively little prior work evaluating the performance of wrist-based control, especially in online, user-in-the-loop studies. Furthermore, despite different motivating use cases for wrist-based control, research has mostly adopted legacy prosthesis control evaluation frameworks.Approach.Gaining inspiration from rhythm games and the Schmidt's law speed-accu

Different Aspects of Physical Load in Small-Sided Field Hockey Games.

Wilmes, E, de Ruiter, CJ, van Leeuwen, RR, Banning, LF, van der Laan, D, and Savelsbergh, GJP. Different aspects of physical load in small-sided field hockey games. J Strength Cond Res 38(2): e56-e61, 2024-Running volumes and acceleration/deceleration load are known to vary with different formats of small-sided games (SSGs) in field hockey. However, little is known about other aspects of the physical load. Therefore, the aim of this study was to gain a more thorough understanding of the total physical load in field hockey SSGs. To that end, 2 different SSGs (small: 5 vs. 5, ∼100 m 2 per player

EEG Based Dynamic Functional Connectivity Analysis in Mental Workload Tasks With Different Types of Information.

The accurate evaluation of operators' mental workload in human-machine systems plays an important role in ensuring the correct execution of tasks and the safety of operators. However, the performance of cross-task mental workload evaluation based on physiological metrics remains unsatisfactory. To explore the changes in dynamic functional connectivity properties with varying mental workload in different tasks, four mental workload tasks with different types of information were designed and a newly proposed dynamic brain network analysis method based on EEG microstate was applied in this paper.

Identifying clinically meaningful severity categories for PROMIS pediatric measures of anxiety, mobility, fatigue, and depressive symptoms in juvenile idiopathic arthritis and childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus.

PURPOSE: A key limitation to widespread adoption of patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures is the lack of interpretability of scores. We aim to identify clinical severity thresholds to distinguish categories of no problems, mild, moderate, and severe along the PROMIS® Pediatric T-score metric for measures of anxiety, mobility, fatigue, and depressive symptoms for use in populations with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE). METHODS: We used a modified standard setting methodology from educational testing to identify clinical severity thr

Training Youth With SCI to Improve Efficiency and Biomechanics of Wheelchair Propulsion: A Pilot Study.

Background: Long-term manual wheelchair users are at an increased risk of developing upper extremity (UE) joint pain and injuries due to the repetitive nature of wheelchair propulsion. Youth who sustain spinal cord injuries (SCIs) may be at even greater risk due to the many years they may be wheelchair dependent. There has been a decreasing trend in duration of initial rehabilitation, therefore little time is spent on training of proper wheelchair propulsion. An objective evaluation along with proper training may help prevent the risk of UE pain and injuries over time. Objective: To develop a

National Quality Measures in Perinatal Medicine.

There are numerous measures of perinatal quality endorsed by national agencies such as the National Quality Forum (NQF). The sheer number of metrics may lead to confusion about what these measures truly assess, and how to interpret variation in these measures across hospitals, health care systems, and geographic regions. This review presents a conceptual model for the numerous validated measures, an overview of the types of measures endorsed for perinatal quality by NQF in 2016, and potential measures absent from endorsement by these national bodies.

Development and validation of the SYSU-score for MRI-based transmural healing assessment in Crohn's disease: a dual-center study.

OBJECTIVES: Standardizing magnetic resonance enterography (MRE)-defined transmural healing (TH) remains challenging in Crohn's disease (CD) despite its prognostic superiority. We aimed to evaluate seven conventional MRE-defined TH criteria and develop a machine-learning-optimized model for improved TH assessment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this double-center study, 467 active CD patients with 1263 MRE scans were stratified into three cohorts. Cohort 1 (n = 341) enabled retrospectively dual-metric comparison (attainment rate/prognostic protection) of seven MRE-defined TH criteria. Leveraging th

Oral Health and the SDGs: Unlocking Missed Potential for Global Health Gains.

INTRODUCTION: Oral health is a crucial yet neglected aspect of the global health and development agenda. Although oral diseases affect almost half of the world's population, they receive little attention and public investment by policymakers, undermining progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to 1) analyse the SDG framework through an oral health lens, identifying links across goals and targets, and 2) quantify the reduction in oral disease burden required by 2030 under a counterfactual status quo projection and 2 policy benchmark scenarios: one-t

Disentangling white-matter damage from physiological fibre orientation dispersion in multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis leads to diffuse damage of the central nervous system, affecting also the normal-appearing white matter. Demyelination and axonal degeneration reduce regional fractional anisotropy in normal-appearing white matter, which can be routinely mapped with diffusion tensor imaging. However, the standard fractional anisotropy metric is also sensitive to physiological variations in orientation dispersion of white matter fibres. This complicates the detection of disease-related damage in large parts of cerebral white matter where microstructure physiologically displays a high degree o

Balanced approach to serious injury and fatality prevention: Exploring empirical relationships between short and long-term measures of safety performance.

INTRODUCTION: Safety is increasingly being defined not by the absence of harm, but by the presence of capacity to control critical hazards. However, widely used metrics like the rate of recordable incidents can obscure true exposure to conditions during work that lead to serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs), especially when these metrics are used in isolation. To address this gap, we examined whether two new short-term measures of SIFs, namely the quality of pre-job safety briefs (PJSB quality) and high-energy control assessments (HECA), are statistically related to conventional and alternat
