The impact of common micronutrient deficiencies on iodine and thyroid metabolism: the evidence from human studies.

Deficiencies of micronutrients are highly prevalent in low-income countries. Inadequate intake of iodine impairs thyroid function and results in a spectrum of disorders. Other common deficiencies of micronutrients such as iron, selenium, vitamin A, and possibly zinc may interact with iodine nutrition and thyroid function. Randomised controlled intervention trials in iodine- and iron-deficient populations have shown that providing iron along with iodine results in greater improvements in thyroid function and volume than providing iodine alone. Vitamin A supplementation given alone or in combina…

Effect of maternal multiple micronutrient supplements on cord blood hormones: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth improves in pregnant women who take daily maternal multiple micronutrients [United Nations International Multiple Micronutrient Preparation (UNIMMAP)] rather than iron and folic acid (IFA) alone. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to test whether such an effect was mediated by changes in concentrations of cord hormones. DESIGN: In a double-blind, controlled trial carried out in Burkina Faso, we randomly assigned 1426 pregnant women to receive UNIMMAP or IFA supplements. We measured concentrations of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), leptin, insulin, free thyroxine, and…

Current maternal-infant micronutrient status and the effects on birth weight in the United Arab Emirates.

Micronutrient deficiencies exist among women of childbearing age in the United Arab Emirates but the effects of maternal micronutrient deficiency on fetal growth are not well documented. To investigate the association between micronutrients and birth weight, we measured maternal and cord blood micronutrients (vitamin A, C, D, and E) and ferritin in 84 term, singleton infants born to healthy Arab and South Asian women at Al-Ain hospital. Median serum ascorbic acid and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) concentrations were low in mothers and infants. In multivariate analysis, maternal serum 25-OHD cor…

Prevalence and severity of micronutrient deficiency: a cross-sectional study among adolescents in Sri Lanka.

In order to determine the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies (iron, zinc and folate) in Sri Lankan adolescent school children and the extent to which multiple micronutrient deficiencies exist in this population, a cross-sectional survey (2003) in the Galle district of the micronutrient and anthropometric status of 945 school children of ages 12-16 years was performed. The prevalence of anemia (Hb < 120.0 g/L) was 49.5% in males and 58.1% in females (overall 54.8%, gender difference, P = 0.004). In anemic children 30.2% of males and 47.8% of females were iron deficient (serum ferritin < 3

Serum and liver micronutrient antioxidants and serum oxidative stress in patients with chronic hepatitis C.

OBJECTIVES: The exact pathogenesis of liver injury and fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) is unclear. Free radicals play a role in CHC liver damage. Antioxidants (AO) (enzymatic and nonenzymatic) scavenge free radicals and prevent tissue injury. The aims of our study were to estimate serum levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), serum and liver levels of nonenzymatic fat-soluble AO, and to correlate the liver AO levels with the degree of inflammation and fibrosis on biopsy. METHODS: AO levels were estimated by high-pressure liquid chromatography in the pretreatment serum and liver biopsy specimen

Nutritional composition and micronutrient status of home made and commercial weaning foods consumed in Tanzania.

About 50% of young children in Tanzania suffer from protein-energy undernutrition (PEU) while more than 45% of children under the age of five suffer from various micronutrient deficiency disorders. The immediate cause of these conditions is inadequate intake and poor utilization of nutrients, which begins in the weaning period and amplifies in the subsequent years. This study was conducted to assess the potential of some home made and commercial weaning foods commonly consumed in Tanzania to supply adequate amounts of both macro- and micronutrients as recommended in the Tanzania and FAO/WHO Co…

Costs and benefits of replacing preventive antenatal iron and folic acid with multiple micronutrients in 25 low- and middle-income countries.

INTRODUCTION: Micronutrient deficiencies during pregnancy have serious consequences for both mother and child; thus the longstanding standard of care in low- and low-middle income countries (LMICs) has been daily prenatal iron-folic acid (IFA) supplementation. While prenatal multiple micronutrient supplements (MMSs) provide additional significant benefits in comparison to IFA supplements, the view that MMS is too expensive has hindered national MMS adoption. However, increased competition, volume procurement and the use of advanced purchase commitments have significantly reduced the cost of MM

Zinc Supplementation with or without Additional Micronutrients Does Not Affect Peripheral Blood Gene Expression or Serum Cytokine Level in Bangladeshi Children.

Preventive zinc supplementation provided as a stand-alone dispersible tablet, or via home fortification as multiple micronutrient powders (MNPs), has been considered a potential strategy to prevent zinc deficiency and improve health (including immune) outcomes among children in low- and middle-income countries. However, the impact of zinc supplementation on immune profiles has not been well characterized. We sought to define the effect of zinc supplementation on peripheral blood gene expression and cytokine levels among young children in Dhaka, Bangladesh. In a sub-study of a large randomized,
