VEGF-A stimulation of leukocyte adhesion to colonic microvascular endothelium: implications for inflammatory bowel disease.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by increased leukocyte recruitment and subsequent tissue damage. An increase in the density of the microvasculature of the colon during IBD has been suggested, leading to the concept that angiogenesis may play a pathological role in IBD. Increased tissue and serum levels of the angiogenic cytokine VEGF-A have been reported in cases of active IBD. In this study, we examined the hypothesis that VEGF-A exerts a proinflammatory effect on colon microvascular endothelium that contributes to colonic inflammation. Leukoc

Structural and functional abnormality of systemic microvessels in cardiac syndrome X.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Microvascular damage of coronary bed has been considered the main pathogenetic factor of cardiac syndrome X (chest pain, exercise-induced ischemic ST-segment changes and angiographically normal coronary arteries). Previous studies have demonstrated that vascular abnormalities are not confined to the heart, suggesting a peripheral vascular dysfunction. On the hypothesis of a generalized microvascular disturbance in cardiac syndrome X, we performed a morphologic and functional study of systemic microcirculation in patients with syndrome X compared to normal subjects. METHODS

Short-term poor glycemic control and retinal microvascular changes in pediatric Type 1 Diabetes patients in Singapore: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Poor glycemic control in Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) patients is strongly associated with an increased risk of diabetes-related microvascular complications later in life, but it is unclear whether short period of poor glycemic control in children with T1D can cause evident microvascular morphological changes long before any pathological manifestation. Our study aimed to investigate the longitudinal association between poor glycemic control and subsequent changes in retinal microvasculature, in a pilot study of 55 pediatric T1D patients from Singapore after a one-year follow-up. METHODS:

Morphometric analysis of the cerebral expression of ATP-binding cassette transporter protein ABCB1 in chronic schizophrenia: Circumscribed deficits in the habenula.

There is increasing evidence that microvascular abnormalities and malfunction of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) significantly contribute to schizophrenia pathophysiology. The ATP-binding cassette transporter ABCB1 is an important molecular component of the intact BBB, which has been implicated in a number of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. However, the regional and cellular expression of ABCB1 in schizophrenia is yet unexplored. Therefore, we studied ABCB1 protein expression immunohistochemically in twelve human post-mortem brain regions known to play a rol

Vascular Characteristics of Treatment-resistant and -responsive Actinic Keratosis Identified with Dynamic Optical Coherence Tomography.

Treatment-resistant actinic keratosis (AK) is of concern in clinical practice, often requiring retreatment. Microvascular assessments might help differentiate treatment-resistant from treatment-responsive AKs, enabling targeted treatment. Using dynamic optical coherence tomography, AK vascularization was investigated following daylight photodynamic therapy, comparing treatment-resistant with cleared AKs. AKs on face/scalp were graded according to the Olsen Classification Scheme and scanned with dynamic optical coherence tomography pre-treatment, and 3- and 12-months post-treatment. Employing d

Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome and Its Risk Factors Influence on Microvascular Complications in Patients With Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) long-term macrovascular and microvascular complications pose significant health risks and increase mortality. In DM patients, metabolic syndrome (MetSy) either precedes or coexists with the condition. Central obesity, poor glycemic control, hypertension, elevated triglycerides (TG), and low high-density lipoproteins (HDL-C) are the components of MetSy. The purpose of this study is to investigate related diabetic microvascular complications in type 1 DM (T1DM) by comparing them with type 2 DM (T2DM), determine potential risk factors, and estimate prevalence ba

Different microcirculatory patterns in patients with COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 ARDS: A multicenter cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: COVID-19 is a systemic illness with widespread microcirculatory involvement. Nevertheless, reports about the characteristics of sublingual microcirculation in patients with COVID-19 are controversial. In fact, total vascular density has been described as decreased, normal, or increased. Our goal was to assess comprehensively the sublingual microcirculation in patients with COVID-19, comparing it with that of patients with non-COVID-19 ARDS and with healthy volunteers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a multicenter cross-sectional study. We included mechanically ventilated patients wit

Long-term optic nerve head microvascular impairment after acute primary angle closure: an OCTA study.

PURPOSE: While previous studies documented transient reductions in fundus vessel density (VD) following acute primary angle closure (APAC), we investigated whether optic nerve head (ONH) and macular VD was lower long-term following APAC. The study aimed to describe long-term microvascular patterns after APAC and identify anatomical regions showing lower VD. METHODS: Resolved APAC, primary angle closure suspects (PACS), and age-sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled. Quantitative microvascular assessment was performed using spectral domain optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) sy

ApoA1/HDL and sepsis-associated vascular endothelial injury: a narrative review.

Sepsis remains a leading cause of global mortality, primarily driven by microvascular collapse stemming from severe vascular endothelial injury. Within this pathology, the dramatic depletion of Apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) and its carrier, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), is a hallmark feature. Despite being recognized as a prognostic biomarker, a comprehensive understanding of the ApoA1/HDL axis as an active participant and therapeutic target in endothelial protection remains fragmented. This review systematically synthesizes current evidence to reframe the ApoA1/HDL axis from a passive indicator

Short-term dietary copper deficiency does not inhibit angiogenesis in tumours implanted in striated muscle.

The effect of dietary copper deficiency on tumour growth, neovascularisation and microvascular integrity was studied in the rat cremaster muscle. Male, weanling Sprague-Dawley rats were fed purified diets which were copper deficient (< 0.5 micrograms g-1 of diet) or copper adequate (5 micrograms g-1 of diet). Seven days after initiation of diets, a chondrosarcoma was implanted in the cremaster muscle of each rat. Five, 10 or 20 days after tumour implantation, rats were anesthetised and their cremasters prepared for observation by intravital microscopy. Intraarterial injection of fluorescein is

Effects of physical stress on peroxide scavengers in normal and sickle cell trait erythrocytes.

Sickle cell trait subjects are potentially at risk with microvascular complications frequently associated with high altitude and extreme exertion. Studies conducted in our laboratory suggest that exposure of sickle cell trait subjects to treadmill exercise resulted in an increase not only in the susceptibility of red blood cells to oxidation but also in the density of RBC membrane. The trend of increased susceptibility of red cells to oxidation as a consequence of exercise was associated with relatively excessive production of H2O2, inefficient breakdown of H2O2 by GSH-Px- and catalase-catalyz
