After the observation of 2 horses with uveitis on a horse farm in the Minnesota River valley, 100 horses from this geographic area were given ophthalmologic examinations and were evaluated serologically for leptospirosis. A statistically significant (P less than 0.001) association was observed between the finding of antibodies against Leptospira interrogans serovar pomona and uveitis.

A retrospective analysis of 11 children with the diagnosis of Klippel-Feil syndrome treated at the University of Minnesota Hospital over a period of 20 years is presented. The salient features of the syndrome and its associated anomalies are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on its neurological aspects, particularly the potential risks of injury to the craniocervical junction and cervical spine. Guidelines for the management of these patients are suggested.

Serotypes and antimicrobial susceptibility of Salmonella's isolates from broiler production chain were determined. A total of 239 isolated strains from chicken, carcasses, breeding environments, and slaughter was analyzed by disk diffusion test, in the period of 2009 to 2010. For antibiotics with a high number of resistant strains, the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was performed. In 2003, the Minnesota Dental Practice Act was modified to allow dental hygienists and assistants to place amalgam, composite, glass ionomer, and stainless steel crowns. Raw-score means of the Cook-Medley Hostility scale are smaller in the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) normative group than in the MMPI normative group, and T scores are larger. The results contrast with those for the clinical scales but are consistent with results for some other scales. Reasons for the different patterns of MMPI and MMPI-2 scores are discussed.

Children who are dependent on medical technology present unique challenges to families and professionals who attempt to care for them at home. This longitudinal, exploratory study examines the placement threatening crises experienced over an eighteen-month period by four such families in Minnesota. The findings encourage development of a family support model of placement prevention for this population, as opposed to a crisis intervention model.

A 6-wk. cognitive behavioural program administered to 24 adolescent male offenders assigned to open custody and 5 to probation showed no mean differences on the Test of Nonverbal Intelligence, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, and the Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory. Significant correlations were found for the personality measures with pretreatment and posttreatment scores on the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory.

Interruption of the aortic arch and hypoplastic left heart syndrome in the same patient is exceptional. In the combined collections of the Registry of Cardiovascular Disease (St. Paul, Minnesota, U.S.A.) and the Registry of Congenital Heart Defects of the Rijksuniversiteit Gent (Gent, Belgium) three specimens were found with this unusual combination. These cases are herein described and compared with four similar cases previously reported in the literature.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement is a validated therapeutic option for severe symptomatic aortic stenosis. Dextrocardia with total situs inversus is a rare heart condition (1 in 12,000). We present an interesting case of transcatheter aortic valve replacement with a CoreValve Evolut R (Medtronic, Minneapolis, Minnesota) through a transfemoral approach in a patient with dextrocardia and situs inversus. Meningococcal disease outbreaks recently have occurred in several U.S. cities among men who are HIV-infected and who have had sex with other men. This article describes the first similar case of meningococcal meningitis serogroup C in Minnesota, which was confirmed this summer. It also offers vaccination guidance for physicians who care for patients who may be at high risk for the disease.

Eight months after undergoing orthotopic heart transplantation, a patient had hypotension and biventricular heart failure. Endomyocardial biopsy specimens showed a modest cellular infiltrate, predominantly of plasma cells, and progressive myocyte injury, suggesting a humoral rejection process. The patient was treated with Minnesota antilymphoblast globulin and aggressively with plasmapheresis, resulting in evidence of myocyte repair, improved hemodynamics, and long-term survival.
