Descriptive characterization of ambulatory health states in Duchenne muscular dystrophy: Motor function trajectories and times to loss of ambulation.

We described ambulatory Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) progression, across multiple functional measures, via previously established prognostic groups for loss of ambulation (LoA) and health states. Patients closer to vs. farther from LoA had greater declines in some measures (e.g., 6-min walk distance) and less change in others (e.g., timed rise from floor velocity) due to floor effects. Patients in the late vs. early ambulatory health state were concordantly shifted towards higher LoA risk. Findings further characterize health states and prognostic factors in ambulatory DMD and highlight t

Establishment of a visual assessment platform for total antioxidant capacity of Ganoderma sichuanense based on Arg-CeO2 hydrogel nanozyme utilizing a self-programmed smartphone app and a self-designed 3D-printed device.

A multienzyme-like L-argininemodified CeO2 (Arg-CeO2) nanozyme was prepared for accurate total antioxidant capacity (TAC) determination of Ganoderma sichuanense (G. sichuanense). It exhibits oxidase-like and peroxidase-like activities catalyzing the generation of superoxide anion free radicals and hydroxyl radicals, accelerating 3, 3', 5, 5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) chromogenic reaction. Antioxidants can effectively eliminate the generated free radicals, inhibiting the TMB chromogenic reaction. Hence, TAC can be assessed by Arg-CeO2 catalyzed TMB chromogenic reaction using ascorbic acid (AA)

Physical activity is low before and during hospitalisation: A secondary observational study in older Australian general medical patients.

OBJECTIVES: To quantify physical activity in patients prior to and during an acute general medical hospital admission and explore relationships between mobility, pre- and in-hospital physical activity. METHODS: This was a prospective, single-site secondary observational study conducted on general medical wards at a tertiary hospital. Prehospital physical activity was measured via the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE; scored 0-400); in-hospital physical activity was measured via accelerometry (time at metabolic equivalents [METs] > 1.5), and mobility was measured via the de Morton

Implementation of an Interprofessional Mobility Program in a Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit.

BACKGROUND: Emerging research suggests the need for implementation of mobility protocols and consistent evaluation of the impact on patient outcomes. Standardized mobility guidelines may be a solution for promoting nurse-driven mobility efforts and influencing a shift in the culture of mobility among nursing teams. In a 36-bed neurosurgical intensive care unit, 2 key areas of opportunity were identified related to patient mobility: strengthening of frontline nursing engagement in mobility and accuracy of documented early and safe mobilization. METHODS: Using a plan-do-study-act performance imp

Weight Loss through Lifestyle Intervention Improves Mobility in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The high prevalence of overweight or obesity in older adults is a public health concern because obesity affects health, including the risk of mobility disability. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The Mobility and Vitality Lifestyle Program, delivered by community health workers (CHWs), enrolled 303 community-dwelling adults to assess the impact of a 32-session behavioral weight management intervention. Participants completed the program at 26 sites led by 22 CHWs. Participation was limited to people aged 60-75 who had a body mass index (BMI) of 27-45 kg/m2. The primary

Right-Sided Mechanical Circulatory Support - A Hemodynamic Perspective.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Right ventricular (RV) failure is increasingly recognized as a major cause of morbidity and mortality. When RV failure is refractory to medical therapy, escalation to right-sided mechanical circulatory support (MCS) should be considered. In this review, we begin by recapitulating the hemodynamics of RV failure, then we delve into current and future right-sided MCS devices and describe their hemodynamic profiles. RECENT FINDINGS: The field of temporary right-sided MCS continues to expand, with evolving strategies and new devices actively under development. All right-sided MC

Three weeks of rehabilitation improves walking capacity but not daily physical activity in patients with multiple sclerosis with moderate to severe walking disability.

BACKGROUND: Patients with multiple sclerosis have low levels of physical activity. This is of concern because low activity levels are related to cardiovascular disease, poor walking ability, and reduced quality of life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of rehabilitation on daily physical activity and walking capacity in patients with multiple sclerosis who have moderate to severe walking disability. METHODS: This exploratory, observational study of 24 patients with multiple sclerosis examined daily physical activity, walking capacity and fatigue before and after 3 weeks of inp
