Violence against women: theoretical reflections.

Violence appears in different forms and circumstances and involves distinct kinds of violent acts against children, women, elderly and other defenseless persons. This serious problem, which degrades women's integrity, is denoted by terms like domestic violence, gender violence and violence against women. Gender violence can appear as physical, psychological, sexual, economic violence, as well as violence at work. Violence against women committed by their intimate partners can be analyzed through the Ecological Model, which explains the close relation between individuals and their environment.

Early abuse experiences and subsequent gender differences in couple adjustment.

The main purpose of the current study was to evaluate the relationship between early abusive experiences (sexual abuse, parental violence, and witnessing parental violence) and subsequent couple adjustment with a theoretical model that incorporates attachment and psychological distress as mediator variables. We specifically examined the variability in long-term psychosocial characteristics of child abuse survivors across women and men. A representative sample of French-Canadian couples composed of 632 men and women completed measures of child abuse, attachment, psychological distress, and dyad

Machine learning versus traditional regression models for predicting diabetic retinopathy screening adherence among community-dwelling older adults with diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of preventable vision loss among patients with diabetes, yet screening adherence remains suboptimal. Existing studies have mainly focused on clinical or sociodemographic determinants, with limited evidence integrating psychological mechanisms. The application of Protection Motivation Theory (PMT)-based constructs combined with machine learning for predicting DR screening adherence remains underexplored in community populations. OBJECTIVE: This study compared machine learning models (decision tree and random forest) with traditional logi

Emotion regulation processes as mediators of the impact of past life events on older adults' psychological distress.

OBJECTIVE: Although it is known that certain emotion regulation processes produce a buffering effect on the relationship between life events and well-being, this issue has been poorly studied in the elderly population. Thus, the aim of the present study is to test and confirm a comprehensive model of the impact that past life events have on older adults' psychological distress, exploring the possible mediating roles of emotion regulation processes. These include rumination, experiential avoidance, and personal growth. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 387 people over 60 years old residi

Prognostic value of psychological testing in patients undergoing spinal cord stimulation: a prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Associations between psychological and physical states are understood to exist, and the development of standardized psychological tests has allowed quantitative evaluation of this relationship. We tested whether associations exist between psychological test instruments and patients selected for therapeutic trials of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) for chronic, intractable pain. METHODS: Fifty-eight patients selected for SCS were tested prospectively with a battery of standardized psychological tests: Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory with Wiggins content scales, Symptom Che

Long-Term Psychological Distress Among Surrogate Decision Makers for Mexican American and Non-Hispanic White Patients With Severe Stroke.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: During acute hospitalizations, physicians often focus on the stroke patient and not family who may be traumatized by this sudden change to their loved one. We investigated long-term psychological distress among family surrogate decision makers for Mexican American (MA) and non-Hispanic White (NHW) severe stroke patients. Previous work in other diseases suggested worse psychological outcomes in MA than NHW caregivers. METHODS: This was a population-based, prospective cohort study in Nueces County, TX. Stroke patient participants and their surrogate decision makers we

Multisystem predictors of dynamic gait stability across fall risk in older adults.

Gait stability arises from interactions between physiological, cognitive, and psychological systems, yet these domains are often assessed in isolation. This study examined multisystem predictors of anteroposterior margin of stability during walking (MoSAP) in community-dwelling older adults. Of 340 participants, 143 were retained after data quality screening (105 females; age: 70.8 ± 7.8 years). Participants completed the Physiological Profile Assessment (PPA), cognitive testing using Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), fear-of-falling evaluations using Modified Falls Efficacy Scale (MFES) a

Counterfactual processing of economic action-outcome alternatives in obsessive-compulsive disorder: further evidence of impaired goal-directed behavior.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disorder of automatic, uncontrollable behaviors and obsessive rumination. There is evidence that OCD patients have difficulties performing goal-directed actions, instead exhibiting repetitive stimulus-response habit behaviors. This might result from the excessive formation of stimulus-response habit associations or from an impairment in the ability to use outcome value to guide behavior. We investigated the latter by examining counterfactual decision making, which is the ability to use comparisons of prospective action-outcome scenarios to g

Economic valuation of psychological processes: Examining healthcare decision-making in chronic disease management.

This paper examines how economic valuation - an economic process - is influenced by individual differences in goals - a psychological process. Specifically, we demonstrate how to estimate economic value in the context of health behaviors by incorporating psychological variations in goal priorities. The study is motivated by the need to better understand how healthcare interventions shape individual behaviors, particularly in the management of chronic conditions such as Cystic Fibrosis (CF). The primary contribution of this paper is conceptual, introducing a model that integrates economic and p

Task conflict and proactive control: A computational theory of the Stroop task.

The Stroop task is a central experimental paradigm used to probe cognitive control by measuring the ability of participants to selectively attend to task-relevant information and inhibit automatic task-irrelevant responses. Research has revealed variability in both experimental manipulations and individual differences. Here, we focus on a particular source of Stroop variability, the reverse-facilitation (RF; faster responses to nonword neutral stimuli than to congruent stimuli), which has recently been suggested as a signature of task conflict. We first review the literature that shows RF vari

Understanding active school travel through the Behavioural Ecological Model.

Active school travel (AST) is an important source of physical activity for children and a conceptual understanding of AST is necessary to inform promotion efforts. The aim of this article is to provide a conceptual analysis of AST. All currently identified AST formulations include intra-individual variables which are often recommended as intervention targets. However, existing literature lacks clarity on precisely how these intra-individual variables might shape specific AST interventions. Moreover, evaluative studies of AST interventions typically fail to specify an underpinning theory or mod

When feeling skillful impairs coordination in a lottery selection task.

Choosing a major field of study to secure a good job after graduation is a tacit coordination problem that requires considering others' choices. We examine how feeling skillful, either induced (Experiment 1) or measured (Experiment 2), affects coordination in this type of task. In both experiments participants chose between two lotteries, one offering a larger prize than the other. Participants' entry into the chosen lottery was either related or unrelated to their skill, with the final prize allocated randomly to one of the entrants in each lottery. Importantly, across conditions skill was ir

Modelling normal and impaired letter recognition: implications for understanding pure alexic reading.

Letter recognition is the foundation of the human reading system. Despite this, it tends to receive little attention in computational modelling of single word reading. Here we present a model that can be trained to recognise letters in various spatial transformations. When presented with degraded stimuli the model makes letter confusion errors that correlate with human confusability data. Analyses of the internal representations of the model suggest that a small set of learned visual feature detectors support the recognition of both upper case and lower case letters in various fonts and transf

Common psychotic symptoms can be explained by the theory of ecological perception.

The symptoms of psychiatric illness are diverse, as are the causes of the conditions that cause them. Yet, regardless of the heterogeneity of cause and presentation, a great deal of symptoms can be explained by the failure of a single perceptual function--the reprocessing of ecological perception. It is a central tenet of the ecological theory of perception that we perceive opportunities to act. It has also been found that perception automatically causes actions and thoughts to occur unless this primary action pathway is inhibited. Inhibition allows perceptions to be reprocessed into more appr

Psychoanalysis and schizophrenia: a cautionary tale.

The history of psychoanalysis and schizophrenia is used as an example of psychoanalytic theories of etiology that have not stood the test of time. Those theories pointed to three main factors: very serious inadequacies in the caretaking person; the presence of these inadequacies so early, during the preverbal period, that they led to the impairment of early object relations, the development of psychic structure, and basic ego functions; and the absence of underlying biological abnormalities. Today, many analysts are still reluctant to acknowledge biological etiological factors for other psychi

From defense to reconstruction: The hostility-meaning dual-path model of how observing others' adversity influences distress disclosure.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the mechanism by which observing peers' adverse experiences influences distress disclosure of negative information through two progressive studies. METHODS: Study 1constructed a moderated mediation model to analyze the relationships among stress, self-esteem, hostility, and disclosure. Study 2 employed a situational experiment to test a chain mediation model which supplemented by multi-group analysis. RESULTS: Study 1 showed that stress directly inhibited disclosure and indirectly inhibited it via reduced self-esteem, with hostility moderating the stress-self-e

Metacognition in motor learning.

Research on judgments of verbal learning has demonstrated that participants' judgments are unreliable and often overconfident. The authors studied judgments of perceptual-motor learning. Participants learned 3 keystroke patterns on the number pad of a computer, each requiring that a different sequence of keys be struck in a different total movement time. Practice trials on each pattern were either blocked or randomly interleaved with trials on the other patterns, and each participant was asked, periodically, to predict his or her performance on a 24-hr test. Consistent with earlier findings, b

Effects of spiritual resilience on psychological distress and health-related quality of life in Chinese people with Parkinson's disease.

PURPOSE: Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is an increasingly critical outcome of chronic illness care. However, its disease-independent attributes, particularly its spiritual resilient indicators, for people with Parkinson's disease (PD) have not been explicitly examined. This study aimed to (i) assess the associations between psychological distress, spiritual resilience and HRQOL, and (ii) examine the mediating effects of spiritual resilience on psychological distress and HRQOL amongst individuals with PD. METHODS: This is a secondary data analysis of the baseline data of a clinical tr

Risk and Protective Factors for Psychological Distress in Families Following a Diagnosis of Cleft Lip and/or Palate.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the potential psychological impact of a diagnosis of cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) on parents, few large-scale studies currently exist. Utilizing data extracted from The Cleft Collective Birth Cohort Study, the current study aimed to examine the psychological impact of the diagnosis on parent and family functioning and to identify risk and/or protective factors contributing to parental adjustment in order to inform future psychological intervention. METHODS: Parent-reported questionnaire data were extracted for 1163 parents (644 mothers and 519 fathers). Outcome measures
