Sampling weighting strategies in causal mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Causal mediation analysis plays a crucial role in examining causal effects and causal mechanisms. Yet, limited work has taken into consideration the use of sampling weights in causal mediation analysis. In this study, we compared different strategies of incorporating sampling weights into causal mediation analysis. METHODS: We conducted a simulation study to assess 4 different sampling weighting strategies-1) not using sampling weights, 2) incorporating sampling weights into mediation "cross-world" weights, 3) using sampling weights when estimating the outcome model, and 4) using

Semiparametric probit regression model with misclassified current status data.

Current status data arise when each subject under study is examined only once at an observation time, and one only knows the failure status of the event of interest at the observation time rather than the exact failure time. Moreover, the obtained failure status is frequently subject to misclassification due to imperfect tests, yielding misclassified current status data. This article conducts regression analysis of such data with the semiparametric probit model, which serves as an important alternative to existing semiparametric models and has recently received considerable attention in failur

Predicting pregnancy outcomes using longitudinal information: a penalized splines mixed-effects model approach.

We propose a semiparametric nonlinear mixed-effects model (SNMM) using penalized splines to classify longitudinal data and improve the prediction of a binary outcome. The work is motivated by a study in which different hormone levels were measured during the early stages of pregnancy, and the challenge is using this information to predict normal versus abnormal pregnancy outcomes. The aim of this paper is to compare models and estimation strategies on the basis of alternative formulations of SNMMs depending on the characteristics of the data set under consideration. For our motivating example,

Investigating the structure of the WJ-III Cognitive at school age.

During its development, the Woodcock-Johnson, Third Edition Cognitive (WJ-III Cognitive; McGrew & Woodcock, 2001) was never subjected to structural analysis using exploratory and higher order factor analyses. Instead, confirmatory factor analyses were conducted on separate sets of WJ-III correlation matrices, yielding a seven-factor model across all age ranges. To see whether the structure holds for the WJ-III Cognitive, currently recognized best practice exploratory factor analysis (EFA) procedures were applied to two school-aged correlation matrices (ages 9-13; 14-19) from the normative samp

Variable selection strategies in survival models with multiple imputations.

In this paper, the variable selection strategies (criteria) are thoroughly discussed and their use in various survival models is investigated. The asymptotic efficiency property, in the sense of Shibata Ann Stat 8: 147-164, 1980, of a class of variable selection strategies which includes the AIC and all criteria equivalent to it, is established for a general class of survival models, such as parametric frailty or transformation models and accelerated failure time models, under minimum conditions. Furthermore, a multiple imputations method is proposed which is found to successfully handle censo

Accident prediction model for railway-highway interfaces.

Considerable past research has explored relationships between vehicle accidents and geometric design and operation of road sections, but relatively little research has examined factors that contribute to accidents at railway-highway crossings. Between 1998 and 2002 in Korea, about 95% of railway accidents occurred at highway-rail grade crossings, resulting in 402 accidents, of which about 20% resulted in fatalities. These statistics suggest that efforts to reduce crashes at these locations may significantly reduce crash costs. The objective of this paper is to examine factors associated with r

Intraclass correlation for two-by-two tables under three sampling designs.

Several sampling designs for assessing agreement between two binary classifications on each of n subjects lead to data arrayed in a four-fold table. Following Kraemer's (1979, Psychometrika 44, 461-472) approach, population models are described for binary data analogous to quantitative data models for a one-way random design, a two-way mixed design, and a two-way random design. For each of these models, parameters representing intraclass correlation are defined, and two estimators are proposed, one from constructing ANOVA-type tables for binary data, and one by the method of maximum likelihood

Coexposure confounding and amplification of bias-an exploration with practical interpretation and perspectives.

Epidemiologists increasingly estimate associations between mixtures of correlated coexposures and health outcomes. We propose an exploratory approach to help differentiate coexposure confounding from coexposure amplification of bias (CAB) for studies considering correlated coexposures using a case example and simulations based on observed relationships. Our example uses associations observed in published studies between co-occurring per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) biomarkers and tetanus antibody concentrations but could apply to any context where statistical modeling is performed wit

Robust Alpha Spending for Unstable Data.

Sequential hypothesis testing has been used in randomized clinical trials and in monitoring adverse events after vaccination. Typically, the presumption is that all data that have been previously used in the sequential analysis remain the same, and only new data are added. We call this the "anchoring" assumption. In prelicensing randomized trials, enrollment goals are set based on these sequential hypothesis tests so that a trial may stop if a drug proves either too hazardous or, conversely, so beneficial that it would be unethical to deny the treatment to others. However, in monitoring advers

Sensitivity analysis for contamination in egocentric-network randomized trials with interference.

Egocentric-network randomized trials (ENRTs) are increasingly used to estimate causal effects under interference when measuring complete sociocentric network data is infeasible. ENRTs rely on egocentric network sampling, where a set of egos is first sampled, and each ego recruits a subset of its neighbors as alters. Treatments are then randomized across egos. While the observed ego-networks are disjoint by design, the underlying population network may contain edges connecting them, leading to contamination. Under a design-based framework, we show that the Horvitz-Thompson estimators of direct

Transfer Learning for Error-Contaminated Poisson Regression Models.

Poisson regression model has been a popular approach to characterize the count response and the covariates. With the rapid development of data collections, the additional source information can be easily recorded. To efficiently use the source data to improve the estimation under the original data, the transfer learning method is considered a strategy. However, challenging issues from the given datasets include measurement error and high-dimensionality in variables, which are not well explored in the context of transfer learning. In this paper, we propose a novel strategy to handle error-prone

A monotone single index model for spatially referenced multistate current status data.

Assessment of multistate disease progression is commonplace in biomedical research, such as in periodontal disease (PD). However, the presence of multistate current status endpoints, where only a single snapshot of each subject's progression through disease states is available at a random inspection time after a known starting state, complicates the inferential framework. In addition, these endpoints can be clustered, and spatially associated, where a group of proximally located teeth (within subjects) may experience similar PD status, compared to those distally located. Generalized nonparametric temporal modeling of recurrent events with application to a malaria vaccine trial.

Motivated by a malaria vaccine efficacy trial, this paper investigates generalized nonparametric temporal models of intensity processes with multiple time scales. Through the choice of link functions, the proposed models encompass a wide range of models such as the multiplicative temporal intensity model and the additive temporal intensity model. A maximum likelihood estimation procedure is developed to estimate the effects of two time-scales via the local linear smoothing with double kernels. Computational algorithms are developed to facilitate applications of the proposed method. An adaptive

Statistical methods for clinical trials interrupted by the severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic: A review.

Cancellation or delay of non-essential medical interventions, limitation of face-to-face assessments or outpatient attendance due to lockdown restrictions, illness or fear of hospital or healthcare centre visits, and halting of research to allow diversion of healthcare resources to focus on the pandemic led to the interruption of many clinical trials during the severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic. Appropriate analysis approaches are now required for these interrupted trials. In trials with long follow-up and longitudinal outcomes, data may be available on earl

Tell me what you want, what you really really want: Estimands in observational pharmacoepidemiologic comparative effectiveness and safety studies.

PURPOSE: Ideally, the objectives of a pharmacoepidemiologic comparative effectiveness or safety study should dictate its design and data analysis. This paper discusses how defining an estimand is instrumental to this process. METHODS: We applied the ICH-E9 (Statistical Principles for Clinical Trials) R1 addendum on estimands - which originally focused on randomized trials - to three examples of observational pharmacoepidemiologic comparative effectiveness and safety studies. Five key elements specify the estimand: the population, contrasted treatments, endpoint, intercurrent events, and popul

A note on intrinsic conditional autoregressive models for disconnected graphs.

In this note we discuss (Gaussian) intrinsic conditional autoregressive (CAR) models for disconnected graphs, with the aim of providing practical guidelines for how these models should be defined, scaled and implemented. We show how these suggestions can be implemented in two examples, on disease mapping.

Beta-binomial model for meta-analysis of odds ratios.

In meta-analysis of odds ratios (ORs), heterogeneity between the studies is usually modelled via the additive random effects model (REM). An alternative, multiplicative REM for ORs uses overdispersion. The multiplicative factor in this overdispersion model (ODM) can be interpreted as an intra-class correlation (ICC) parameter. This model naturally arises when the probabilities of an event in one or both arms of a comparative study are themselves beta-distributed, resulting in beta-binomial distributions. We propose two new estimators of the ICC for meta-analysis in this setting. One is based o

Fractional polynomial adjustment for time-varying covariates in a self-controlled case series analysis.

The self-controlled case series method is a statistical approach to investigating associations between acute outcomes and transient exposures. The method uses cases only and compares time at risk after the transient exposure with time at risk outside the exposure period within an individual, using conditional Poisson regression. The risk of outcome and exposure often varies over time, for example, with age, and it is important to allow for such time dependence within the analysis. The standard approach for modelling time-varying covariates is to split observation periods into blocks according

Comparative study of four time series methods in forecasting typhoid fever incidence in China.

Accurate incidence forecasting of infectious disease is critical for early prevention and for better government strategic planning. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of different forecasting methods based on the monthly incidence of typhoid fever. The seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model and three different models inspired by neural networks, namely, back propagation neural networks (BPNN), radial basis function neural networks (RBFNN), and Elman recurrent neural networks (ERNN) were compared. The differences as well as the advantages and disadvantages

A new method for the comparison of survival distributions.

The assessment of overall homogeneity of time-to-event curves is a key element in survival analysis in biomedical research. The currently commonly used testing methods, e.g. log-rank test, Wilcoxon test, and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, may have a significant loss of statistical testing power under certain circumstances. In this paper we propose a new testing method that is robust for the comparison of the overall homogeneity of survival curves based on the absolute difference of the area under the survival curves using normal approximation by Greenwood's formula. Monte Carlo simulations are condu
