Validating the neurite exchange imaging (NEXI) model of gray matter using Monte Carlo simulations in numerical substrates.

NEXI is a gray matter (GM) microstructural model designed to probe brain tissue microstructure in vivo using diffusion MRI. NEXI describes GM as two exchanging Gaussian compartments-neurites, modeled as randomly oriented, infinitely long sticks, and the extracellular space-allowing the estimation of biophysically interpretable parameters related to neurite microstructure and intercompartmental exchange. While modeling cell processes as sticks and each compartment as Gaussian are common assumptions for brain biophysical models of diffusion, neurite structural irregularities and the presence of

A non-proportional hazards cure model with an application to gastric cancer data analysis.

In many practical situations, some subjects may never experience the event of interest in their lifetime. These subjects are referred to as the cured or non-susceptible subjects. In the context of chronic disease treatment, this is referred to as a cure fraction. In this work, we extend the generalized time-dependent logistic (GTDL) model proposed by MacKenzie (1996) to a flexible family of models which accommodates not only non-proportional hazards, but also long-term survivors. Inferential methods are then developed for the proposed model and a Monte Carlo simulation study is also carried ou

Dosimetry evaluation of an MRI guided small animal irradiator.

Objective.Magnetic Resonance guided Radiation Therapy (MRgRT) integrates magnetic resonance imaging with radiation delivery, providing superior soft-tissue contrast and real-time treatment guidance. For preclinical MRgRT irradiators, a critical concern is whether the ambient magnetic fields compromise the radiation dose distribution. This study aims to investigate the influence of magnetic fields on X-ray tube electron trajectories and dosimetric outcomes.Approach.The system integrates a 0.5 T MRI scanner and a 225 kVp X-ray tube. The local magnetic field distribution was characterized via fin

A probabilistic assessment of dietary heavy metal exposure and its temporal trends in Chongqing China from 2012 to 2022.

Chongqing, a traditional industrial base and agricultural hub in inland Southwest China, exhibits dietary patterns representative of this rapidly developing region. This study employed a probabilistic risk assessment (Monte Carlo simulation) to evaluate the impact of early 21st-century environmental policies on population health from 2012 to 2022. Results revealed significant reductions in heavy metal (HM) concentrations in commercially available foods during 2018-2022 compared to 2012-2014. The mean concentrations of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and mercury (Hg) declined to 0.016-0.

Advancing dosimetry in cone-beam computed tomography: methodologies and key findings.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is widely used in radiology and radiotherapy, yet accurate dose assessment remains challenging due to wide X-ray beams, nonstandardized dosimetry protocols, and limited beam-collimation options. This study investigated a practical method for obtaining reference Computed Tomography Dose Index (CTDI) measurements on a CBCT system by introducing an external tungsten slit to generate a narrow beam compatible with the adopted dosimetry formalisms. Computed tomography air-kerma index measurements were performed using a 10-cm pencil ionization chamber, and dose-ar

Forecasting seasonal influenza epidemics with physics-informed neural networks.

Accurate epidemic forecasting is critical for informing public health decisions and timely interventions. While physics-informed neural networks have shown promise in various scientific domains, their potential application to real-time epidemic forecasting remains underexplored. Here, we present SIR-INN, a hybrid forecasting framework that integrates the mechanistic structure of the classical Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered (SIR) model into a neural network architecture. Trained once on synthetic epidemic scenarios, the model is able to generalize across epidemic conditions without retraining

Phthalate acid esters in the hospital environments: occurrence, multimedia partitioning simulation, and zonal health risk assessment.

Hospital environments, rich in medical devices and plastic products containing phthalate acid esters (PAEs), may release these compounds into indoor air via migration and volatilization, posing potential health risk. This study systematically investigates the contamination characteristics of PAEs in hospital settings and assesses their associated human health risks. We quantified the concentrations of PAEs in indoor dust samples collected from hospitals in Changchun, China. The concentrations of ∑PAEs ranged from 65.1 to 88,824 μg/g (mean: 5506 μg/g, median: 2520 μg/g). Spatial analysis showed

Limitations of blood supply and walking blood bank implementation in Forward Resuscitative Surgical Detachments during large-scale combat operations: A Monte Carlo simulation model.

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhage remains the leading cause of preventable battlefield mortality. Although early whole blood resuscitation improved outcomes during the Global War on Terror, this relied on permissive operational conditions unlikely to persist in future large-scale combat operations (LSCO). Projected LSCO casualty volumes may rapidly overwhelm current Role 2 Forward Resuscitative Surgical Detachments (FRSDs), and walking blood banks (WBB) may provide only minimal augmentation. This study evaluates blood supply resilience for a Role 2 FRSD across LSCO casualty scenarios and quantifies the i

Retrospective patient-specific intravascular brachytherapy dosimetry using optical coherence tomography imaging.

PURPOSE: Drug-eluting stents fail in up to 20% of patients. In failed cases, intravascular brachytherapy (IVBT) is administered with β-emitting 90Sr90Y through a guidewire. Current clinical dosimetry is water-based, neglecting attenuation from patient-specific materials such as plaques, stents, and the off-centered guidewire, leading to a discrepancy between prescribed and delivered dose. This study retrospectively performed patient-specific IVBT dose calculations using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to quantify uncertainties in clinical dosimetry. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Dose calculations

Unveiling non-linear thresholds of life-cycle carbon emissions in small reservoirs: an integrated stochastic EI-LCA and machine learning framework.

Small reservoirs are critical for rural water security, yet their life-cycle carbon emissions remain poorly quantified due to extreme data scarcity and non-linear emission dynamics. Conventional Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) often rely on static assumptions, failing to capture complex multi-variable interactions. To overcome this, we propose an integrated stochastic framework coupling Environmentally Extended Input-Output LCA (EI-LCA) with Monte Carlo simulations, Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP). Applied to the Huxingdi Reservoir in China, the frame

Lead Borate Glass Series for Radiation Shielding Applications: The Influence of CaO, BaO and ZnO on Optical, Mechanical, and Radiation Shielding Properties.

This work examines the BaO, ZnO and CaO metal oxides' role in lead borate glasses' mechanical, optical and radiation shielding performance. Using the melting-quenching method at 1100°C, the lead borate glass system was fabricated. According to the Makishima-Makinze model, the most elevated mechanical properties were for the glass samples with CaO additives, including elastic moduli, hardness and bond strength. On the other hand, the glass samples with BaO additives achieved the lowest mechanical properties, while the ZnO compound glasses had intermediate glass former and modifier properties. F

Development and validation of a TOPAS Monte Carlo model for a 0.5 T bi-planar Linac-MR.

BACKGROUND: MR-guided radiotherapy enables real-time imaging and adaptive treatment but may introduce magnetic field effects that alter dose deposition. Accurate dose calculation in such settings requires detailed Monte Carlo (MC) modeling. PURPOSE: To develop and validate a detailed MC model of the 0.5 T bi-planar Linac-MR with an integrated, custom-designed multileaf collimator (MLC) module in TOPAS. METHODS: A MC Model of the 0.5 T bi-planar Linac-MR with a 6 MV FFF beam, commercialized as the Aurora-RT (MagnetTx Oncology Solutions, Canada), is developed in TOPAS. A custom 3D magnetic fie

Integrating measurement and simulation for evaluation of patient-specific whole-body dosimetry in clinical BNCT.

BACKGROUND: Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a treatment modality that utilises high intensity neutron beam in combination with a boron drug to target cancer cells at the cellular level. Despite decades of research in this field, there are very few reports on out-of-field patient dose of BNCT. PURPOSE: To quantify patient whole-body out-of-field dose during clinical BNCT for recurrent head-and-neck cancer using an integrated measurement-simulation workflow. METHODS: The data of 271 patients that received BNCT for recurrent head and neck were analyzed for this study.First, the neutron

Monte Carlo modeling of the formation and organization of ion channel clustering.

The spatial organization of ion channels on cell membranes critically influences many key physiological processes, such as cardiac and neuronal excitability and cellular signaling, yet the mechanisms governing channel clustering remain poorly understood. In this study, we present a stochastic computational framework that models the dynamic organization of ion channels through Monte Carlo simulations incorporating membrane insertion, removal, channel-channel interactions, and diffusion processes. Our model reveals several fundamental principles of membrane domain formation. In single-channel sy

Organ Dosimetry in Radionuclide Therapy: Biokinetics of 131 I and Dose with a Healthy Thyroid and after Thyroidectomy Using MCNP6.

An accurate internal dosimetry is important in 131 I radionuclide therapy. In patients who have undergone a thyroidectomy, organs other than the thyroid absorb higher doses as the radionuclide is transported through the body because most of the thyroid gland is removed, and it cannot retain the 131 I. The primary objective of this study is to compare the absorbed doses in at-risk organs due to intake of 131 I after thyroidectomy vs. a healthy thyroid scenario. The biokinetic model of internal dosimetry for healthy thyroid as proposed by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (

Autonomous Uncertainty Quantification for Computational Point-of-Care Sensors.

Computational point-of-care (POC) sensors enable rapid, low-cost, and accessible diagnostics in emergency, remote, and resource-limited areas that lack access to centralized medical facilities. These systems can use neural network-based algorithms to accurately infer diagnoses from signals generated by rapid diagnostic tests or sensors. However, neural network-based diagnostic models are subject to hallucinations and can produce erroneous predictions, posing a risk of misdiagnosis and inaccurate clinical decisions. To address this challenge, here we present an autonomous uncertainty quantifica

Biology-informed reinterpretation of lattice radiotherapy using non-local bystander signalling and anatomy-aware vascular sink modelling.

Objective.Lattice radiotherapy is usually evaluated using physical dose metrics such as target coverage, peak-to-valley dose ratio (PVDR), and organ-at-risk (OAR) dose, but these metrics do not explicitly represent non-local biological signalling. This study developed a hypothesis-generating computational framework to test whether synthetic head-and-neck lattice dose patterns retain the same interpretation after non-local signalling and anatomy-aware vascular uptake are included.Approach.A reaction-diffusion model propagated ROS-like and cytokine-like signals from TOPAS-derived dose distributi

Modelling radiation adaptive response in space radiation risk assessment using Monte Carlo simulation.

Uncertainty surrounding the biological effects of chronic low-dose radiation remains an important challenge in radiation risk assessment, particularly for long-duration space missions. Although adaptive response has been proposed as a potential modifier of radiation-induced cancer risk, its impact on mission-level risk predictions has not been quantitatively evaluated. We developed an exploratory Monte Carlo framework that extends a conventional linear no-threshold-based cancer risk model by incorporating an adaptive response factor (RAF) parameterised by a maximum protection fraction (), a ha
