[TORCH infections in mothers as a cause of neonatal morbidity].

When possible, diseases by expectant mothers and newborns, like long-term disabilities also, should be prevented by establishing early diagn … anisms to the various tissues. These infections are responsible for significant congenital neonatal morbidity as for as compromises a child's quality of life and infertility and sterility. One group of microbial agents--generally known as TORCH infections can cause remarkably similar manifestations, and is uncommon to test all when a prenatal infection is s …

Retained placenta: a cause of reproductive morbidity in Nigeria.

This study analysed the reproductive morbidity associated with 91 cases of retained placenta at the Obafemi Awolowo University Hospital in Nigeria. The incidence of retained placenta in the hospital was 1.4% of all deliveries. Over 42% of the patients were admitted in haemorrhagic shock; 56.5% were anaemic, 10.6% severely; 17% had puerperal sepsis while 67% of the women received blood transfusions. There was one maternal death (1%). Unbooked patients (74%) constituted the largest proportion of cases while inappropriate management of the third stage of labour featured in many of the patients. R…

Clinical morbidity and sequelae of treatment with complete dentures.

Wearing complete dentures may have adverse effects on the health of both the oral and the denture-supporting tissues. This article is a review of selected literature on the sequelae of treatment with complete dentures in the specific areas of residual ridge resorption, mucosal reactions, burning mouth syndrome, temporomandibular disorders, and patient satisfaction. Recent literature found with a Medline search from 1952 to 1996 is included in this review. Residual ridge resorption is an inevitable consequence of tooth loss and denture wearing, with no dominant causative factor having been foun

Association of tachycardia with morbidity and mortality: pathophysiological considerations.

An increased rate of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality has been documented in subjects with tachycardia. Hypertensive subjects with tachycardia often also exhibit overweight, higher haematocrit, plasma insulin, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels whereas high density lipoprotein (HDL) is decreased. Sympathetic overactivity seems to be responsible both for the increase in heart rate and blood pressure (BP), and for metabolic abnormalities. Excessive stimulation of beta-adrenergic receptors in the skeletal muscles can cause insulin resistance and chronic beta-adrenergic stimulation which l

Morbidity in the preterm infant with mature lung indices.

This study was designed to evaluate neonatal morbidity and mortality following preterm delivery in the setting of mature amniotic fluid pulmonary studies. We performed a retrospective analysis of all pregnancies resulting in preterm deliveries (< 37 weeks) from 1/1/88 to 5/31/92 in which there was a "mature" phospholipid profile, defined as positive phosphatidylglycerol (PG) or lecithin/sphyngomyelin (L/S) ratio > or = 2 determined within 1 week of delivery. Excluded were multiple gestations, diabetic pregnancies, and fetal or neonatal abnormalities involving the cardiovascular, renal, or pulm…

Long-term catheterization of the bladder: prevalence and morbidity.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence and morbidity of long-term catheterization (LTC) of the urinary bladder. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A postal survey was conducted over two successive years from February 1989 to determine the incidence of LTC in three Bristol Health Districts with a total population of 827,595. During the first year the number of patients requiring emergency treatment for complications of LTC was also monitored over a 6-month period. In the second year, 54 patients were selected from the first survey and each was visited by one investigator every 2 weeks for 12 weeks to obtain…

Undernutrition, vitamin A deficiency and ARI morbidity in underfives.

In a longitudinal study of 200 randomly selected underfives were followed fortnightly for a period of one calendar year (January to December 91) to ascertain the influence of undernutrition and vitamin A deficiency on the ARI incidence. The study revealed that on an average a child suffered from 5.9 episodes of ARI in one year period. Children who were undernourished or showed signs of vitamin A deficiency had significantly greater risk of AIR attacks.

Immunity and morbidity in infection due to Schistosoma haematobium.

It has been suggested that immunologic factors, rather than transmission factors, may play a particularly important role in the regulation o … lass blocking antibodies have also been described. The relationship between infection intensity and morbidity may not be as simple as has hitherto been assumed, especially since the methods used to generate data on the prevalence and intensity of infection have serious limitations that may only be overcome with improved or alternative sampling techniques.

[Neuropathic beriberi as a complication of surgery of morbid obesity].

We describe a women of 22 years of age who had had a vertical gastroplasty (as treatment for morbid obesity). She was admitted to hospital with a 4 week history of nausea and vomiting of food. Treatment with intravenous dextrose, without vitamin supplements was started. One week later she complained of diplopia, paresthesia and weakness of the limbs. All investigations proved to be normal. A deficiency state was suspected, probably Wernicke's encephalopathy, although no alterations were seen in her mental state. We started treatment with high doses of parenteral thiamine, other vitamins and a

Morbidity and injury recurrence in victims of firearm injuries.

Civilian violence has become an increasing problem in the industrial world. Gunshot wounds, fatal or non-fatal, are often considered as acute trauma episodes. However, our previous study, based on 820 firearm injuries, showed that this group of patients was characterized by a high mortality rate and a pronounced involvement in criminality when compared to a control group. The aim of this study was to determine the general morbidity in the same group of firearm victims. Our hypotheses were that these patients consume a considerable amount of hospital care due to recurring trauma episodes and th…

Can the morbidity of esophagectomy be reduced by the thoracoscopic approach?

Esophagectomies have a high morbidity rate, mainly related to pulmonary complications. The aim of this work was to assess whether the thoracoscopic approach could reduce this morbidity. We have made a prospective study of the results of 29 attempts of esophagectomy using a right thoracoscopic approach. There were 20 males and 9 females having an average age of 47. The indication was a squamous cell carcinoma in 22 patients, an adenocarcinoma in 1 patient, a melanoma in 1 patient, and a caustic stenosis in 5. The whole esophagus was mobilized thoracoscopically and the esophagectomy was complete…

[Morbidity and mortality in sleep apnea and nocturnal bradyarrhythmia].

The as yet unanswered question, whether patients with sleep apnoea and apnoea-associated bradyarrhythmias have a higher morbidity and mortality rate, was retrospectively investigated in 132 men with sleep apnoea (apnoea index > 10/h). Sleep-associated bradycardic arrhythmias were recorded in 71 (mean age 50.1 years; group 1). For comparison served 61 men with sleep apnoea but no bradyarrhythmias (mean age 51.4 years; group 2), matched for age and weight. There was no significant difference between the two groups as to diagnosis and initial findings on ergometry, lung function tests and blood g…

[Morbidity of radical prostatectomy for localized cancer of the prostate].

The author reports the morbidity of 173 personal radical prostatectomy operations performed by the same surgeon between 1st June 1985 and 31st December 1992. The early morbidity was negligible. The late morbidity was marked by a single case of complete incontinence (0.5%). Sexual function deteriorated in proportion to the increasing quality of operative haemostasis.

Psychological morbidity in women referred for treatment of hirsutism.

Sixty-nine pre-menopausal hirsute women were studied to determine the prevalence of psychological morbidity, and to identify factors associated with psychiatric symptoms. Measures used included: GHQ and POMS to assess psychological morbidity; self-esteem; personality (EPQ); and social adjustment, amongst other. About a third of subjects were found to be GHQ cases, one third had never discussed their hirsutism before, and two thirds avoided some social situations. Psychological morbidity was associated with poor social adjustment, higher levels of neuroticism and introversion, and avoidance of …

The coronal approach. Anatomic and technical considerations and morbidity.

The coronal flap has recently become a preferred approach for the otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon requiring access to the craniofacial skeleton and orbit. The variety of cases in which it has proven indispensable include craniofacial reconstruction, facial trauma, and tumor resection. This method of exposure has become particularly useful with increased indications for rigid internal fixation and primary bone grafting in the management of complex facial fractures. Our experience is reviewed in terms of indications for and benefits of the coronal approach, with a detailed description of
