Posture, locomotion, spatial orientation, and motion sickness as a function of space flight.

This article summarizes a variety of newly published findings obtained by the Neuroscience Laboratory, Johnson Space Center, and attempts to place this work within a historical framework of previous results on posture, locomotion, motion sickness, and perceptual responses that have been observed in conjunction with space flight. In this context, we have taken the view that correct transduction and integration of signals from all sensory systems is essential to maintaining stable vision, postural and locomotor control, and eye-hand coordination as components of spatial orientation. The plastici…

Effect of direction of head movement on motion sickness caused by Coriolis stimulation.

BACKGROUND: During constant speed rotation of the body, head rotation about an axis other than the axis of rotation of the body (i.e., Coriolis is stimulation) induces motion sickness. HYPOTHESES: The position of the body relative to the center of rotation will influence the sickness caused by Coriolis stimulation; the direction of head movement will not affect the sickness caused by Coriolis stimulation. METHOD: There were 24 seated subjects (12 male, 12 female) who made 30 degrees pitch motions of the head every 30 s while rotating about a vertical axis at 10 r.p.m. on a turntable at two s…

Altered sensorimotor control of the body as an etiological factor in space motion sickness.

Exposure to nonterrestrial force levels affects the activity of gravitoinertial force sensitive receptors of the body, both of labyrinthine … rimotor control of head and body posture along with altered vestibulomotor control are evocative of motion sickness. This observation has explanatory significance both for space motion sickness and the re-entry disturbances that occur after prolonged spaceflight.

The anti-motion sickness mechanism of ginger. A comparative study with placebo and dimenhydrinate.

A controlled, double-blind study was carried out to determine whether nystagmus response to optokinetic or vestibular stimuli might be alter … vestibular nor the oculomotor system, both of which are of decisive importance in the occurrence of motion sickness, are influenced by ginger. A CNS mechanism, which is characteristic of the conventional anti-motion sickness drugs, can thus be excluded as regards ginger root. It is more likely that any reduction of motion-sickness symptoms derives from the influe …

A comparison of two methods of training resistance to visually-induced motion sickness.

This report concerns the use of two methods of training subjects to tolerate visually-induced motion sickness (VMS). Sixteen subjects were selected on the basis of their response to a motion sickness history questionnaire and assigned to one of four groups on the basis of their ability to tolerate visually-induced motion (VM). One group received 10 sessions of confidence building and desensitization training (BT); a second group received 10 sessions of EMG and temperature biofeedback (FB); a third group received 10 sessions of BT and 10 sessions of FB (BTFB); and a fourth group received no tre…

[Use of central electroanalgesia to restore the body's functional state in motion sickness].

Central electroanalgesia (CEAN) is a technique that involves application of pulsating current to the central nervous system in order to enhance its tonicity recover autonomic equilibrium and to reduce parasympathetic cardiovascular reactions. In two experimental runs in which 9 volunteers participated the efficacy of CEAN in preventing motion sickness symptoms produced by Markaryan's test was studied. After two rotations repeated with a one-hour interval vestibular reactions persisted for 7-10 hours. CEAN had a positive effect: after a one-hour CEAN session applied between two rotations the to…

Sensory conflict theory of space motion sickness: an anatomical location for the neuroconflict.

Most investigators understand sensory conflict to mean a discontinuity between either visual, proprioceptive, and somatosensory input, or se … em in integration of sensory information and long-term memory, in the expression of the symptoms of motion sickness, and the impact of anti-motion sickness drugs and stress hormones on limbic system function. The limbic system may be the neural mismatch center of the brain.

The relationship of motion sickness susceptibility to learned autonomic control for symptom suppression.

Twenty-four men were randomly assigned to four equal groups matched in terms of their Coriolis Sickness Susceptibility Index (CSSI). Two groups of subjects were highly susceptible to motion sickness, and two groups were moderately susceptible. All subjects were given six CSSI tests at 5-d intervals. Treatment Groups I (highly susceptible) and II (moderately susceptible) were taught to control their autonomic responses, using a training method called autogenic-feedback training (AFT) before the third, fourth, and fifth CSSI tests. Control Groups III (highly susceptible) and IV (moderately susce…

Dynamics of subjective discomfort in motion sickness as measured with a magnitude estimation method.

Eight subjects, wearing left-right vision reversing goggles, executed sequences of controlled active head movements to provoke motion sickness. Head movement sequences were interspaced with periods of eye closure and no head movement to permit partial remission of symptoms between sequences. Subjects reported the level of discomfort experienced by using a magnitude estimation technique derived from Stevens' (1957) ratio scaling method. Using this approach, we demonstrated that the time course of subjective discomfort exhibits a profile, similar in all our subjects, characterized by both fast a…
