Prediction of Subjective Fatigue in Professional Soccer Players: A Data-Driven Method to Optimize Training Approach to the Match.

In soccer, predicting players' fatigue experienced immediately before a training session or match can help design training programs and optimize performance. This study aimed to identify the most important predictors of daily and match-day fatigue in six Italian professional soccer teams during a competitive season using a framework of big data analytics. Every morning, the players rated fatigue, sleep quality, muscle soreness, stress, and mood. After each training session or match, the session Rating of Perceived Exertion was obtained and multiplied by duration to calculate the training load

Preclinical Multi-Omic Assessment of Pioglitazone in Skeletal Muscles of Mice Implanted with Human HER2/neu Overexpressing Breast Cancer Xenografts.

UNLABELLED: Breast cancer (BC) is the most prevalent cancer worldwide and is accompanied by fatigue during both active disease and remission in the majority of cases. Our lab has measured fatigue in isolated muscles from treatment-naive BC patient-derived orthotopic xenograft (BC-PDOX) mice. Here, we conducted a preclinical trial of pioglitazone in BC-PDOX mice to determine its efficacy in ameliorating BC-induced muscle fatigue, as well as its effects on transcriptomic, metabolomic, and lipidomic profiles in skeletal muscle. METHODS: The pioglitazone and vehicle groups were treated orally for…

Exercise-related fatigue affects joint-driven resistance: comparison of flexor and extensor.

[Purpose] Muscle fatigue can affect the inherent properties of muscles. It is important to know how muscle stiffness changes with muscle fatigue and the different effects of the initial and terminal stages of exercise. Therefore, we aimed to examine the effects of bicep and tricep contraction tasks that lead to fatigue on joint-driven resistance of the elbow joint. [Participants and Methods] Twenty-five healthy men were included. Joint-driven resistance of the elbow joint was measured before and after the muscle contraction task. The slope of the regression line of the angle torque at the time…

Contraction fatigue, strength adaptations, and discomfort during conventional versus wide-pulse, high-frequency, neuromuscular electrical stimulation: a systematic review.

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) can be delivered in a conventional form (CONVNMES) and using relatively wide-pulses and high-frequencies (WPHFNMES). WPHFNMES is proposed to reduce contraction fatigability and generate larger contractions with less discomfort than CONVNMES; however, there are no systematic reviews to guide the selection of NMES types. This systematic review compared the effects of CONVNMES versus WPHFNMES on contraction fatigability, strength adaptations, and perceived discomfort in clinical and non-clinical populations. Eight studies were included. When averaged ac

Does dry needling aid in post-training recovery? A critically appraised topic.

CLINICAL SCENARIO: Following intense physical training, it is common for athletes to develop muscle soreness, muscle tightness and a sense of fatigue. Minimizing the time spent in this state is advantageous to limit time off from sport, potential injury and lack of mental focus. CLINICAL QUESTION: Does dry needling aid in post-training recovery in athletes? SUMMARY OF KEY FINDINGS: A search was performed for articles exploring the effect of dry needling on exercise/training recovery in athletes. Six articles were included in this critically appraised topic. Three articles were randomized con

Effect of Periodic Voluntary Interventions on Trapezius Activation and Fatigue During Light Upper Limb Activity.

OBJECTIVE: The effects of diverse periodic interventions on trapezius muscle fatigue and activity during a full day of computer work were investigated. BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders, including trapezius myalgia, may be associated with repeated exposure to prolonged low-level activity, even during light upper-extremity tasks including computer work. METHODS: Thirty healthy adults participated in a study that simulated two 6-hour workdays of computer work. One workday involved imposed periodic passive and active interventions aimed at disrupting trapezius contraction monotony (Interven…

The hyperaemic and metaboreflex response of the diaphragm during fatiguing diaphragmatic work in humans.

During inspiratory pressure-threshold loading (ITL), the inspiratory muscle metaboreflex (IMM) increases respiratory muscle blood flow, but its effect on diaphragm blood flow (Q̇di) and fatigue in humans, is unclear. Females exhibit an attenuated IMM compared to males during diaphragmatic loading, suggesting less diaphragm blood flow impedance and metaboreflex activation. We hypothesized that diaphragm hyperaemia would relate positively to metaboreflex sensitivity (i.e. mean arterial pressure change; ΔMAP) and fatigue development (i.e. transdiaphragmatic twitch pressure change; ΔPdi,tw), and b

FRFNet: a fatigue-robust EEG-EMG fusion network for hand movement intention recognition.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate movement intention recognition is essential for intelligent rehabilitation systems, wearable assistive devices, and human-machine interaction. Electroencephalography (EEG) reflects cortical motor intention and cognitive regulation, whereas surface electromyography (sEMG) provides peripheral muscle activation information related to movement execution. Although EEG-EMG fusion can provide complementary information from both the central and peripheral nervous systems, EMG signals are easily affected by muscle fatigue during long-duration or high-intensity rehabilitation task…

Preliminary evidence of a blunted anti-inflammatory response to exhaustive exercise in fibromyalgia.

Exercise intolerance, as evidenced by a worsening of pain, fatigue, and stiffness after novel exertion, is a key feature of fibromyalgia (FM). In this pilot study, we investigate whether; insufficient muscle repair processes and impaired anti-inflammatory mechanisms result in an exaggerated pro-inflammatory cytokine response to exhaustive exercise, and consequently a worsening of muscle pain, stiffness and fatigue in the days post-exercise. We measured changes in muscle pain and tenderness, fatigue, stiffness, and serum levels of neuroendocrine and inflammatory cytokine markers in 20 women wit

Effect of exercise training on fatigue and pain in patients with systemic autoimmune myopathies: A systematic review.

Systemic autoimmune myopathies (or idiopathic inflammatory myopathies) are a wide group of rare rheumatic diseases characterized by muscle weakness due to muscle inflammation. Recent evidence has continually reinforced the relevance of the perception of pain and fatigue as parameters of notable contribution to reducing the quality of life of these patients. However, due to the multidimensional characteristic of these variables, few studies address the effects of pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies, such as exercise training on these variables. With regard to patients with systemi
