Music programs designed to remedy burnout symptoms show significant effects after five weeks.

Earlier studies have demonstrated that music interventions can lessen symptoms of depression. Depression and burnout are closely related. We hypothesized that specially designed receptive music therapy programs and protocols might reduce the symptoms of burnout. In a four-arm randomized, placebo- and waiting-list-controlled double-blind study, including 150 participants, two specific music programs significantly reduced burnout symptoms after 5 weeks. The effects were maintained over a long time period. This newly developed method of receptive music therapy was also evaluated for the treatment…

Can children with autistic spectrum disorders perceive affect in music? An experimental investigation.

BACKGROUND: Children with autistic spectrum disorders typically show impairments in processing affective information within social and interpersonal domains. It has yet to be established whether such difficulties persist in the area of music; a domain which is characteristically rich in emotional content. METHODS: Fourteen children with autism and Asperger syndrome and their age and intelligence matched controls were tested for their ability to identify the affective connotations of melodies in the major or minor musical mode. They were required to match musical fragments with schematic repre…

Risks of developing noise-induced hearing loss in employees of urban music clubs.

Noise-induced hearing loss has previously been reported among rock musicians. This study sought to determine whether a hazard of noise-induced hearing loss exists for music club employees other than musicians themselves. Sound levels at eight live-music clubs were measured and symptoms of noise exposure in 31 music club employees were assessed by questionnaire. The average sound level at the various clubs during performances ranged from 94.9 to 106.7 dBA. The overall sound level average, including both performance and ambient levels, ranged from 91.9 to 99.8 dBA. Symptoms of noise exposure, su…

Differing subjective and psychophysiological response patterns to a music-based auditory intervention for anxiety.

Anxiety comprises partially dissociable cognitive and somatic components, yet it remains unclear whether brief interventions modulate these systems in parallel. This randomized controlled trial examined subjective and psychophysiological responses to a brief music-based auditory intervention relative to an active auditory control (pink noise) in undergraduate students reporting recent generalized anxiety symptoms. Participants (N = 83) were randomized to the auditory intervention or pink noise. Cognitive and somatic anxiety were assessed before and after the intervention, while salivary cortis…

Crossing classroom boundaries: school-based music participation and cross-domain learning development in adolescence.

BACKGROUND: In education systems where curriculum time is limited and core academic subjects are strongly prioritized, a key question is whether music participation merely entails opportunity costs in instructional time or is also associated with learning and psychological resources that can be mobilized across disciplinary contexts. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether school-based music participation is associated with domain-general learning engagement and adolescent learning development in a core academic subject; given mathematics' cognitive demands and salient evaluative and emotional…

Music in the Operating Room: Impact on Team Communication, Focus, and Monitoring Patient Safety.

Background Music is commonly played in the operating room (OR), yet excessive noise is a known contributor to miscommunication and surgical errors. This study examined how music choice and surgical phase influence surgical team members' perceptions of concentration, communication, and patient safety among OR staff. Methods A survey was administered via Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) in person, by email, and over Zoom to surgeons, nursing staff, and anesthesia providers. Questions addressed music preferences, who selects the music, and perceived effects during routine versus complex …

Music-evoked EEG signals for mental health assessment using two- and three-class classification.

INTRODUCTION: Electroencephalography (EEG), a non-invasive method of measuring brain activity, has become a valuable tool in mental health research for examining neural activity associated with various psychological disorders and neurofeedback therapies, including music therapy. However, the use of EEG under music and no-music conditions for mental health screening remains insufficiently validated. METHODS: In this preliminary study, we implemented an experimental protocol in which 48 participants underwent EEG recordings during both music and no-music sessions with identical relaxation instr…

Instrumental Learning Approaches in Pre-Professional Music Students: Associations Among Motivation, Strategy and Practice.

Instrumental learning in pre-professional music education involves complex associations among motivational orientations, cognitive strategies, and practice habits; however, their individual-level interrelations have received limited empirical attention in domain-specific research. This study examines these associations among pre-professional music students enrolled in Fine Arts High Schools (FAHS) in Türkiye (N = 332). A cross-sectional correlational design was employed, incorporating descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-tests, one-way ANOVAs with Scheffé post hoc tests, Pearson corre…

Comparable Physiological Stress Responses following Music Listening and Quiet Reading: An exploratory pilot study.

Music listening is a common stress management strategy, but its potential to protect individuals from upcoming stress remains underexplored. This pilot study examined whether music heard before a stressful event alters physiological and psychological responses. Thirty participants were randomly assigned to either listen to 10 minutes of self-selected relaxing music or engage in an active control of quiet reading prior to a modified Trier Social Stress Test. Electrodermal activity (EDA) and heart rate variability (HRV) were recorded with a wearable wristband. Thirteen features were extracted fr…

Protocol for a Three-Arm Controlled Trial of Participatory Music Education in University Students.

Participatory music education may offer a practical group-based approach to supporting university student wellbeing, but protocols that separate active music participation from general music exposure remain limited. This article describes a standardized three-arm controlled trial for evaluating the emotional and social outcomes of participatory music education in university students aged 18-26 years. The age range is used to keep the sample developmentally comparable and reduce heterogeneity related to mature, returning, or part-time students. Participants are allocated to a 6-week participato…

Relative Device-Output Music Intensity and Virtual-Reality-Based Postural Control in Trained Athletes.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Postural control depends on the integration and reweighting of visual, somatosensory, vestibular, and contextual sensory information. Stable auditory cues may support balance, whereas complex musical stimulation may impose additional sensory-cognitive demand during multisensory conflict. This study examined the acute effects of relative device-output music intensity on virtual-reality-based postural control in trained athletes and explored whether responses differed by sport background. METHODS: Forty-eight athletes from tennis, combat sports, swimming, football, and vo…

Valence-arousal interactions between images and music: differential effects on memorisation, discrimination, and fixations.

Prior research has reported differential roles of valence and arousal in guiding memory and attention. However, few studies have systematically examined how these affective dimensions interact across their full spectrum in audiovisual contexts, particularly when multiple images varying in emotional content are simultaneously present. To address this, we used a recognition memory paradigm in which participants viewed arrays of images representing all combinations of positive/negative valence and low/high arousal. Slightly before and during image presentation, music conveying an emotional tone, …

Music processing in behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer's disease: a functional MRI study.

Music engages brain regions involved in perceptual, socio-emotional and cognitive functions that may be relatively preserved in individuals with Alzheimer's disease but seem affected early in behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia. The effects of music in dementia are often assessed through observational studies, leaving the neurophysiological underpinnings of music processing in these dementia types unclear. Improved understanding of these mechanisms is relevant because the effectiveness of music therapy may depend on dementia types. In this study we investigated whether patients with be…

Nightingale: A multimodal approach combining EEG signals and audio features to enhance music therapy.

Music therapy has emerged as a promising, yet underutilized, treatment modality in various clinical settings. This paper presents Nightingale, a novel multimodal approach that integrates audio features with electroencephalogram (EEG) signals to predict a subject's emotional response to music. The accuracy of emotional response predictions is enhanced using audio features coupled with EEG data extracted from the Dataset for Emotion Analysis using Physiological and Audiovisual Signals (DEAP). These combined modalities are used to develop a Multilayer Perceptron and Convolutional Neural Network a…

Participants' Music Experiences Associated With Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy for Life-Threatening Illness: Interpretivist Research.

Limited evidence supports treatment for distress in life-threatening illness. Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PAP) may help. Despite music's presence in PAP, sparse accounts of music-related experiences exist. Such research is needed to optimize music's presence within PAP. This qualitative analysis aimed to understand participants' music-related accounts of their PAP experiences within a randomized controlled trial (RCT) for depression and anxiety associated with life-threatening illness, and participants' perceived mechanisms of change attributed to music during PAP. Participants undergo…

Reconsidering music in stroke rehabilitation: a scoping review from auditory stimulus to relational process.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past three decades, music has been increasingly incorporated into stroke motor rehabilitation; however, the term music-based intervention has been applied inconsistently. Interventions range from simple rhythmic cues to complex interactive activities, yet these distinctions are often insufficiently described to allow meaningful comparison across studies. METHODS: This scoping review examined how music and sound have been conceptualized and applied in stroke motor rehabilitation research published between 1993 and 2023. Ninety-seven studies were identified through major …

Music-Supported Vocal Rehabilitation in Parkinson's Disease: Effects on Voice Intensity and Speech Performance.

Hypokinetic dysarthria is a highly prevalent and functionally disabling communication disorder in Parkinson's disease (PD), encompassing hypophonia, imprecise articulation, and festinating speech. Music-supported vocal rehabilitation-operationalized through the Accent Method (AM), a rhythm- and breathing-based voice therapy approach grounded in hierarchical respiratory-phonatory-prosodic coordination-offers a theoretically grounded mechanism for addressing PD dysarthria by exploiting the well-documented facilitatory effect of external rhythmic auditory cueing on motor control in PD. Despite wi…
