BACKGROUND: Understanding Plasmodium sexual differentiation is crucial for blocking transmission. This study identified risk factors for gametocyte carriage and gametocytemia in P. vivax and P. falciparum to inform malaria elimination strategies at the China-Myanmar border.
METHODS: Gametocytes and asexual parasites were microscopically detected on thick smears collected from 2011 to 2020 in Laiza Township, Kachin State, Myanmar. Mono-/polyclonality were detected by genotyping at Pvmsp3α/β for P. vivax, and Pfmsp1/2 for P. falciparum. Kulldorff's retrospective time scan statistics tested for …

The kukri snake Oligodon albocinctus (Cantor, 1839) is a widespread element of the Indo-Himalayan and Indo-Burmese snake fauna with two dist … ed on 12s16s ribosomal RNA fragments. One of these clades is geographically restricted to southwest Myanmar (Burma) and was recovered as sister to all other populations of O. albocinctus. This lineage was supported as a cryptic yet evolutionarily independent lineage by species delimitation analyses, a partial lack of haplotype sharing based on nuclear DNA …

BACKGROUND: In low-income and middle-income countries in southeast Asia, most deaths occur outside of the health-care system without a medically certified cause of death. We did a verbal autopsy study to determine the underlying causes of death in rural areas of the region and to estimate premature mortality using years of life lost (YLLs).
METHODS: In this population-based observational study, we conducted electronic verbal autopsy surveys for reported deaths in 510 villages in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand from 2021 to 2024. With the WHO 2016 verbal autopsy questionnaire…

Paragonimiasis is a food-born zoonotic parasitosis caused by Paragonimus spp. Six cases of reemerging paragonimiasis within the Karan hill-tribe near the Thai-Myanmar border were evaluated to review clinical manifestations, predisposing factors, and treatment regimens. All patients tested positive for paragonimiasis eggs and presented with an array of symptoms, including chronic cough, hemoptysis, peripheral eosinophilia, and thoracic radiograph abnormalities. All fully recovered after a 2- to 5-day course of 75 to 80 mg/kg/day praziquantel. We conclude that paragonimiasis should be considered…

A new species, namely Doratomantispa pouilloni sp. nov., of the mantidfly subfamily Doratomantispinae, is described and illustrated from a complete individual preserved in mid-Cretaceous amber from Tanai, northern Myanmar. Doratomantispa pouilloni sp. nov. preserves nearly all the diagnostic characters of this subfamily, but differs from the two other species of the genus Doratomantispa, inter alia, in its forelegs with stout trochanter, femora with nine spines on outer edge, two spines on inner edge, tibia with parallel sides, probasitarsomeres with around six pairs of black and thick spines;…

A field trial of 6-monthly ascariasis chemotherapeutic regimens targeted at 1-19-, 1-14-, and 5-19-year-olds was carried out in three communities in rural Myanmar to observe the effects on the prevalence, intensity, and morbidity indicators over 2 years. After periodic chemotherapy, the prevalence and intensity of Ascaris infection in age-targeted and non-age-targeted groups fell in all the study areas, more markedly among the 1-19- and 1-14-year-olds. There was also a decrease in the frequency of vomiting of worms, passing of worms per anus, coughing, abdominal pain and treatment of bowel com…

AIMS: Refugees are confronted with the task of adapting to the long-term erosion of psychosocial systems and institutions that in stable societies support psychological well-being and mental health. We provide an overview of the theoretical principles and practical steps taken to develop a novel psychotherapeutic approach, Integrative Adapt Therapy (IAT), which aims to assist refugees to adapt to these changes. This paper offers the background informing ongoing trials of IAT amongst refugees from Myanmar.
METHODS: A systematic process was followed in formulating the therapy and devising a tre…

Strongyloides stercoralis is a parasitic nematode and a major pathogen responsible for human strongyloidiasis. The presence of this species in the dog population has led to an interest in studying the phylogenetic relationships among Strongyloides spp. in carnivore hosts. In the present study, Strongyloides spp. from various carnivore hosts (raccoon, Japanese badger, Siberian weasel, raccoon dog, masked palm civet, and domestic cat) were sought. Except for civets, Strongyloides spp. were identified in all host species. Based on 18S rDNA sequences, nine OTUs (operational taxonomy units) were id

BACKGROUND: A third of all deaths in children aged <5 years occur in the neonatal period. Neonatal intensive care is often considered too complex and expensive to be implemented in resource poor settings. Consequently the reductions that have been made in infant mortality in the poorest countries have not been made in the neonatal period. This manuscript describes the activities surrounding the introduction of special care baby unit (SCBU) in a refugee setting and the resulting population impact.
METHODS: A SCBU was developed in Maela refugee camp on the Thailand-Myanmar border. This unit com…

We report the case of a Japanese traveler who developed dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) with a probable secondary infection with dengue virus type 2 (DENV-2). DHF usually occurs in children, and rarely in adult travelers. Proper and timely interventions can markedly reduce the mortality rate of DHF patients. The expansion of endemic areas and increased frequency of travel to these areas may suggest increased incidence of DHF in non-endemic areas in the near future. Early recognition of reinfection with dengue virus and warning signs of circulatory failure are crucial to prevent a severe shock s

Cylindrocarpon is a cosmopolitan soil fungus, which rarely causes human disease. It has infrequently been reported as causing keratitis, mycetoma, osteomyelitis and peritonitis in chronic peritoneal ambulatory dialysis patients and disseminated infection in leukemic neutropenic hosts. This report describes a case of invasive infection caused by Cylindrocarpon lichenicola, localized in the right foot of an otherwise immunocompetent traveler.

The world's last known case of smallpox resulting from human-to-human transmission in an endemic focus occurred in Somalia in October 1977, and there remains the task of documenting the global eradication of the disease and establishing the safety of vaccination. Those countries as yet uncertified have been grouped into four categories according to the procedures recommended for their certification. An important criterion for deciding the type of procedure is how recently smallpox was endemic in a particular country. This paper is concerned with those countries in which the disease has been no

INTRODUCTION: Malaysia declared its intent to eliminate malaria by 2020, with a phased goal of achieving zero local transmission. Nonetheless, Malaysia is highl susceptible to malaria importation due to geographical proximity to high-burden countries e.g. Thailand, Myanmar and high influx of foreign workers and students from Asia and Africa.
CASE SERIES: We accumulated all malaria cases diagnosed in a tertiary hospital within a period of two years. Three cases were reported, where all of the patients were foreigners with recent travel history to African countries. All of them were infected by…

Japanese encephalitis is the leading cause of viral encephalitis in Asia. In endemic areas annual incidence ranges from 10-100 per 100000 population. Case fatality averages 30% and a high percentage of the survivors are left with permanent neuropshychiatric sequelae. There is no effective drug treatment for this disease. In recent decades, Japanese encephalitis virus has caused epidemics in previously unaffected countries like India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Viet Nam. No effective environmental control is known. Although socioeconomic improvement and changes in agricultural prac…
