[Conjonctival human myiasis by Oestrus ovis in Northern Africa].

Following the publication of a paper on Conjonctival human myiasis by Oestrus ovis in southern Tunisia by Anane and Ben Hssine (Bull Soc Pathol Exot (2010) 103(5):299-304), the author reminds that the discovery of this disease was made in Algeria, in 1907 by Edmond and Etienne Sergent.

Human myiasis in anal carcinomatous ulcer--a case report.

A 65-year-old male having a painless ulcer in the perianal region for last 11 months reported with severe pain in the ulcer for last 5 days and found that worms were crawling out of the ulcer since two days. He was diagnosed as a case of squamous cell carcinoma of the perianal region with human myiasis. The treatment consisted of manual removal of the larvae by topical application of turpentine oil, oral therapy with antibiotics and surgical excision of the ulcerative growth.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with atrophic rhinitis and nasal myiasis.

Hypohidrotic/anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is a rare inherited disorder characterized by hypohidrosis/anhidrosis, hypotrichosis, dysodontia and heat intolerance. Most common mode of transmission is X-linked recessive, showing complete expression in males, and only partial manifestations in the female carrier heterozygotes. Features like atrophic rhinitis, nasal and aural myiasis, syndactyly, cleft lip and/or palate, mental retardation and immunodeficiency are uncommonly seen in this syndrome. We hereby report a case of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with unusual features of atrophic rhini…

Sonographic detection of subcutaneous fly larvae in human myiasis.

Sonographers increasingly face imported diseases such as subcutaneous myiasis. In myiasis, some fly species such as the American Dermatobia hominis and the African Cordylobia anthropophaga use humans as intermediate hosts for the maturation of their larvae. High-resolution gray-scale and color Doppler sonography enabled us to identify D hominis larvae in 2 travelers to Central America by visualizing their typical shape, segmentations, and the continuous fluid transport inside the larval body cavity and spiracles. The small C anthropophaga larva in an individual returning from Namibia was initi…

Cuterebra cutaneous myiasis: case report and world literature review.

BACKGROUND: Most cases of myiasis in North America are caused by fly larvae from South America or Africa, as these cases represent travelers returning from endemic regions. The etiology of creeping eruptions and furuncular lesions in North American patients who have no history of recent travel can therefore be a diagnostic problem. Among cases acquired in North America, Cuterebra species are the usual cause. Dermatologists and dermatopathologists should be aware that this unusual infestation may occur without a travel history. METHOD: Here we report a case of Cuterebra cutaneous myiasis acqui…

[Human myiasis in Bahía Blanca, Argentina. Period 2000 / 2005].

Myiasis is the infestation of live human and vertebrate animals with dipterous larvae which, at least for a short period, feed on the host's dead or living tissue, liquid body-substance, or ingested food. The objective of this study was to identify the flies producing myiasis in Bahía Blanca city, Argentina, from 01/03/2000 to 31/05/2005. Seventeen clinical cases were studied. The larvae obtained from lesions were forwarded from laboratories and from public and private hospitals. Part of the larvae were fixed in alcohol 70 masculine and processed according to the Mazza & Jörg technique (1939).…

Myiasis in sheep farms in Riyadh Region, Saudi Arabia.

During a survey for myiasis in Riyadh Region, 3712 sheep were examined. 73 animals (2%) were infested with different dipterous larvae. Out of the 115 larvae recovered, 100 larvae (87%) were Chrysomya bezziana, 10 (8.7%) were C. albiceps, and 5 (4.3%) were Wohlfahrtia nuba. The prevalence rate of larval myiasis among young sheep was 60%, and 40% among adults. The myiasis incidences were highest during Mar-May (60%) and Sept-Nov (31.5%) where temperature and R.H. are optimum. In the dry hot season (Jun-August) and cold season (Dec-Feb) infestation incidences were low (5%&1.5% respectively). Temp…

Dermatobia hominis myiasis among travelers returning from South America.

Dermatobia hominis is the most common cause of myiasis in Central and South America, affecting mammals and humans, causing nonhealing furuncle-like lesions. During the years 1994 to 1999, 14 Israeli travelers returning from South America were diagnosed with D hominis myiasis. The approach consists of correct diagnosis and a proper removal of the larvae, after which the patients heal with no complications.

Oestrus ovis larval myiasis among goats in northern Jordan.

From December 1998 to December 1999, heads of 520 local goats slaughtered at the Irbid, Ramtha and Howarra Abattoirs (northern Jordan) were examined for the three larval instars (L(1)-L(3)) of Oestrus ovis. Of 520 heads, 126 (24%) were infested with O. ovis larvae. All three larval instars were observed in both sexes; all age groups were infested in each month of the year. The mean age of the goats sampled was 1.5 years. The numbers of parasites infesting hosts showed a significant (P<0.05) correlation with sheep age (r(sp)=0.31-0.42) for all three larval instars. The numbers of larvae in each

[Diagnostic image (109). A man with furuncles. Cutaneous myiasis].

A 27-year-old man had 'furuncles' after a one-month stay in Gambia, which proved to be cutaneous myiasis due to Cordylobia anthropophaga.

Nasal myiasis in leprosy leading to unusual tissue destruction.

Nasal mucosal involvement is a constant feature in lepromatous leprosy (1). Granulomatous infiltration of nasal mucosa and consequent sensory loss may result in atrophic rhinitis and or painless ulceration, which is usually asymptomatic except for later complications of epistaxis, septal perforation, inflammation, and/or myiasis in long neglected patients. An unusual destruction of nasal architecture mimicking cancrum oris caused by myiasis in lepromatous leprosy is described for its rarity.

Cutaneous myiasis caused by larvae of Cordylobia anthropophaga (Blanchard).

BACKGROUND: Cordylobia anthropophaga (Blanchard) is a nonhematophagous dipteron belonging to the Calliphoridae family. It produces a myiasis called "tumbu fly" or "ver de Cayor" or "mango fly" or "skin maggot fly". CASE REPORTS: We describe two women, 24 and 23 years of age, affected by cutaneous myiasis caused by the larva of Cordylobia anthropophaga. In both cases the myiasis was contracted in Senegal and was characterized by a single lesion localized to the flank and the thigh respectively. From each of these lesions a single larva was extracted. DISCUSSION: This myiasis represents a typi…

Dermatobia hominis myiasis masquerading as an infected sebaceous cyst.

In an apparently routine case, what appeared to be infected sebaceous cysts of the scalp turned out to harbour botfly larvae imported from a tropical country. Although the parasite Dermatobia hominis is not indigenous to the United States, cutaneous myiasis caused by the fly is fairly common in Central and South America, and several cases have been reported in people returning or emigrating from these regions. The authors therefore suggest that infection resulting from D. hominis invasion be considered in persons who present with furuncular lesions and give a history of travel to endemic areas…
