Regulated and Unregulated Clinical Trials of Stem Cell Therapies for Stroke.

Several lines of laboratory investigations reporting solid safety profiles and robust efficacy readouts of stem cells in clinically relevant animal models have advanced stem cell transplantation as an experimental therapy for stroke. Unfortunately, translating laboratory findings into effective clinical trials entails rigorous regulatory examinations, which posed a major challenge in the application of stem cells to patients. As a consequence of this slow pace of clinical entry, and a media-propagated hype narrating stem cells as a “magic bullet”, a dangerous market has been created for unregu

An Autoethnographic Examination of Postpartum Depression.

PURPOSE: This article examines postpartum depression (PPD) using autoethnography to explore the stigmatization of depression and cultural expectations of motherhood. Because the personal experiences of living with PPD are often absent from primary care literature, this article uses first-person narrative and analysis of intensive mothering to explore the barriers to seeking PPD treatment, the need for increasing physician confidence and comfort using screening tools, and the impact PPD stigma has on patients and their health care. METHODS: Autoethnography, as a relatively unfamiliar methodolo

Laparoscopic Single-Incision Supracervical Hysterectomy for an Extremely Large Uterus with Bag Tissue Extraction.

OBJECTIVE: To describe and demonstrate the single-incision laparoscopic technique with an articulated energy device for a uterus larger than 20 cm. DESIGN: Stepwise demonstration of the single-site surgical technique and tissue extraction with narrated video footage (Canadian Task Force classification III). SETTING: Single-incision laparoscopic hysterectomy can be difficult because of the long operating time, steep learning curve, and need for articulated instruments, and it is especially challenging in patients with a uterus larger than 20 cm. However, the advantages of single-site laparosc

Acute Cholecystitis Following Total Knee Replacement: A Case Report and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Sub-acute septic arthritis of knee following a thorn prick injury to patella is an uncommon condition and seen in active playful children. The child may be afraid to narrate the incident to their parents or examining doctor, so a high index of suspicion is must. The delayed presentation is inevitable. Early synovitis due to the organic biological foreign body may progress to septic arthritis, if untreated may result in knee stiffness or chronic osteomyelitis of patella. CASE REPORT: We report a case of thorn prick injury to the left patella in an 8-years-old boy who neglected th

The inversion of the fall: on identity construction in anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa can be comprehended as an illness in the broader context of Western culture. The myth of the Fall, narrating a forbidden act of eating, provides a symbolic background of a philosophical-anthropological comprehension of the identity of man, which frames a clinically relevant point of view of anorexia nervosa. The formation of identity in its broader anthropological sense and particularly with people suffering from anorexia nervosa is subjected to a philosophical and psychological analysis consulting the relevant philosophical, sociological and psychodynamic literature. The orde

Robust cortical encoding of slow temporal modulations of speech.

This study investigates the neural representation of speech in complex listening environments. Subjects listened to a narrated story, masked by either another speech stream or by stationary noise. Neural recordings were made using magnetoencephalography (MEG), which can measure cortical activity synchronized to the temporal envelope of speech. When two speech streams are presented simultaneously, cortical activity is predominantly synchronized to the speech stream the listener attends to, even if the unattended, competing-speech stream is more intense (up to 8 dB). When speech is presented tog

Experience of sexual violence among women in HIV discordant unions after voluntary HIV counselling and testing: a qualitative critical incident study in Uganda.

HIV-serodiscordant relationships are those in which one partner is infected with HIV while the other is not. We investigated experiences of sexual violence among women in HIV discordant unions attending HIV post-test club services in Uganda. A volunteer sample of 26 women from three AIDS Information Centres in Uganda who reported having experienced sexual violence in a larger epidemiological study were interviewed, using the qualitative critical incident technique. Data were analysed using TEXTPACK, a software application for computer-assisted content analysis. Incidents of sexual violence nar

[Cuauhtémoc in the defense of Mexico-Tenochtitlan: The work of Luis Ortiz Monasterio in Oaxtepec].

The monumental sculptural work "Cuauhtémoc en la defensa de México-Tenochtitlan", executed by Luis Ortiz Monasterio in 1964, stands as an historical testament of relevance within the context of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). Strategically located at the Oaxtepec Vacation Center of the IMSS, the piece encapsulates the transcendence of art and history in promoting social welfare and national identity. This article aims to review the sculptural contributions of Ortiz Monasterio, a central figure of the Mexican School of Sculpture whose legacy extends across several monumental works

[Some psycho-social consequences of compulsory isolation and preventive distancing measures implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic in women with prolonged hospitalisation in an Argentinean neuropsychiatric hospital].

INTRODUCTION: This research project was initiated in response to a critical issue identified by the team at Esteves Hospital. This issue pertains to the necessity for hospitalised women to narrate their experiences during the pandemic and to examine the potential impact of confinement on outpatient work. The objective of this study is to produce knowledge about the approach to mental health in the context of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic from the perspective of hospitalised users. Furthermore, this study aims to make the situation of these women visible in order to contribut

However, most women stated that they would undergo membrane sweeping again in a future pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS: When embedded in shared decision-making, membrane sweeping can be a well-accepted initial induction option. Moreover, structured antena …

Epidemic imaginaries in literature and film: a comparative study of narrative responses to plague and pandemic.

Epidemics have historically been both biomedical disasters and cultural stories that societies interpret and recount. This study explores the epidemic imaginary, examining how literature and cinema symbolically depict contagion by analysing narratives of contagion produced during the Plague era in literature and modern pandemic representations in film. The research considers some plague-era literature, such as Albert Camus' The Plague (1947) and Thomas Mann's Death in Venice (1912), alongside more recent pandemic literature like Dean Koontz's The Eyes of Darkness (1981), as well as two films:

Earliest memories and family history knowledge among New Zealand Māori, European, and Chinese adolescents in relation to identity and well-being.

Cultural differences exist in early autobiographical memories. This study included 268 New Zealand youth (12-21 years) who identified primarily as New Zealand Māori (NZM; n = 91), New Zealand European (NZE; n = 90), or New Zealand Chinese (NZC; n = 88). Participants narrated their earliest memories and reported on their age at the time of the event; memory narratives were coded for coherence and content. Participants also reported on their family history knowledge, identity (ethnic identity and personality traits), and well-being. The main finding was that of no cultural, gender, or age differ

Without Informed Consent: The Global Export of a Failed Paradigm of Care.

The discourse around health as a human rights issue usually focuses on access to medical treatment. However, the "right to health" begins with the right to informed consent about the merits of a treatment, which has been lacking as a US-constructed "disease" model of psychiatric care has been exported around the globe. The narrative that supported the adoption of the disease model told of how major psychiatric disorders were due to chemical imbalances in the brain, which could be treated by a second generation of psychiatric drugs that fixed those imbalances, much like "insulin for diabetes."

Talent has no race, has no face - but it has a skin colour: The 'appropriate femininity' with the case of Kurdish-Swedish Actress Evin Ahmad.

Sexist and misogynist attitudes towards actresses in the mainstream film industry and other media have been the target of feminists for decades. Stigmatized and stereotyped images of immigrants on the screen have also been scrutinized. However, very little attention has been given to the ways in which actresses with foreign background, not necessarily from Black communities, are portrayed and narrated. Addressing this issue would reveal how non-Western body images on screen are racialized according to certain Western beauty standards. Sweden is often described as the most gender-equal film ind

Oxidative Stress and Redox Signaling in the Pathophysiology of Liver Diseases.

The increased production of derivatives of molecular oxygen and nitrogen in the form of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) lead to molecular damage called oxidative stress. Under normal physiological conditions, the ROS generation is tightly regulated in different cells and cellular compartments. Any disturbance in the balance between the cellular generation of ROS and antioxidant balance leads to oxidative stress. In this article, we discuss the sources of ROS (endogenous and exogenous) and antioxidant mechanisms. We also focus on the pathophysiological signific

'You have all those emotions inside that you cannot show because of what they will cause': Disclosing the absence of one's uterus and vagina.

This article examines young women's experiences of telling others that they have no uterus and no, or a so-called small, vagina - a condition labelled 'congenital absence of uterus and vagina', which falls within the larger category of 'atypical' sex development. Our aim is to investigate how affective dissonances such as fear and frustration are expressed in young women's narratives about letting others know about their 'atypical' sex development, and how these women narrate desired steps to recognition. By drawing on feminist writings on the performativity of affects or emotions, we examine

Comparative evaluation of various solubility enhancement strategies for furosemide.

Drugs with good solubility exhibit good oral absorption, and subsequently good bioavailability. Thus, most exigent phase of drug development practice particularly for oral dosage forms is the enhancement of drug solubility. This review describes various traditional and novel methodologies proposed for the solubility enhancement of furosemide. For furosemide, solubility and permeability are crucial rate limiting factors to achieve its desired level in systemic circulation for pharmacological response. Thus, problematic solubility of furosemide is one of the main challenges for dosage form devel
