Extracranial metastasis of primary central nervous system neoplasms is uncommon and has not been described in the dog. We report the clincopathologic features of intracranial meningioma with pulmonary metastasis in three dogs (case No. 1: 13-year-old castrated male Boxer dog; case No. 2: 14-year-old spayed female Dachshund; case No. 3: 6-year-old spayed female German Shepherd Dog). Case No. 1 presented with ataxia, lethargy, vomiting, and leaning and falling to the right, and had a transient remission following radiation and corticosteroid therapy; case No. 2 had a history of seizures that wer

A solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas is a rare tumor accounting for 1-2% of exocrine pancreatic neoplasms and around 5% of cystic pancreatic lesions in adults. It predominantly affects young women and is usually diagnosed incidentally due to its non-specific clinical presentation. Although its exact cause is unclear, it is believed to originate from pluripotent cells of the genital ridges. We report the case of a 26-year-old female patient with an asymptomatic epigastric mass. An magnetic resonance scan revealed a large, heterogeneous lesion in the head of the pancreas, with no evi

Neoplasms of the bovine gastrointestinal tract are rare, possibly because of the low age of the sample population (slaughtered cattle). Forestomach neoplasia (papilloma/squamous cell carcinoma) has a high incidence in cattle from northern England and Scotland because of the mutagenic effects of bracken fern consumption and its interaction with BPV-4. Lymphosarcoma in the abomasum occurs in 41 per cent of cattle with lymphosarcoma, the most common bovine neoplasm in the United States. Small intestinal adenocarcinoma is associated with the papilloma/squamous cell carcinoma complex in the foresto

INTRODUCTION: Pleural effusions can present a diagnostic challenge as they are not always caused by malignancy in patients with a history of typical visceral primaries.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: At 2 major academic medical centers, we have identified several cases in which salivary gland neoplasms metastasized to pleural effusions in patients who have been aggressively managed with various treatment modalities including chemotherapy, radiation, and/or surgical excision.
RESULTS: Herein, we present a range of primary salivary gland tumors that metastasized to serous effusions and characterize the

This was a retrospective analysis of 177 histologically confirmed cases of oesophageal carcinoma seen in the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria over a period of 30 years. Oesophageal carcinoma constituted 0.6 per cent of all malignant neoplasms and 1.4 cases per 1000 surgical biopsies during the study period. Dysphagia and weight loss were the most common clinical manifestations. Ninety three patients presented within one year of onset of clinical symptoms. The peak age incidence occurred in the seventh decade of life. Sex distribution was equal. The middle third of the oesophagus wa

NZR/Gd is a new inbred strain of albino rats subject to epithelial mesotheliomas of the heart and also to hepatic glycogen storage disease. The age-specific incidences of neoplasms in 650 untreated NZR rats are tabulated by sex and histopathologic type. In males the most common neoplasms were artio-caval mesotheliomas (12 per cent.) and lung adenomas (10 per cent.), while in females most were pituitary adenomas (23 per cent.), lung adenomas (10 per cent.) or tumours of breast (7 per cent.), heart (4 per cent.) or liver or uterine cervix (3 per cent.). Uncommon tumours (less than 2 per cent.) w

Gastric neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs), historically termed gastric carcinoids, are rare in dogs and poorly characterized in veterinary medicine. A 13-year-old spayed female Maltese dog was evaluated for an incidentally detected abdominal mass. Computed tomography revealed a contrast-enhancing gastric body mass and an enlarged regional lymph node suspicious for metastasis. Surgical excision and histopathology confirmed a well-differentiated gastric NEN with regional lymph node metastasis. Immunohistochemical findings supported neuroendocrine differentiation and helped exclude major differenti

Conventional ultrasound(US) plays an important role in check-up, while contrast-enhanced ultrasound(CEUS) is a valuable tool for distinguishing tumor characteristics and guiding subsequent diagnosis and treatment. We present a rare case of duodenal neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) with liver metastasis in a young male, whose liver masses were detected by US during a check-up and then subsequently underwent Sonazoid-CEUS examination in the outpatient department. The lesions in the liver showed rapid hyper-enhancement in the arterial phase followed by early washout in the portal venous phase, fin

The colon cancer (CC) is the fourth most common cancer in the world. It is associated with metastatic spread in 50% of cases in the course of the disease. Common sites for synchronous metastases from colorectal cancer are the lung, liver, peritoneum, bone and brain. The frequency of ovarian metastasis from CC varies widely from 1.6 to 7.4%. This type of metastasis is difficult to distinguish clinically from primary ovarian neoplasms. We present a case of a 49-years old woman admitted to the Department of General Surgery at the 5th Military Clinical Hospital in Cracow for elective surgery for m

Neoplasms from almost every tissue have been reported to metastasize to the pituitary. Gastric carcinoma is a rare cause of metastases in pituitary gland. Gastric carcinoma will be the primary tumor in less than 2% of patients with pituitary gland metastases. We report the case of a 60-years old white man with liver metastasis from gastric cancer with fair presentation symptoms of pituitary gland metastasis. Basal endocrinological work-up showed corticotroph, gonadotroph, somatotroph and thyrotroph cell insufficiency; serum PRL was elevated and no deficit of the ADH level was observed. Despite

BACKGROUND: Metastasic deposits from malignancies frequently lodge in the skeleton, including the jaw bones.
METHOD: A review of the literature was performed in order to provide a coherent overview on the pathogenesis of bone metastasis.
RESULTS: Bone metastasis follows complex molecular interactions that enable tumor cells to detach from the primary site, invade the extracellular matrix, intra-vasate, extra-vasate, and proliferate within bone. They induce local bone changes that could manifest radiologically as either osteolytic or radiodense. In addition to the direct bone changes, maligna

Glucagonomas are functioning pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs) responsible for glucagonoma syndrome. This study aims to shed light on the clinicopathological and molecular features of these neoplasms. Six patients with glucagonomas were identified. All neoplasms were investigated with immunohistochemistry for neuroendocrine markers (Synaptophysin, Chromogranin-A), ATRX, DAXX, ARX, and PDX1 transcription factors. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) for assessing alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT), and next-generation sequencing (NGS) for molecular profiling were performed.

Hidradenocarcinomas are rare cutaneous adnexal malignancies with sweat gland differentiation that can show a broad spectrum of histomorphologic appearances, ranging from low to high grade. The diagnosis of low-grade hidradenocarcinoma can be challenging and may be mistaken for benign hidradenomas, especially on superficial and partial samples. We performed a retrospective analysis of 16 low-grade hidradenocarcinomas, obtained from 4 large academic institutions. All neoplasms presented clinically as nodular lesions that ranged in size from 1.5 to 6.0 cm. All patients were adults and their age r

A direct relationship has been firmly established between cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression and malignant behavior in human melanoma. This report examines the relationship between COX-2 expression and tumor location, mitotic and proliferative indices, degree of T CD3(+) lymphocyte infiltration, overall survival, and frequency of recurrence and metastasis of 57 melanocytic tumors (25 oral and 32 cutaneous). COX-2 was highly or moderately expressed in 88% of oral neoplasms (22 of 25), whereas for their cutaneous counterparts, COX-2 expression was low or insignificant in 75% of cases (24 of 32)

INTRODUCTION: Middle ear glandular neoplasms are infrequent causes of a middle ear mass. They can have exocrine and/or neuroendocrine differentiation. It is currently thought that these tumors are indistinguishable each from another. Herein, we present a new case of a middle ear glandular neoplasm. Our objective is to review all cases described in the literature in order to identify the clinical features, the gross pathology, the histopathology, the immunohistochemistry, to discuss the differential diagnosis, the treatment, the rate of recurrence, the follow-up, the incidence of metastasis, th

Reports on neoplasms in bears are scarce, especially concerning ovarian tumors. A large primary ovarian neoplasm with multiple metastasis was found during the necropsy of a 14-year-old free-ranging Eurasian brown bear (Ursus arctos) from Northwestern Spain. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry allowed for the diagnosis of a sex cord stromal tumor. This is a complex group of neoplasms which differ in the predominant cell morphology and immunohistochemical features. The microscopic examination revealed two types of cells, one with eosinophilic cytoplasm, intermingled with larger vacuolated ce

BACKGROUND: Haematological neoplasms account for around 9% of all cancers, and they are recognised as an important cause of skin infiltration. However, studies analysing cutaneous metastasis of haematological neoplasms are scarce. We describe the clinical spectrum and outcomes of specific cutaneous manifestations of leukaemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma (MM), and blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDN) and make a review of the literature.
METHODS: Data from 49 patients diagnosed with secondary cutaneous infiltration of systemic haematological neoplasms over the last 10 years in

The computed tomography (CT) appearances of intussusception in 14 patients and the clinical follow-up of this condition in 17 adults with known primary malignant neoplasms were retrospectively reviewed. The ages of the 11 men and six women ranged from 25 to 83 years. Nine patients had been treated for malignant melanoma and the others for various primary neoplasms. Intussusception on CT was characterized by thickening of the affected bowel segment in all 14 patients and by the presence of intraluminal fat density material in 13, a concentric ring or "target" lesion in four, and an intra-lumina

BACKGROUND: The rising incidence of colorectal neoplasms, and in particular those localised in the lower rectum is stressed and the therapeutic opportunities offered by the trans-anal resection technique are underlined.
METHODS: The indispensable conditions for adopting a surgical approach are pointed out. These are identified as the size of the neoplasm, which should not exceed 4 cm, the fixity, site, the polypoid and non-ulcerated nature of the lesion, and the involvement of not more than 1/4 of the circumference of the bowel. Using these inclusion criteria, the authors operated on five pat
