The effects of pinealectomy (PX) and melatonin (Mel) administration on the growth processes of Guerin epithelioma, a malignant tumour derived from spontaneous cancer in Wistar rat uterus, was investigated in five groups of male rats. The mean life span of the rats bearing Guerin tumours (GT) and subjected to PX was shorter than in animals with an intact pineal gland. The carcinogenic effect of a single intraperitoneal injection of N-bis(2-hydroxypropyl)nitrosamine (DHPN) was studied in male Wistar rats for 52 weeks. Adenomas were induced in 100% of rats treated with more than 2 g/kg body weight DHPN. Adenocarcinomas were induced in 7%, 25%, 86% and 74% of rats treated with 1, 2, 3 and 4 g/kg body weight, respectively. Hyperthermia appears to be an important adjunct to present day cancer therapies. A literary review indicates that at least 60 of the patients studied showed improvement-primarily relief of pain. Radiographically, approximately 50% of the patients demonstrated a remission or decrease in the size of the tumor (4-7, 9, 10). Although further research in hyperthermia continues, amputation of a limb because of osteogenic sarcoma or malignant melanoma may no longer be the primary treatment of choice.

Noninbred Sprague-Dawley rats were administered 1,2-dimethylhydrazine hydrochloride (DMH) by gavage or methylazoxymethanol acetate by sc inoculation. Thereafter, one group was given water to which 0.1% sodium barbiturate was added, and the other was given drug-free water. They were examined 20 weeks after onset of the experiments. A direct relationship was noted between dosage of DMH and numbers of intestinal tumors induced in the rats. The rats provided with sodium barbiturate-supplemented water developed more intestinal tumors than did those that drank drug-free water.

Disulfiram, diethyldithiocarbamate, and bis-(ethylxanthogen) inhibit symmetrical 1,2-dimethylhydrazine dihydrochloride (DMH)-induced neoplasia of the large bowel in female CF1 mice. These three compounds contain a carbon disulfide (CS2) moiety in their structure. In the present study, CS2 itself was found to inhibit DMH-induced neoplasia of the large bowel in female CF1 mice. Thus a relatively simple compound is now available for investigation of the mechanism of inhibition of DMH-induced neoplasia by a group of sulfur-containing inhibitors having common structural features.

Five cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) were infected with Schistosoma intercalatum, a helminth that is morphologically similar to Schistosoma haematobium.
