Two outbreaks of Q fever were reported in the Netherlands in 2007 and 2008. The ongoing 2008 outbreak in the south-eastern part of the Netherlands is the largest community outbreak ever described, with 808 cases reported until August 2008. The changing epidemiology of Q fever is most likely related to intensive goat farming, and has important implications for the clinical care of patients in endemic areas. To gain insight into hepatitis B virus (HBV) transmission in the Netherlands, epidemiological data and sera were collected from reported cases of acute HBV infections in the Netherlands in 2004. Cases were classified according to mode of transmission. A fragment of the S-gene of HBV (648 bp) was amplified, sequenced, and subjected to phylogenetic analysis. A majority of Dutch women present their request for termination of pregnancy very early after their missed period. For these women, medical abortion with mifepriston and misoprostol is a good option. The method is only rarely used in The Netherlands. A change in attitude of the care-providers, dissemination of information to women and new legislation is needed to increase the use of this non-invasive treatment, which has proven to be safe up to 9 weeks in the home situation.

While stage is the most important factor for determining cancer survival, population-based survival data according to stage are rarely presented. We present such data for a large population diagnosed with cancer in the area covered by the Amsterdam Cancer Registry for the period 1989-2001 (n=108,251). The objective of this paper is to describe the severe epidemic of classical swine fever (CSF) in The Netherlands in 1997-1998 under a policy of non-vaccination, intensive surveillance, pre-emptive slaughter and stamping out in an area which has one of the highest pig and herd densities in Europe.
