Involvement of ordinary what and where auditory cortical areas during illusory perception.

The focus of the present study is on the relationships between illusory and non-illusory auditory perception analyzed at a biological level. To this aim, we investigate neural mechanisms underlying the Deutsch's illusion, a condition in which both sound identity ("what") and origin ("where") are deceptively perceived. We recorded magnetoencephalogram from healthy subjects in three conditions: (a) listening to the acoustic sequence eliciting the illusion (ILL), (b) listening to a monaural acoustic sequence mimicking the illusory percept (MON), and (c) listening to an acoustic sequence similar t

Resting-state brain networks in type 1 diabetic patients with and without microangiopathy and their relation to cognitive functions and disease variables.

Cognitive functioning depends on intact brain networks that can be assessed with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques. We hypothesized that cognitive decrements in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) are associated with alterations in resting-state neural connectivity and that these changes vary according to the degree of microangiopathy. T1DM patients with (MA(+): n = 49) and without (MA(-): n = 52) microangiopathy were compared with 48 healthy control subjects. All completed a neuropsychological assessment and resting-state fMRI. Networks were identified using multisubject ind

Opposing roles of PlexinA and PlexinB in axonal branch and varicosity formation.

Establishing precise synaptic connectivity during development is crucial for neural circuit function. However, very few molecules have been identified that are involved in determining where and how many synapses form. The Plexin cell-surface molecules are a conserved family of axon guidance receptors that mediate axon fasciculation and repulsion during neural development, and later in development PlexinA receptors are involved in eliminating axonal branches and synapse numbers. Here we investigate the roles of PlexinA and PlexinB receptors in axonal branch and varicosity formation in Drosophil

Different classifications of UPOs in the parametrically different chaotic ISI series of a neural pacemaker.

Various interspike intervals (ISIs) in a series of spontaneous discharges of experimental neural pacemakers were identified as chaotic and as lying between stable period 2 and stable period 3. The method of So et al. for detection of unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) was applied to analyze two chaotic ISI series generated under the action of [Ca2+]o in different concentrations. In the chaotic ISI series near the stable period 2, an unstable period 2 orbit was detected. In the chaotic ISI series near the stable period 3, both an unstable period 2 orbit and an unstable period 3 orbit were detected

Distinct temporal patterns of beta bursts differentiate successful and failed movement cancellation.

Beta bursts, transient increases in beta-band activity in the brain, have been implicated in action stopping. However, it remains unclear how their temporal dynamics directly map onto the stop process. By analyzing human electroencephalography (EEG) recordings from the stop-signal task, we found that after the stop signal, frontal beta burst rates increased earlier when movement was successfully canceled than when it was not. Temporal decoding and low-dimensional neural trajectory analyses further corroborated this finding, showing that multi-channel beta burst patterns diverged between stop a

Wafer-scale SOT-MRAM for analog crossbar array applications.

Analog crossbar arrays consisting of emerging memory devices can alleviate the computational strain required by vector matrix multiplications for neural network applications. The ability to produce spin orbit torque-magnetic random-access memory (SOT-MRAM) at wafer-scale positions SOT-MRAM as a strong memory candidate. In this work, we fabricate and measure 300 mm-compatible SOT-MRAM with 150% tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) ratio, fast (2 ns) and low voltage (<1 V) operation, low energy dissipation (2 pJ), low write noise (0.1%), and low device-to-device variation of 10%. Visual gamma stimulation induces 40 Hz neural oscillations in the human hippocampus and alters phase synchrony and lag.

Nonpharmaceutical approaches based on gamma entrainment using sensory stimuli (GENUS) have shown promise in reducing Alzheimer's disease pathology in mouse models. While human studies remain limited, GENUS has been shown to alleviate aspects of neurodegeneration in patients with Alzheimer's disease. In this study, we analyze intracranial EEG data from 490 contacts across eleven patients with refractory epilepsy in response to three visual stimulation conditions. We find that 40 Hz visual stimulation successfully entrains neural activity beyond early visual areas, including the hippocampus and

Hungry for Knowledge: Octopamine Signaling Regulates Hunger-Enhanced Olfactory Learning.

Hunger, a state of nutrient deficiency, significantly enhances cognitive behaviors by heightening sensitivity to food-related stimuli. However, the mechanisms by which hunger influences olfactory learning remain unclear. In this study, it is shown that aversive or appetitive memory is formed faster in hungry C. elegans. These findings reveal that hunger-induced octopamine release from the interneuron RIC enhances both aversive and appetitive olfactory learning. By analyzing neural circuits downstream of RIC, two distinct pathways involved in memory formation are identified. For aversive learni

Investigating functional brain connectivity patterns associated with two hypnotic states.

While there's been clinical success and growing research interest in hypnosis, neurobiological underpinnings induced by hypnosis remain unclear. In this fMRI study (which is part of a larger hypnosis project) with 50 hypnosis-experienced participants, we analyzed neural and physiological responses during two hypnosis states, comparing them to non-hypnotic control conditions and to each other. An unbiased whole-brain analysis (multi-voxel- pattern analysis, MVPA), pinpointed key neural hubs in parieto-occipital-temporal areas, cuneal/precuneal and occipital cortices, lingual gyri, and the occip

Investigation of factors influencing low physical activity levels in community-dwelling older adults with chronic pain: a cross-sectional study.

Low levels of physical activity in individuals with chronic pain can lead to additional functional impairment and disability. This study aims to investigate the predictors of low physical activity levels in individuals with chronic pain, and to determine the accuracy of the artificial neural network used to analyze these predictors. Community-dwelling older adults with chronic pain (n = 103) were surveyed for their physical activity levels and classified into low, moderate, or high physical activity level groups. Chronic pain-related measurements, physical function assessment, and clinical his

The Effects of Deep Brain Stimulation on Motor Unit Activities in Parkinson's Disease based on High-Density Surface EMG Analysis.

Tremor in Parkinson's disease (PD) is caused by synchronized activation bursts in limb muscles. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is an effective clinical therapy for inhibiting tremor and improving movement disorders in PD patients. However, the neural mechanism of how tremor symptom is suppressed by DBS at motor unit (MU) level remains unclear. This paper developed a data acquisition platform for collecting physiological data in PD patients. Both high-density surface Electromyography (HD-sEMG) and kinematics data were collected concurrently before and after DBS surgery. The MU behaviors were obta

Identification of genes involved in neuronal cell death and recovery over time in rat axotomy and neurorrhaphy models through RNA sequencing.

Facial nerves are frequently injured during cosmetic or other types of facial surgery. However, information on the genes involved in the damage and recovery of the facial nerves is limited. Here, we aimed to identify the genes affected by facial nerve injury and repair using next-generation sequencing. We established a rat axotomy model and a parallel epineurial neurorrhaphy model, in which gene expression was analyzed from 3 days to 8 weeks after surgery. We discovered that ARRB1, SGK1, and GSK3B genes associated with neuronal cell death were upregulated in the axotomy model. In contrast, MFR

Deep Cerebellar Low-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Stimulation Restores Interhemispheric Balance after Ischemic Stroke in Mice.

Ischemic damage after stroke disrupts the complex balance of inhibitory and excitatory activity within cortical network causing brain functional asymmetry. Cerebellar deep nuclei with its extensive projections to cortical regions could be a prospective target for stimulation to restore inter-hemispheric balance and enhance neural plasticity after stroke. In our study, we repeatedly stimulated the lateral cerebellar nucleus (LCN) by low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) for 3 days to enhance rehabilitation after middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in a mouse stroke model. The neural activ

Perception of Rhythmic Speech Is Modulated by Focal Bilateral Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation.

Several recent studies have used transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) to demonstrate a causal role of neural oscillatory activity in speech processing. In particular, it has been shown that the ability to understand speech in a multi-speaker scenario or background noise depends on the timing of speech presentation relative to simultaneously applied tACS. However, it is possible that tACS did not change actual speech perception but rather auditory stream segregation. In this study, we tested whether the phase relation between tACS and the rhythm of degraded words, presented in si

Investigation of rat exploratory behavior via evolving artificial neural networks.

BACKGROUND: Neuroevolution comprises the use of evolutionary computation to define the architecture and/or to train artificial neural networks (ANNs). This strategy has been employed to investigate the behavior of rats in the elevated plus-maze, which is a widely used tool for studying anxiety in mice and rats. NEW METHOD: Here we propose a neuroevolutionary model, in which both the weights and the architecture of artificial neural networks (our virtual rats) are evolved by a genetic algorithm. COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHOD(S): This model is an improvement of a previous model that involves
