Automated Sella-Turcica Annotation and Mesh Alignment of 3D Stereophotographs for Craniosynostosis Patients Using a PCA-FFNN Based Approach.

BACKGROUND: Craniosynostosis, characterized by the premature fusion of cranial sutures, can lead to significant neurological and developmental complications, necessitating early diagnosis and precise treatment. Traditional cranial morphologic assessment has relied on CT scans, which expose infants to ionizing radiation. Recently, 3D stereophotogrammetry has emerged as a noninvasive alternative, but accurately aligning 3D photographs within standardized reference frames, such as the Sella-turcica-Nasion (S-N) frame, remains a challenge. METHODS: This study proposes a novel method for predictin

Resolution-enhanced quantitative phase imaging of blood platelets using a generative adversarial network.

We developed a new method to enhance the resolution of blood platelet aggregates imaged via quantitative phase imaging (QPI) using a Pix2Pix generative adversarial network (GAN). First, 1 µm polystyrene beads were imaged with low- and high-resolution QPI, to train the GAN model and validate its applicability. Testing on the polystyrene beads demonstrated a mean error of 4.14% in the generated high-resolution optical-path-delay values compared to the optically acquired ones. Next, blood platelets were collected with low- and high-resolution QPI, and a deep neural network was trained to predict

Application of Convolutional Neural Network Denoising to Improve Conebeam CT Myelographic Images.

Conebeam CT (CBCT) is an imaging technique that provides high-resolution, cross-sectional imaging in the fluoroscopy suite. In neuroradiology, CBCT has been used for various applications including temporal bone imaging and during spinal and cerebral angiography. Furthermore, CBCT has been shown to improve imaging of spinal CSF leaks during myelography. One drawback of CBCT is that images have a relatively high noise level. In this technical report, we describe the first application of a high-resolution convolutional neural network to denoise conebeam CT myelographic images. We show examples of

Autonomous Uncertainty Quantification for Computational Point-of-Care Sensors.

Computational point-of-care (POC) sensors enable rapid, low-cost, and accessible diagnostics in emergency, remote, and resource-limited areas that lack access to centralized medical facilities. These systems can use neural network-based algorithms to accurately infer diagnoses from signals generated by rapid diagnostic tests or sensors. However, neural network-based diagnostic models are subject to hallucinations and can produce erroneous predictions, posing a risk of misdiagnosis and inaccurate clinical decisions. To address this challenge, here we present an autonomous uncertainty quantifica

Computational Radiology in Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis Using Artificial Intelligence.

Breast cancer screening has been shown to significantly reduce mortality in women. The increased utilization of screening examinations has led to growing demands for rapid and accurate diagnostic reporting. In modern breast imaging centers, full-field digital mammography (FFDM) has replaced traditional analog mammography, and this has opened new opportunities for developing computational frameworks to automate detection and diagnosis. Artificial intelligence (AI), and its subdomain of deep learning, is showing promising results and improvements on diagnostic accuracy, compared to previous comp

Cardiac Heterogeneity Prediction by Cardio-Neural Network Simulation.

The bidirectional interactions between brain and heart through autonomic nervous system is the prime focus of neuro-cardiology community. The computer models designed to analyze brain and heart signals are either complex in terms of molecular and cellular interactions or not capable of representing the complex ion channel dynamics. Therefore, scientists are unable to extract the overall behavior of organs by electrical response of heterogeneous cells of brain and heart. In this study, a unified model of excitable cells is proposed that can be modulated by adrenergic features. By implementing t

Risk of data leakage in estimating the diagnostic performance of a deep-learning-based computer-aided system for psychiatric disorders.

Deep-learning approaches with data augmentation have been widely used when developing neuroimaging-based computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems. To prevent the inflated diagnostic performance caused by data leakage, a correct cross-validation (CV) method should be employed, but this has been still overlooked in recent deep-learning-based CAD studies. The goal of this study was to investigate the impact of correct and incorrect CV methods on the diagnostic performance of deep-learning-based CAD systems after data augmentation. To this end, resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) data recorded

Enhancing robustness of spiking neural networks through retina-like coding and memory-based neurons.

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are emerging as a promising alternative to traditional artificial neural networks (ANNs), offering advantages such as lower power consumption and biological interpretability. Despite recent progress in training SNNs and their performance in computer vision tasks, there remains a question of SNN robustness to corrupted images in real-world scenarios. To address this problem, we introduce CIFAR10-C and IMAGENET-C datasets from the ANN field as benchmarks and further propose novel methods to improve SNN corruption robustness. Specifically, we propose a retina-like c

Comparison of neuronal responses in primate inferior-temporal cortex and feed-forward deep neural network model with regard to information processing of faces.

Feed-forward deep neural networks have better performance in object categorization tasks than other models of computer vision. To understand the relationship between feed-forward deep networks and the primate brain, we investigated representations of upright and inverted faces in a convolutional deep neural network model and compared them with representations by neurons in the monkey anterior inferior-temporal cortex, area TE. We applied principal component analysis to feature vectors in each model layer to visualize the relationship between the vectors of the upright and inverted faces. The v

Dynamic Learning Rate in Deep CNN Model for Metastasis Detection and Classification of Histopathology Images.

Diagnosis of different breast cancer stages using histopathology whole slide images (WSI) is the gold standard in determining the grade of tissue metastasis. Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) assists medical experts as a second opinion tool in early detection to prevent further proliferation. The field of pathology has advanced so rapidly that it is possible to obtain high-quality images from glass slides. Patches from the region of interest in histopathology images are extracted and trained using artificial neural network models. The trained model primarily analyzes and predicts the histology im

Bilingua-DPP-IV: A Bimodal Fusion Convolutional Neural Network Model for Prediction of Dipeptidyl Peptidase IV Inhibitory Peptides.

MOTIVATION: Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) is a key therapeutic target for type 2 diabetes, and its inhibitory peptides are a promising class of therapeutic agents. However, the discovery of these promising drugs has been restricted, as many existing computational predictors are based on datasets that have remained static for several years. RESULTS: Here, we first presented a newly curated and expanded benchmark dataset, then introduced Bilingua-DPP-IV, a bimodal deep learning framework that integrates features from both amino acid sequences and molecular structures. Our approach leveraged

A hybrid CNN-GCN framework for interpretable Alzheimer's disease diagnosis from MRI scans.

Medical image analysis for Alzheimer's Disease (AD) diagnosis faces two key challenges: capturing spatial dependencies between anatomically connected brain regions and providing clinically interpretable explanations. While Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) excel at local feature extraction and Vision Transformers handle long-range dependencies, neither explicitly models the relational structure between brain regions-critical for understanding disease progression. We propose a hybrid CNN-GCN framework that: (1) extracts patch-level features instead of using the full image, (2) constructs gra

Autoencoder-Enhanced Convolutional Neural Networks for Plantar Pressure-Based Gait Pattern Recognition: Model Development and Cross-Validated Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: Plantar pressure imaging is a stable modality that reflects gait-related biomechanical characteristics and has been used increasingly for gait assessment and recognition. However, plantar pressure images are high dimensional and nonlinear, making manual feature engineering and conventional machine learning insufficient to capture discriminative patterns. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a gait pattern recognition model based on plantar pressure using an autoencoder (AE)-enhanced convolutional neural network (CNN) and to evaluate its performance against baseline deep learning

Representations of facial features and surface quality in monkey area TE compared to neural network models.

The shape and spacing of facial features are essential for the perception of emotional expressions and the identification of individuals. The surface quality of faces, such as skin texture, eye twinkle, and hair gloss, is valuable for estimating health status. A previous fMRI study in monkeys revealed that regions selective for faces overlapped regions selective for object gloss in the central inferior temporal (IT) cortex, suggesting that the surface quality of faces is processed in area TE. However, the representation of facial surface quality has not been directly examined in this area. To

Skin cancer detection using dermoscopic images with convolutional neural network.

Skin malignant melanoma is a high-risk tumor with low incidence but high mortality rates. Early detection and treatment are crucial for a cure. Machine learning studies have focused on classifying melanoma tumors, but these methods are cumbersome and fail to extract deeper features. This limits their ability to distinguish subtle variations in skin lesions accurately, hindering effective early diagnosis. The study introduces a deep learning-based network specifically designed for skin lesion detection to enhance data in the melanoma dataset. It leverages a novel FCDS-CNN architecture to addres

Single-cell three-dimensional tracking by means of neural networks for sperm rolling classification.

Single-cell analysis enables the extraction of detailed information from individual cells that bulk analysis cannot provide. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) hold great potential in overcoming the challenges deriving from single-cell tracking, providing a powerful framework for automated and high-throughput analysis. In this field, sperm analysis for male infertility assessment finds its application. Indeed, evaluating sperm quality indicators of motility and morphology is essential for this purpose, although the gold standard analysis still relies on manual assessment. Here, we propose an
