UNLABELLED: Aim. To report a case of bilateral Sturge-Weber and Phakomatosis pigmentovascularis with secondary glaucoma in a child. Method.
CASE REPORT: Results. A 4-year-old male child was referred to us for control of intraocular pressure (IOP). Sleeping IOP was 36 mm Hg in right eye and 28 mm Hg in the left eye. The presence of various types of birthmarks was determined in 3,345 Chinese infants under 48 hours of age. Mongolian spots were present in 86.3% of the studied infants. Vascular lesions included salmon patch (22.6%), port-wine stain (0.4%), and strawberry marks (0.7%). Nevocellular nevi (1%), sebaceous nevi (0.1%), and café au lait spots (0.4%) were also found. Three cases of Becker's nevus are described in which acneform lesions were confined strictly within the limits of the hyperpigmentation. The combined phenomenon has not been reported previously, and we conceive it to be either a rare variant of the anomaly or a still rarer coincidence of Becker's nevus and nevus comedonicus.

Incontinentia pigmenti, a syndrome of developmental defects, was found to be associated with acute granulocytic leukemia in a 4-month-old black girl. She has been responsive to antileukemic drugs, and remission has been induced without difficulty after each relapse. Although survival time was expected to be very short because of her age, race, type of leukemia, and initial peripheral leukocyte count at time of diagnosis, she is still alive 35 months after diagnosis of leukemia. One may speculate that the prolonged survival time might be related to the unknown genetic defect.

OBJECTIVE: Describe the morbidity associated with a rare disease due to an embryological defect. METHODS: Retrospective revision of medical and necropsy reports. Bibliographic research using MEDLINE, LILACS and Index Medicus databases. RESULTS: 1 year-old male patient, admitted with generalized tonic-clonic seizures, evolving to deep coma and death in a few hours. Pigmented lesions represent an enormous range of conditions, from benign to malignant tumors, and from infectious to post-inflammatory. Pigmented lesions are much less easily diagnosed on anogenital skin, and clinicians should have a low threshold for biopsy confirmation of diseases not classic in appearance.

Comparison of argyrophilic nucleolar organizer region (AgNOR) counts has been found to yield statistically significant differences between benign and malignant conditions albeit with considerable overlap.
