Smoking among inpatients in treatment for substance use disorders: prevalence and effect on mental health and quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is still prevalent among people with substance use disorders. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevale … sociation between smoking and drop-out. RESULTS: At admission, 75% were daily smokers. Compared to non-smokers at baseline, the smokers had higher drop-out rates (37% vs. 13%), more mental distress, and lower quality of life from baseline up to 6 months follow-up. Those quitting smoking while admitted improved in mental distress and quality of life at the sa …

Long-term outcomes in the smoking claudicant after peripheral vascular interventions.

OBJECTIVE: Emphasis on tobacco cessation, given the urgent and emergent nature of vascular surgery, is less prevalent than standard elective cases such as hernia repairs, cosmetic surgery, and bariatric procedures. The goal of this study is to determine the effect of active smoking on claudicating individuals undergoing peripheral vascular interventions (PVIs). Our goal is to determine if a greater emphasis on education should be placed on smoking cessation in nonurgent cases scheduled through clinic visits and not the Emergency Department. METHODS: This study was performed using the multi-in

Smoking, Alcohol, and Biliary Tract Cancer Risk: A Pooling Project of 26 Prospective Studies.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco and alcohol are well-established risk factors for numerous cancers, yet their relationship to biliary tract cancers remains unclear. METHODS: We pooled data from 26 prospective studies to evaluate associations of cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption with biliary tract cancer risk. Study-specific hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations with smoking and alcohol consumption were calculated. Random-effects meta-analysis produced summary estimates. All statistical tests were two-sided. RESULTS: Over a period of 38 369 156 person-years of fo

Testing the validity of implicit measures of wanting and liking.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Over the last decade, there has been a surge of studies examining implicit processes underlying addiction. Some implicit measures are assumed to reflect "liking" whereas other implicit measures are assumed to reflect "wanting". There is, however, little evidence to back up this claim. We examined whether implicit and explicit measures of wanting and of liking are differentially sensitive to manipulations of wanting and expected that these manipulations would affect primarily measures of wanting. METHODS: Smokers and non-smokers performed both implicit and explicit m…

[Smoking and nicotine dependence].

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of smoking is decreasing. At the same time, studies suggest that the relative proportion of nicotine dependent smokers is increasing. This may leave us with a smaller, but more problematic group of smokers. Few studies have investigated nicotine dependence in Norway. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data were collected in the Young in Norway Longitudinal Study, where 2,890 respondents were followed up from their early teens until their late 20s. Information was collected on smoking habits, nicotine dependence, education, various indicators of social marginalization, anxiety, d

Interaction between smoking and the glycoprotein IIIa P1(A2) polymorphism in non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndromes.

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to determine the interaction between smoking and the glycoprotein IIIa P1(A2) polymorphism in patients admitted with non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndromes (ACS). BACKGROUND: An increased incidence of the P1(A2) polymorphism in smokers presenting with ST-elevation acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has recently been reported. We, therefore, postulated that, as a consequence of this interaction, fewer smokers with the P1(A2) polymorphism would present with non-ST-elevation ACS. METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort analysis of 220 white Caucasoid

Association between smoking status and sarcopenia among middle-aged and older adults: finding from the CHARLS study.

PURPOSE: There is limited information on the association between smoking/smoking cessation and sarcopenia in Chinese populations. We conducted a retrospective cohort study to investigate the association between smoking/smoking cessation and its duration with the risk of sarcopenia. METHODS: This cohort included 6,719 adults over 45 from the CHARLS between 2011 and 2015. Smoking status was categorized into smokers (current smokers/quitters) and non-smokers. Duration of smoking was defined as < 20, 20-29, 30-39, and ≥ 40 years. Duration of smoking cessation was defined as ≤ 1, 2-4, and > 4 year…

Effect of chronic and acute cigarette smoking on the pharyngoglottal closure reflex.

BACKGROUND: Injection of water into the pharynx at a threshold volume induces vocal cord adduction--the pharyngoglottal closure reflex (PGCR). This reflex together with other supraoesophageal reflexes may be helpful in preventing aspiration. Cigarette smoking has an adverse affect on the pharyngo-upper oesophageal sphincter contractile reflex and reflexive pharyngeal swallow. The effect of smoking on PGCR has not been studied previously. AIMS: To elucidate the effect of chronic and acute cigarette smoking on PGCR. SUBJECTS: We studied 10 chronic smokers and 10 non-smokers before and after re…

Increasing frequency of non-smoking lung cancer: Presentation of patients with early disease to a tertiary institution in the UK.

BACKGROUND: Never-smokers with lung cancer often present late as there are no established aetiological risk factors. The aim of the study is to define the frequency over time and characterise clinical features of never-smokers presenting sufficiently early to determine if it is possible to identify patients at risk. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed data from a prospectively collected database of patients who underwent surgery. The frequency was defined as number of never-smokers versus current and ex-smokers by year. Clinical features at presentation were collated as frequency. RESULTS:

Smoking Cigarettes and Tooth Loss in Adults: A Population-Based Analysis.

Introduction: Smoking cigarettes is widely recognized as a significant risk factor for tooth loss. Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the association between cigarette smoking, smoking cessation, and the number of remaining teeth in an adult population. Methods: Data from the Bialystok Plus population study, collected between November 2018 and January 2024, were analyzed. Participants were stratified into young (20-44 years), middle-aged (45-64 years), and older (65 years and above) groups. The outcome was the number of lost teeth. Effect of Smoking on Cepstral Parameters.

Smoking exerts certain damage to the voice, which affects sound characteristics. This study explored the effects of smoking, smoking time, and smoking amount on cepstral parameters. We collected the acoustic signals of sustained vowels in 301 participants (135 smokers and 166 nonsmokers). The cepstral parameters, including cepstral peak prominence (CPP), CPP standard deviation (CPP SD), low to high-frequency spectral ratio (L/H), low to high-frequency spectral ratio standard deviation (L/H SD), and voice disorder cepstral/spectral index of dysphonia (CSID), of the sustained vowels were investi

The independent and combined effects of smoking and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on body mass index trajectories.

Low body mass index (BMI) is a common feature of severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) but in the general population, cigarette smoking is also associated with low body weight. Many people with COPD remain smokers after diagnosis, and it is unclear whether low BMI is because of the disease itself or its most common risk factor. We aim to assess the independent and combined effects of smoking and COPD on BMI trajectories. 27,651 patients without COPD and 25,990 with COPD from The Health Improvement Network (2005-2019) were grouped into: never-smokers, former smokers, sustained qui

Electronic cigarettes for adults with tobacco dependence enrolled in a tobacco treatment program: A pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Electronic cigarettes (ECs) have emerged as a potential harm-reducing alternative for tobacco smokers. However, the role ECs might play in treatment settings is unclear. We conducted an exploratory study of treatment-seeking smokers enrolling in a standard tobacco treatment program who were provided with either a nicotine or non-nicotine EC to use as needed to cease tobacco smoking. METHODS: Treatment-seeking smokers received standard tobacco treatment for 8weeks and were given nicotine transdermal patch therapy, behavioral counseling, and either a nicotine or non-nicotine EC to

Does switching from cigarettes to pipes or cigars reduce tobacco smoke exposure?

Cigarette smoking histories, reported depth of inhalation, number of pipe and cigars (PC) smoked, serum thiocyanate (SCN) and expired air carbon monoxide (CO) levels were examined in PC male smokers enrolled in the Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial (MRFIT). Serum SCN levels for all PC smokers were higher than for non-smokers and lower than for current cigarette smokers. Levels were related to the amount of product smoke. Prior cigarette smokers had higher SCN levels when compared to PC users who had never smoked cigarettes, smoked a larger number of tobacco products per day, and reported…
