Dietitian-Led Feeding Tube Placement: Reducing Nursing Workload and Enhancing Patient Safety in the Intensive Care Unit.

BACKGROUND: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, health care systems nationally are adopting innovative strategies to streamline nursing care while optimizing outcomes. Concurrently, registered dietitian nutritionists are seeking opportunities to maximize their professional contribution and underscore their value as part of the interprofessional health care team. Implementing a feeding tube placement program led by registered dietitian nutritionists, rather than nurses, might enhance patient safety and enable dietitians to practice at an expert level while affording nurses more time for other

Psychological resilience, metacognition, post-traumatic growth, and rumination among undergraduate nursing interns: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Undergraduate nursing students, during their 9-12 month hospital internship in China, commonly experience rumination (repetitive negative thinking) in high-pressure clinical environments, which is closely associated with mental health problems. Previous researchers have suggested that psychological resilience, as a key protective factor, may alleviate this process. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear, particularly regarding the roles of metacognition and post-traumatic growth (positive psychological change following adversity), which warrant further investigation. Theory of Peaceful End of Life: Analysis and Evaluation Using the Whall Framework.

AIM: This study aims to analyse and evaluate the theory of peaceful end of life to determine its relevance and applicability in nursing research, education and practice, particularly in the areas of palliative care and end-of-life care. METHODS: We conducted a theoretical-reflexive study using specific criteria for analysing and evaluating middle-range theories as proposed by Ann Whall (2005). RESULTS: The theory clearly outlines the dying and death process, connecting key concepts and essential statements that support a peaceful end of life. It also implicitly incorporates elements of the n

Creating Perinatal Nursing Care Plans Using ChatGPT: A Pathway to Improve Nursing Care Plans and Reduce Documentation Burden.

BACKGROUND: Extensive time spent on documentation in electronic health records (EHRs) impedes patient care and contributes to nurse burnout. Artificial intelligence-based clinical decision support tools within the EHR, such as ChatGPT, can provide care plan recommendations to the perinatal nurse. The lack of explicit methodologies for effectively integrating ChatGPT led to our initiative to build and demonstrate our ChatGPT-4 prompt to support nurse care planning. METHODS: We employed our process model, previously tested with 22 diverse medical-surgical patient scenarios, to generate a tailor

[Applying Swanson`s Caring Theory to a Patient With End Renal Stage Disease Experiencing Hopelessness].

This article describes an experience providing nursing care to a patient under hemodialysis with the end-stage renal disease who had developed depression, loathing, and other, negative personal perceptions and gradually gave up on life goals due to hopelessness. The duration of nursing care, from August 23rd through August 29th, 2019, was revisited to identify the patient`s hopelessness in the dimensions of physiology, mental status, society, and spirituality. The author applied Swanson`s Caring Theory to facilitate the process of "knowing" and "being with" while performing direct nursing care

A Holistic, Tarot-Inspired Framework for Understanding and Mitigating Burnout in Nurses Through Self-Reflection.

Burnout of nurses is a global occupational hazard characterized by emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced care quality. Often framed as a nurse resilience issue, other evidence suggests organizational and systemic contributors such as workload, staffing shortages, and toxic leadership. This article introduces a holistic, tarot-informed framework for nurse self-reflection based on the Rider-Waite process organized around the Celtic Cross card-position structure. This framework uses card positions and symbolism as prompts to explore psychological, social, professional, and structural influe

Conceptualization and nursing implications of self-imposed activity limitation among community-dwelling elders.

The purposes of this paper are to explore, from a theoretical perspective, explanations for why some community-dwelling elders self-impose activity limitations (SIALs); to develop an integrated explanation for SIAL from a nursing perspective; and to identify some clinical implications of relevance to public health nursing practice. Activity limitation is an important risk factor for functional decline, morbidity, and mortality among community-dwelling elders. Many studies have focused on disease and environmental influences on activity limitations. The intrinsic processes associated with volun

Laugh it off. The effect of humor on the well-being of the older adult.

1. Laughter releases excessive physical and psychological energy, and it reduces stress, anxiety, worry, and frustration. Humor as a skillful nursing intervention can enhance the overall well-being of older adults. 2. If the timing is inappropriate, humor can be a destructive rather than constructive intervention, especially in nursing situations where embarrassing, sensitive, or emotion-laden issues are at hand. 3. This study found that as one ages, one's self-perception of health seems to decrease. Therefore, nurses need to promote a positive outlook toward the aging process and one's own he

Nurses' experiences with assessing pain in patients with dementia in nursing homes: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 80% of long-term care residents in Norwegian nursing homes have dementia. Patients with dementia represent a vulnerable group that tends to underreport pain, mainly due to difficulty expressing pain. Nurses are responsible for assessing pain in patients with dementia when signs of discomfort are evident through behavioural changes. Knowledge of the diagnosis and the patient is essential for proper detection and assessment. We aimed to explore nurses' experiences in assessing pain in patients with dementia in nursing homes. METHODS: Data were collected through eight i

Baruch Spinoza and the Ethics of Care: Towards A Monistic Understanding of Spiritual Care at the End of Life.

Dualism has shaped current healthcare based on the dichotomies of body-mind, science-spirituality and life-death, consolidating a biomedical paradigm that treats the patient as an object, marginalising the spiritual dimension. This article explores Baruch Spinoza's philosophy as an alternative to the ethics of nursing care, integrating the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions within the same ontological continuum. Through a philosophical-conceptual approach inspired by hermeneutic interpretation, key concepts from the work Ethics are presented, inviting the reader to reflect on them i

Becoming Culturally Competent: Transformative Learning in an International, Interprofessional Nursing Placement.

Research indicates that cultural competence is lacking among registered nurses, and nurses commonly report feeling ill-equipped to care for culturally diverse patients. This qualitative study employed a blended methodological approach informed by narrative inquiry and participatory action research to explore undergraduate nursing students' development of cultural competence during an international, interprofessional clinical placement. Ten undergraduate nursing students completed a 3-week clinical placement in partnership with preservice teachers from the Faculty of Education. Aligned with par

Nursing strategies for severe poststroke fatigue: a case report of a structured, multidimensional intervention program.

Poststroke fatigue (PSF) is a complex, multidimensional symptom characterized by a persistent, disproportionate sense of exhaustion that is not fully relieved by rest. It typically manifests as early-onset fatigue with reduced energy reserves, significantly hindering post-stroke recovery. This article reports the nursing process of a patient with a right basal ganglia infarction complicated by severe PSF. After admission, the patient received intravenous thrombolysis and antiplatelet therapy, combined with early-stage rehabilitation. A personalized, phased nursing plan centered on "precise ass…

Implications of transplantation surgery for theatre nurses: 1.

Transplant donors, although legally dead, arrive in operating theatre departments appearing no different from any other preoperative patient. Some theatre staff may not appreciate, or even be aware, that transplant donors have been certified dead before donor surgery. This article, the first of two-parts, examines the implications of organ donation surgery for the emotional and psychological wellbeing of nursing staff. Other potential problems for nursing staff, related to the process of organ retrieval, are also explored. These include the scheduling of transplant work at times when there is
