PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The concept of alcoholic neuropathy has been obscured because of an often undetected or overestimated influence of thiamine deficiency. We describe clinicopathologic features of alcoholic neuropathy, taking the effect of thiamine status into consideration, and recent progress associated with the pathogenesis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Clinical features of alcoholic neuropathy without thiamine deficiency are characterized by slowly progressive, sensory-dominant symptoms. Superficial sensation is predominantly impaired and painful symptoms are the major complaint. Pathologic features

The HIV infection leads to many nutritional problems. For a long time, the Wasting Syndrome was one of the most frequent inaugural features of AIDS and still concerns many patients. The weight loss worsens the prognosis of the disease. The reduced dietary intakes, the increased digestive losses and energetic expenditure result in severe malnutrition. Therefore, the nutritional support and its association with orexigenes, anabolic agents and physical activity has to be carefully selected. The adverse events of new antiretroviral drugs influence the nutritional state and the patient's compliance

Evaluation of nutritional status is a major problem in patients with liver cirrhosis this is due to water retention and the effect of liver function on protein synthesis. Despite problems evaluating the patient, malnutrition has been found to be a common complication in liver cirrhosis and is associated with poorer outcome. Nutritional restrictions, like protein restriction, are no longer recommended in most patients with liver cirrhosis but are considered harmful. An intake of 1 to 1.5 g/kg protein and 25 to 40 kcal/kg body weight a day is recommended (depending on the situation of the patien

BACKGROUND: An increasing trend in the prevalence of thyroid nodules has highlighted whether thyroid nodules are related to the level of iodine nutrition.
METHODS: This 1:1 matched case-control study was conducted to investigate whether thyroid nodules are related to the level of iodine nutrition. The residents who had lived there for more than 5 years with thyroid nodules composed the case group. All the subjects completed questionnaires, and blood and urine samples were collected.
RESULTS: The MUI of the case group in areas with more than adequate iodine intake was lower than that of the c

Glutaric acidemia (GA) are heterogeneous, genetic diseases that present with specific catabolic deficiencies of amino acid or fatty acid metabolism. The disorders can be divided into type I and type II by the occurrence of different types of recessive mutations of autosomal, metabolically important genes. Patients of glutaric acidemia type I (GA-I) if not diagnosed very early in infanthood, experience irreversible neurological injury during an encephalopathic crisis in childhood. If diagnosed early the disorder can be treated successfully with a combined metabolic treatment course that include

Modern professional sports activities are characterized by high training and competitive loads, which are a factor affecting bone metabolism and leading to an increase in injuries, including due to osteoporotic disorders. Nutrition can be classified as a modifiable factor that determines the development and maintenance of bone mass and quality. Correction of athlete's nutrition is an important mechanism aimed at preventing disorders of bone metabolism in elite sports in order to reduce the risk of injuries of the musculoskeletal system. The aim of the research was to analyze modern scientific

OBJECTIVE: [corrected] Our aim was to analyze our results in the management of intestinal failure with a multidisciplinary approach including optimized parenteral nutrition, reconstructive surgery and intestinal transplantation (ITx).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We included all patients evaluated by our team with the diagnosis of IF. We assessed outcome, mortality and complications in children that achieved adaptation and those listed for ITx.
RESULTS: Seventy one children (40 boys, 31 girls) were evaluated between 1997 and 2006 because of IF. Forty eight (76%) were referred from other institution

UNLABELLED: Ferredoxin-2 (FDX2) is an electron transport protein required for iron-sulfur clusters biosynthesis. Pathogenic variants in FDX2 have been associated with autosomal recessive FDX2-related disorder characterized by mitochondrial myopathy with or without optic atrophy and leukoencephalopathy. We described a new case harboring compound heterozygous variants in FDX2 who presented with recurrent rhabdomyolysis with severe episodes affecting respiratory muscle. Biochemical analysis of the patients revealed hyperexcretion of 2-hydroxyadipic acid, along with previously reported biochemical

Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are increasingly prevalent among children and adolescents. Whereas AN has a peak age of onset in early to mid-adolescence, BN typically presents during or after late adolescence. There is a spectrum of eating disorders that can be categorised by the criteria in the fourth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders into AN, BN and 'eating disorder not otherwise specified (ED-NOS)'. The key clinical signs of AN are those of protein calorie malnutrition. In BN, sign

The transition of foods during toddlerhood and the suboptimal diets consumed in the Middle East make children susceptible to malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. Based on international recommendations, coupled with the merits of clinical studies on the application of young child formula (YCF), a group of fourteen experts from the Middle East reached a consensus on improving the nutritional status of toddlers. The recommendations put forth by the expert panel comprised twelve statements related to the relevance of YCF in young children; the impact of YCF on their nutritional parameters

Both genetic and environmental factors are involved in the onset of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In particular, diet composition is suspected to significantly contribute to IBD risk. In recent years, major interest has raised about the role of nutrition in disease pathogenesis and course, and many studies have shown a clear link between diet composition and intestinal permeability impairment. Moreover, many IBD-related factors, such as poor dietary intake, nutrients loss and drugs interact with nutritional status, thus paving the way for the development of many therapeutic strategies in w

Nutrition is an integral component of medical care for people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/autoimmune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) (PLWHA). The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics supports integration of medical nutrition therapy into routine care for this population. Fewer PLWHA experience wasting and undernutrition, while the prevalence of obesity and other chronic diseases has increased significantly. Improved understanding of HIV infection's impact on metabolism and chronic inflammation has only increased the complexity of managing chronic HIV infection. Nutrition assessment

The incidence of malnutrition in hospitalized patients is high in our environment, and sometimes it worsens during the hospital stay (67%). In surgical patients who will be subjected to a surgical intervention and whose ingestion will be suppressed for digestive repose after the post-operative period, the situation becomes more complicated as in addition to their malnutrition there is an increased energetic-proteineic need due to the aggression. The direct relationship between severe malnutrition and an immune deficiency is translated into an increased morbidity (78%), into some extreme cases

UNLABELLED: In summary, epidemiologic and laboratory evidence increasingly demonstrate that nutritional factors, especially reduced fat intake, soy proteins, vitamin E derivatives, and selenium, may have a protective effect against prostate cancer. The experimental observation that low-fat diets and soy protein extracts may influence the progression of established tumors, rather than inhibiting etiologic factors, is particularly intriguing because it may serve to help explain the paradox whereby the incidence of clinical prostate cancer shows wide geographic variation, yet the evidence persist

Total parenteral nutrition has been widely available for almost 20 years. This therapy can demonstrably support growth in neonates and children and will maintain life in adults with an inadequate intestine. It may be beneficial in highly selected preoperative patients, and patients with head trauma. Otherwise, its role in specific disease states or pathologic conditions remains unclear. Whether its benefits outweigh its hazards is largely unknown. Crucial to the decision-making process for initiation of TPN is a knowledge of when starvation becomes detrimental to an individual and whether TPN
