Clinical, randomized, double blind clinical trial to study the effect of parenteral supplementation with fish oil emulsion in the nutritional support in esophagectomized patients.

INTRODUCTION: Esophagectomy is a major surgery with a high degree of catabolic and post-surgical inflammatory response accompanied by high morbidity and significant mortality. Post-surgical nutritional support via enteral administration of ω-3 fatty acids has been seen to be effective although its bad tolerance. There are few clinical trials with parenteral ω-3 fatty acids in these patients. We propose to investigate the effect of combining a parenteral fish oil lipid emulsion with the standard enteral nutrition (EN) support. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prospective, single-center, randomized, doub…

Long-term effects of early nutritional support with new enterotropic peptide-based formula vs. standard enteral formula in HIV-infected patients: randomized prospective trial.

Despite association with adverse clinical outcome, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated malnutrition has been relatively refractory to conventional nutrition management. Consequently, a prospective randomized trial was conducted to evaluate a new peptide-based enteral formula (NEF) in contrast to a standard enteral formula (SEF) in patients with HIV infection. Eighty early-stage largely asymptomatic patients were randomized into a dietary regimen supplemented with either a ready-to-feed NEF (18.7% protein, 65.5% carbohydrate, 15.8% fat; 1.28 kcal/ml) or SEF (14% protein, 55% carbohydr

Individual Amino Acid Supplementation Does Not Enhance Short-Term Proliferation of Selected Cancer Cell Lines In Vitro: Potential Implications for Nutritional Support in Cancer Cachexia.

Background: Cancer-related cachexia is primarily characterized by systemic inflammation and progressive muscle wasting, which is why a high-protein diet (from 1.2 to 1.5 g/kg/day) is commonly recommended. However, concerns remain that an excessive supply of amino acids could promote tumor growth due to the metabolic flexibility of cancer cells, thereby favoring proliferation and survival. Systematic evidence addressing these concerns under controlled conditions for various types of cancer cells remains limited and inconclusive. Methods: We investigated the short-term effects of all 20 amino ac

The developmental and iron nutritional pattern of PIC1 and NiCo does not support their interdependent and exclusive collaboration in chloroplast iron transport in Brassica napus.

The accumulation of NiCo following the termination of the accumulation of iron in chloroplast suggests that NiCo is not solely involved in iron uptake processes of chloroplasts. Chloroplast iron (Fe) uptake is thought to be operated by a complex containing permease in chloroplast 1 (PIC1) and nickel-cobalt transporter (NiCo) proteins, whereas the role of other Fe homeostasis-related transporters such as multiple antibiotic resistance protein 1 (MAR1) is less characterized. Although pieces of information exist on the regulation of chloroplast Fe uptake, including the effect of plant Fe homeosta

Adaptive policies balancing trade, productivity and cropland increases can support Zambia's nutrition security under future climate shocks.

Policies in sub-Saharan Africa are constrained by a limited knowledge of climate change extremes and a focus on agricultural production rather than nutrition supply. Here we model the impacts of future extremes on national-level calorie and nutrient supply in Zambia for production and nutrition focused policy scenarios. We identify the specific cropland, yield and import increases required to achieve climate-resilient nutrition security and highlight policy options.
