With the purpose to minimize the complications in anastomotic surgery, we have developed a new soluble device, the SBS-TUBE. This paper presents our first results in experimental and clinical surgery with this device. In experimental surgery the SBS-TUBE was applied in ten pigs (+ two controls) with transection of the sigmoid colon. The authors describe a new surgical technique to reduce the prolapse of genitals and urinary organs. In retrospect, we studied 36 women--between the ages of 59 and 85--who had been hospitalized from 1988 through 1990 at the Ospedale di S. Intraspecies genotypic heterogeneity among Haemophilus ducreyi isolates was examined by using genomic fingerprints with rRNA from Escherichia coli as a probe. We have used molecular hybridization techniques to show that hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA from different individuals may have substantial differences in sequence homology. Seven specimens of HBV DNA were isolated from plasma of different blood donors. Samples were applied as dots to membranes and nick-translated to form probes. In 16 newborns with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) not artificially ventilated, oesophageal pressure was recorded with an electromanometer and the reactions to mechanical stimulation of the upper airways by means of a nylon fibre were investigated. Synovial fluids of 15 rheumatoid arthritis patients, 11 juvenile rheumatoid arthritis patients, and 6 patients with other chronic inflammatory joint diseases were studied. Surgical sutures are known to potentiate the development of wound infection. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the capability of bacteria to adhere to various types of sutures has a significant effect on their ability to cause infections. Bacterial adherence to sutures was quantitatively measured using radiolabeled bacteria. This work covers an experience of 174 patients operated for hypospadias over twelve and a half years (1962 through August, 1974). 10 conscious chronically prepared dogs were used.
