[Assessment of the efficacy of limitations and indications issued by the occupational physician regarding the health of the staff working in public transportation vehicles].

In this study we assessed the evidence of some specific, "ad hoc", medical indications for city bus, tram and subway professional drivers. As known, professional drivers have very little chances of modifying shift organization and many chronic degenerative diseases (low back pain, diabetes type 2, cardiovascular diseases, ecc.) are difficult to manage according to job planning. In our study we observed a positive association between introduction of specific shift, in particular when shift is divided in two-piece, on morning "turno spezzato 1(0)/1(0)" or one on morning and the second part on af

Toxicity and occupational health hazards of coal fly ash (CFA). A review of data and comparison to coal mine dust.

Coal fly ashes (CFA) are complex particles of a variable composition, which is mainly dependent on the combustion process, the source of coal and the precipitation technique. Toxic constituents in these particles are considered to be metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and silica. The purpose of this review was to study the in vitro and in vivo data on coal fly ash and relate the studied endpoints to the role of (crystalline) silica, considering its recent classification as a human carcinogen. For most of the effects coal mine dust was chosen as a reference, since it contains up to 10% of

Q fever: an issue in occupational health & safety? An overview of the methods of control and the effects of Coxiella burnetii on the human host.

Q Fever has proved to be a virulent infectious disease for a great many years. A number of epidemics have occurred among laboratory workers engaged in research on C burnetii but few fatalities have been recorded and the course of the disease is generally uncomplicated and benign (Braunwald et al, 1987). By following the recommendations of a large number of scientists, implementing and maintaining basic control measures, the risk of contamination will be kept at a minimum.

Spatial Discrepancies Between Health and Social Security Reports as Markers of Potential Underreporting of Occupational Injuries in Brazil, 2022-2023.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational injuries remain a major public health problem in Brazil, and underreporting limits the capacity of surveillance systems to support prevention and response. This study aimed to identify spatial discrepancies between health reports and social security reports of occupational injuries in Brazil. METHODS: This cross-sectional ecological study uses municipality-level aggregated data for all 5570 Brazilian municipalities. Occupational injury records from health reports (Sinan system) and social security reports (CAT system) were analysed for 2022 and 2023. Spatial distrib

Comparative analysis of alcohol consumption patterns and binge drinking behaviours among working populations: implications for occupational health and workplace safety.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption and binge drinking (BD) are major public health concerns with clear implications for occupational health and workplace safety, particularly in physically demanding or safety-sensitive jobs. However, differences in alcohol-related risk across occupational groups remain insufficiently explored. METHODS: This retrospective observational study analyzed medical records from 1264 workers who underwent routine occupational health surveillance in Palermo, Italy, between 2023 and 2025. Participants were classified as white-collar workers (Work 1; n = 607) or blue-collar…

Noise exposure, hearing loss and cognitive impairment: a cross-sectional study based on an occupational health surveillance cohort in China.

BACKGROUND: High-intensity noise is associated with noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). There is also evidence that noise exposure is related to cognitive impairment. This research aimed to analyze the associations and potential pathways of cumulative noise exposure (CNE), hearing loss and cognitive impairment. METHODS: A total of 560 research subjects were included in this research from May 2021 to April 2022 in western China. The demographic features, occupational features, and CNE were investigated and examined. Hearing loss was evaluated according to the National standard GB/T 7583-1987 of

Vaccination Offer during the Occupational Health Surveillance Program for Healthcare Workers and Suitability to Work: An Italian Retrospective Cohort Study.

The active immunization of health care workers (HCWs) is a crucial measure to avoid nosocomial infection; nevertheless, vaccine coverage (VC) among health personnel in Italy is unsatisfactory. To improve VC in the healthcare set, the Hygiene and Occupational Medicine departments of Bari Policlinico General University Hospital applied a specific program. The operative procedure demands that in the context of the occupational medical examination, all workers are evaluated for susceptibility to vaccine-preventable diseases (VDPs), with immunization prophylaxis offered to those determined to be su

Triangulating the New Frontier of Health Geo-Data: Assessing Tick-Borne Disease Risk as an Occupational Hazard among Vulnerable Populations.

Determining interventions to combat disease often requires complex analyses of spatial-temporal data to improve health outcomes. For some vulnerable populations, obtaining sufficient data for related analyses is especially difficult, thus exacerbating related healthcare, research, and public health efforts. In the United States (U.S.), migrant and seasonal workers are especially affected in this regard, with data on health interventions and outcomes largely absent from official sources. In response, this study offers a multi-modal approach that involves triangulating geographically specified h

Exploring associations between early substance use and longitudinal socio-occupational functioning in young people engaged in a mental health service.

Neuropsychiatric disorders (including substance misuse) are associated with the greatest burden of functional disability in young people, and contributory factors remain poorly understood. Early-onset substance use is one candidate risk factor which may inform functional prognosis and facilitate direction of interventions aiming to curtail impairment. Accordingly, we modelled associations between early-onset use of alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and amphetamine-type stimulants (ATSs) and longitudinal socio-occupational functioning (indexed by the Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scal

Malignant mesothelioma due to non-occupational asbestos exposure from the Italian national surveillance system (ReNaM): epidemiology and public health issues.

INTRODUCTION: Italy produced and imported a large amount of raw asbestos, up to the ban in 1992, with a peak in the period between 1976 and 1980 at about 160,000 tons/year. The National Register of Mesotheliomas (ReNaM, "Registro Nazionale dei Mesoteliomi" in Italian), a surveillance system of mesothelioma incidence, has been active since 2002, operating through a regional structure. METHODS: The Operating Regional Center (COR) actively researches cases and defines asbestos exposure on the basis of national guidelines. Diagnostic, demographic and exposure characteristics of non-occupationally
