BACKGROUND AND PURPOSES: Anti-aquaporin 4 antibodies are specific markers for Devic's disease. This study aimed to test if this high specificity holds in the context of a large spectrum of systemic autoimmune and non-autoimmune diseases.
METHODS: Anti-aquaporin-4 antibodies (NMO-IgG) were determined by indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) on mouse cerebellum in 673 samples, as follows: group I (clinically defined Devic's disease, n=47); group II [inflammatory/demyelinating central nervous system (CNS) diseases, n=41]; group III (systemic and organ-specific autoimmune diseases, n=250); group IV (

Devic's disease or neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an autoimmune, inflammatory and demyelinating pathology of the central nervous system that affects the optic nerve and the spinal cord. Diagnosis confirmed by imaging, magnetic resonance (MR) and the presence of the anti-aquaporin 4 antibody (anti-AQP4). We describe two cases of patients with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) and Devic's disease, who had anti-AQP4 positive and areas with neuroaxis MR abnormalities, showing this rare association.

Electrical manipulation of magnetic domain wall motion and its applications constitute a long-standing central topic of spintronics. Recent enthusiasm for magnetically tunable diffractive optics calls for a fast and efficient method of device reconfiguration. Here we develop a chiral domain-wall racetrack grating device whose periodic magnetization structures can be electrically reconfigured by spin-orbit torques without the assistance of external magnetic fields, demonstrating a fast, efficient, and continuous tuning of optical diffraction. We further show that these unique features can be ut

PURPOSE: The relentless rise in antimicrobial resistance is a major societal challenge and requires, as part of its solution, a better understanding of bacterial colonization and infection. To facilitate this, we developed a highly efficient no-wash red optical molecular imaging agent that enables the rapid, selective, and specific visualization of Gram-positive bacteria through a bespoke optical fiber-based delivery/imaging endoscopic device.
METHODS: We rationally designed a no-wash, red, Gram-positive-specific molecular imaging agent (Merocy-Van) based on vancomycin and an environmental me

An optical impedance spectroscopy (OIS) technique based on a single-mode electro-active-integrated optical waveguide (EA-IOW) was developed to investigate electron-transfer processes of redox adsorbates. A highly sensitive single-mode EA-IOW device was used to optically follow the time-dependent faradaic current originated from a submonolayer of cytochrome c undergoing redox exchanges driven by a harmonic modulation of the electric potential at several dc bias potentials and at several frequencies. To properly retrieve the faradaic current density from the ac-modulated optical signal, we intro

A solid-core microstructured optical fiber is infiltrated with the Dispersed Yellow 7 and chloroform mixture solution, resulting in the appearance of several transmission dips with different temperature and axial load responses. The temperature- and load-dependent spectral characteristics of these dips have been investigated and the experimental results indicate that they are pretty temperature-sensitive, but insensitive to the variation of applied axial load. Such a compact fiber-optic device with electric perturbation immunity could be employed for load-insensitive temperature sensing with h

We discuss a forgotten report by the famous British neuroanatomist, neuropathologist and neurologist Jacob Augustus Lockhart Clarke (1817-1880) about a 17-year-old girl with bilateral optic neuritis and longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis. This report, which appeared in 1865, i.e. 15 years prior to Wilhelm Erb's much-cited paper on the coincidence of optic neuritis and acute myelitis, represents the first known account of a case of Devic's syndrome or neuromyelitis optica in the English-language medical literature.

Optical gas imaging (OGI) is an effective tool for detecting gas leaks from process equipment. Despite the fact that OGI has been used for leak detection for over a decade, its detection limit is an elusive performance metric and has not been systematically characterized and quantified like other detection instruments. A substantial body of research has been performed that has shed some light on the OGI detection limits and the factors that dictate the detection limits. The OGI detection limit expressed as ppm-m and ppm now can be quantified as a function of ΔT (differential temperature betwee

In this work, we propose an eye-shaped microring resonator (E-SMRR)-based photonic biosensor on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate. The device is modeled using variational finite-difference time-domain (Var FDTD) simulations. Furthermore, the Mason's gain rule is employed to analytically determine the optical transfer function for the drop port of the E-SMRR system. The proposed E-SMRR biosensor offers a bulk sensitivity of 460.829 nm/RIU, an FSR of 27.535 nm, a quality factor of 1070.677, and a figure of merit equal to 341.308. Additionally, the device has been evaluated for its ability t

Transmission of high-speed optical data over fiber is inherently limited by optical attenuation and chromatic dispersion, with dispersion impairments becoming increasingly critical as data rates scale and symbol durations shorten. One of the practical solutions is to utilize an integrated photonic device that produces dispersion with the same magnitude but opposite sign, so that net zero aggregate dispersion is achieved in the link. In this work, we demonstrate dispersion compensation of 30 Gb/s NRZ data using an integrated silicon nitride (SiN) grating-based device. The SiN Bragg grating oper

Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) for on-chip interconnect, as a degree of freedom to enable further scaling the communication capacity, has attracted wide attention. However, selective loading information to the multimode light carriers of MDM systems is not as simple as the situation in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). In this paper, we demonstrate a scalable mode-selective modulation device for on-chip optical interconnect. It consists of two functional blocks. In one block, we use carrier-depletion add-drop silicon microring resonators to implement the simultaneous mode de-multiplexi

The purpose of this work was to develop a compact surface wave elastography (CSWE) device for measuring finger's skin stiffness. The motivation was to develop a noninvasive technique for assessing limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (lcSSc) in accordance with new ACR/EULAR clarification criteria. Currently, the Modified Rodnan Skin Score (MRSS) is widely used for assessing systemic sclerosis but is challenging for assessing patients with lcSSc. The novelty of CSWE is to develop a noninvasive technique to measure the elastic properties of skin of fingers. In the CSWE device, a local harmonic v

Implantation of a cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) device in patients with congenital heart disease may be challenging because of the particular underlying anatomy. We present the case of a right-sided transvenous implantation of a dual-chamber CRT-D device in a patient with situs inversus totalis and mirror image dextrocardia. To facilitate our anatomic orientation and to overcome unusual hand-eye coordination problems, we decided to flip the fluoroscopic image projection by 180° (right-left), creating the optical impression of a "normalized" heart position (levocardia). We present a novel device that allows the user to measure the Young Modulus of a material at the opening of a 5 mm diameter needle. The device relies on a miniaturized cantilever spring mounted at the end of the needle and interrogated via Fabry-Pérot optical fiber interferometry. The probe is repetitively brought in and out of contact with the sample at the end of the needle by means of a steel cable that is controlled via a piezoelectric actuator located at the proximal end. We demonstrate the ability of our device to detect and quantify layers of varying stiffness during needle insertion in

Two-dimensional perovskites have emerged as promising materials for optoelectronic applications owing to their excellent environmental stability and tunable quantum confinement. Such 2D perovskites can incorporate a particularly versatile range of organic cations of different size, chemical nature, and optoelectronic character. However, understanding and controlling thin-film transport for this vast family of materials remains a key challenge to their successful application in devices. Here, we systematically investigate odd-even effects in thin films of Ruddlesden-Popper-type (RP) lead-iodide

Visual disability remains a major global public health challenge, particularly among individuals with irreversible ocular diseases where medical or surgical treatment cannot restore functional vision. Low-vision rehabilitation (LVR), including the prescription of low-vision aids (LVAs), plays a critical role in optimizing residual vision and improving quality of life; however, patterns of visual disability and LVA utilization vary widely across populations and healthcare settings. This systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines to evaluate patterns of visual disa

BACKGROUND: High-speed handheld drills are preferred for skull base bony decompressions despite potential risks to neurovascular structures posed by rotating shafts. Although ultrasonic bone curettes vibrate rather than rotate, previous work suggests they produce more heat than drills. The effect of room-temperature manual irrigation has not been studied. The authors examined the local thermal effects of a traditional high-speed drill and ultrasonic bone curette during optic nerve decompression.
METHODS: Optic canals were exposed bilaterally in five cadaveric specimens. Temperature probes wer
