Managing the right tension.

Of all the competing objectives every company faces, three pairs stand out: profitability versus growth, the short term versus the long term, and the whole organization versus the units. In each case, progress on one front usually comes at the expense of progress on the other. The authors researched the performance of more than 1000 companies worldwide over the past two decades and found that most struggle to succeed across the three tensions. From 1983 to 2003, for example, only 32% of these companies more often than not achieved positive profitability and revenue growth at the same time. The

The Organization and Operation of Inferior Temporal Cortex.

Inferior temporal cortex (IT) is a key part of the ventral visual pathway implicated in object, face, and scene perception. But how does IT work? Here, I describe an organizational scheme that marries form and function and provides a framework for future research. The scheme consists of a series of stages arranged along the posterior-anterior axis of IT, defined by anatomical connections and functional responses. Each stage comprises a complement of subregions that have a systematic spatial relationship. The organization of each stage is governed by an eccentricity template, and corresponding

Occupational safety and health risks among plumbers: A qualitative study of workplace hazards, safety practices, and system-level gaps in Texas.

BACKGROUND: The plumbing trade exposes workers to ongoing workplace hazards that pose significant health risks. This issue is well known but remains unresolved. A key question remains: why have current safety measures, such as training programs, regulatory standards, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, failed to reduce injury rates or significantly improve safety in the plumbing field. OBJECTIVES: Despite well-documented hazards in plumbing work, qualitative research examining why existing safety measures continue to fail plumbers-particularly in trade-specific U.S. contexts

Establishing expert consensus on essential perioperative management components for hip fracture patients aged over 75: a national modified Delphi study.

INTRODUCTION: Anesthesiologists play a central role in optimizing perioperative care and improving outcomes for patients with hip fractures (HF). Standardized care bundles are essential to guide clinicians, enhance expertise, and improve overall quality of care. We conducted a nationwide modified Delphi study to establish French expert consensus on key components of a standardized care bundle for patients over 75 years old with HF. METHODS: A two-round modified Delphi process was conducted with 30 multidisciplinary experts representative of major French academic societies to assess consensus

Perception of clinical management in the child and adolescent population with acute mental health conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Child and Adolescent Day Hospitals stabilize acute mental health conditions through intensive and interdisciplinary interventions. In Chile, there are 12 such facilities, with a shortfall of 73, amid exponential demand growth. This issue coexists with a lack of information and knowledge regarding the care and management provided in these centers. The problem is grounded in Patricia Benner's theory and E. Morin's theory of "complex thinking." OBJECTIVE: To reveal the clinical management of children and adolescents enrolled in Child and Adolescent Day Hospitals with severe mental

A Multidisciplinary ICU Clerkship Curriculum Incorporating Simulation and Competency-Based Education: Design, Implementation, and Early Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Critical care competencies are increasingly relevant across specialties, yet structured exposure in undergraduate medical education (UME) remains variable. We describe the design, implementation, and early outcomes of a four-week, modular ICU clerkship. METHODS: We implemented a multidisciplinary ICU clerkship integrating clinical immersion, protected weekly didactics, asynchronous learning, high-fidelity simulation, health equity rounds, and palliative care debriefing. Objectives were aligned with Delphi-derived undergraduate critical care competencies and AAMC Entrustable Prof

Supporting Families During End-of-Life Care in Intensive Care Units: A Qualitative Descriptive Study of Nurses' Experiences in Saudi Arabia.

Background/Objectives: Supporting families during end-of-life care in intensive care units is clinically, emotionally, and ethically demanding, and nurses' experiences of this work in Saudi Arabian intensive care settings remain underexplored. This study explored nurses' experiences of providing psychosocial and emotional support to families during end-of-life care, including their role in treatment-limitation and goals-of-care discussions. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study, analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis from a contextualist position, was conducted with 15 intensive care nu

Professional Recognition, Reality Shock and Nurses' Well-Being After the Bologna Reform in Spain: A Qualitative Study of Key Informants' Perspectives.

Background/Objectives: The Bologna Process and the European Higher Education Area consolidated the transition of nursing education in Spain from diploma-level training to a university degree framework. Although previous research has examined newly graduated nurses' transition to practice, less attention has been paid to how key informants involved in educational reform interpret its long-term professional implications, including their potential relevance for nurses' well-being. This study explored key informants' perspectives on the implications of the Bologna Process and the Nursing White Pap
