Osteomyelitis of the fibula is rare and is especially rare in children. The published literature is limited to case series and is thus lacking a comprehensive description of the disease. The purpose of this systematic review is to provide the first comprehensive summary of the demographics, presenting symptoms, laboratory values, microbiology, and treatment results of osteomyelitis of the fibula in children based on the existing literature. This institutional review board (IRB)-exempt systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocol (PR…

BACKGROUND: Dental procedures can lead to bacteremia and have been considered a potential risk factor for pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis (PVO). However, data on the association between dental procedures and PVO are limited.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) After controlling for relevant confounding variables, are dental procedures associated with an increased risk of PVO? (2) Does antibiotic prophylaxis before dental procedures effectively decrease the risk of PVO?
METHODS: A case-crossover study was conducted to investigate the association between dental procedures and PVO using a Japanese claims …

Cryptococcosis is a worldwide-distributed fungal disease affecting humans and animals and is considered the most common systemic mycosis in cats. Classically, the clinical presentation of cryptococcal infection in cats consists of solitary or multiple nodules located on the planum nasale or the bridge of the nose. Bone involvement as cryptococcal osteomyelitis is a rare clinical entity of cryptococcosis. Herein, this case report describes a domestic shorthair cat with osteomyelitis of the mandibular bone resulting from Cryptococcus spp. infection. During the physical examination, a subcutaneou…

A review of the literature regarding the evaluation and management of osteomyelitis and discussion on clinical, radiographic, laboratory, and pathologic findings with both acute and chronic cases is presented. Cases illustrate the complexities that can typically present at an academic setting, which often require a stepwise approach and interdisciplinary collaboration. Surgical pearls and ancillary treatment of osteomyelitis highlight the technical challenges and surgeons' preferences.

The authors present the case of a patient seen for back pain in the emergency department, initially discharged home with a diagnosis of musculoskeletal pain. He returned a week later and was found to have vertebral osteomyelitis based on a thorough neurologic exam. A review of ominous causes of back pain, including the elusive nature of vertebral osteomyelitis/diskitis is discussed.

Osteomyelitis (OM), a devastating disease caused by microbial infection of bones, remains a major challenge for orthopedic surgeons. Conventional approaches for prevention and treatment of OM are unsatisfactory. Various alternative strategies have been proposed, among which, hydrogel-based strategies have demonstrated potential due to their unique properties, including loadable, implantable, injectable, printable, degradable, and responsive to stimuli. Several protocols, including different hydrogel designs, selection of antimicrobial agent, co-administration of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (B…

Sclerosing osteomyelitis of Garré is a rare and very specific type of chronic osteomyelitis that mainly affects children and young adults. To date, there is no clear etiology for the disease. Clinical findings and laboratory results are usually unremarkable with commonly negative blood and tissue cultures. Cortical thickening and periosteal reaction are common radiological findings. Biopsy often shows chronic non-specific inflammatory changes. It is a well-described entity in the dental literature, but to the best of our knowledge, there are no distinctive diagnostic criteria for long bones. W…

Osteomyelitis is an infection of the bone tissue and bone marrow which is becoming increasingly difficult to treat due to the infection causing pathogens associated. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the main bacteria that causes this infection, which has a broad spectrum of antibiotic resistance making it extremely difficult to treat. Conventional metal implants used in orthopedic applications often have the drawback of implant induced osteomyelitis as well as the requirement of a second surgery to remove the implant once it is no longer required. Recently, attention has been focused on the des…

Multiple myeloma is a hematological malignancy affecting the plasma cells. It is the second most common hematologic cancer in adults. Over 90% of patients develop local osteolytic lesions and skeletal-related events at some point during the progression of the disease. Bone lesions can induce severe pain and immobility and can also increase the risk of fractures and osteomyelitis. Skeletal complications are associated with poor clinical outcomes, affecting quality of life and mortality. Current standards of care for myeloma, e.g., autologous stem-cell transplantation (ASCT) and chemotherapy, do…

PURPOSE: Osteomyelitis of the orbital bones presenting as an orbital cellulitis is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB). We report a rare case of tubercular osteomyelitis of the orbital bones presenting as a periorbital cellulitis.
CASE REPORT: A seven-year-old female child presented to our tertiary eye care center with swelling involving the right eyelids and the right cheek for two months. She had been provisionally diagnosed elsewhere as pre-septal cellulitis and had been given oral antibiotics. We clinically diagnosed her as orbital cellulitis, but her non-responsiveness to int…

Infection of bone tissue, or osteomyelitis, has become a growing concern in modern healthcare due in no small part to a rise in antibiotic resistance among bacteria, notably Staphylococcus aureus. The current standard of care involves aggressive, prolonged antibiotic therapy combined with surgical debridement of infected tissues. While this treatment may be sufficient for resolving a portion of cases, recurrences of the infection and associated risks including toxicity with long-term antibiotic usage have been reported. Therefore, there exists a need to produce safer, more efficacious options …

Lemierre's syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and is caused by gram-negative anaerobes, primarily Fusobacterium necrophorum. We report a case of a 20-year-old man who developed chronic osteomyelitis of the femur and myonecrosis of thigh muscles secondary to this syndrome. The diagnosis was made based on clinical presentation and evidence of thrombosis in the internal jugular vein on ultrasound. The patient was initially treated with antibiotics, and anticoagulants were added later due to deep vein thrombosis in the lower limb.

Leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV), also known as small-vessel cutaneous vasculitis, is rarely seen in the setting of staphylococcal infection without bacteremia. Here, we present a case of LCV in a 61-year-old male with chronic staphylococcal osteomyelitis without any evidence of bacteremia. The rash resolved with the treatment of osteomyelitis. As seen in this case, local infection should be considered in the differential diagnosis of LCV even when there is no evidence of bacteremia.

In the case of a cat bite patient, even if the external wound is small, prophylactic antibiotics should be used early and a closed observation is needed. If symptoms persist, deep infection should be considered.

Post-traumatic osteomyelitis is one of the most common disorders of bone infection, which is secondary to open fracture caused by machinery injury, traffic accident, and it is also the main manifestation in the postoperative infection of open fracture. After trauma, bacteria invade bone tissue and reproduce rapidly in large quantities, which easily leads to osteomyelitis. Patients are often complaint of pain at the affected limb, loss of function, or even amputation due to deteriorated infection, resulting in loss of labor capability and poor quality of life. Because the diagnosis and treatmen…

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic foot osteomyelitis (DFO) is a dreaded complication as both diagnosis and treatment of the condition is laborious. However, for proper decision on antibiotics in medical management of DFO, accurate determination of microbes is necessary to narrow the spectrum of coverage and to reduce adverse effects of long-term administration of antibiotics. With differing pattern of use of antimicrobials and their resistance pattern in different countries, it is empirical to determine the microbiological characteristics of bone cultures in DFO from a referral institute in South India.

INTRODUCTION: Garre's sclerosing osteomyelitis (GSO) is a rare chronic inflammatory disease resulting in thickening of cortices with loss of medullary canal without any signs of active infection.
CASE REPORT: A 13-year-old boy presented in 2017 with the right thigh pain of 3 years duration, who had exhausted all conservative attempts. We operated the patient with intramedullary reaming with antibiotic-impregnated cement augmented Kuntscher nail, which got jammed. The nail was subsequently removed and left-over cement pieces required an extended trochanteric osteotomy with aggressive curettage…
