BACKGROUND: Osteopathia striata with cranial sclerosis (OS-CS) is a rare bone dysplasia that presents with variable symptoms mainly due to the associated CS.
METHODS: The otorhinolaryngologic clinical presentation and temporal bone computed tomography (CT) findings of a new case of OS-CS are presented. Differential diagnosis is also discussed.
RESULTS: Our study confirms the typical appearance of the temporal bone reported in previous CT studies and the utility of CT for evaluating the various etiologies of conductive-mixed hearing loss present in OS-CS. Radiographs of the femur and pelvis r

This is a presentation of a rare malignant tumor that uncommonly affects the bones of the foot. The following case involves a malignancy which usually presents during childhood or adolescence presenting much later in life. Physicians treating the foot and ankle must include osteosarcoma in their list of differential diagnoses to exclude when vague symptoms involving deep pain and edema present. It is critical to prevent misdiagnosis and delayed treatment with this form of tumor.

Acquired osteosclerosis is a rare disorder of bone formation but an important consideration in adults with sclerotic bones or elevated bone density results. In such patients, malignancy, hepatitis C, and fluorosis should all be considered when making a diagnosis. We describe 4 patients evaluated at our Metabolic Bone Disease Clinic from May 1, 1997, to July 1, 2006, whose bone disorders resulted from chronic fluoride exposure due to excessive tea intake. Three of these patients had toxic serum fluoride levels (> 15 micromol/L). Although the clinical presentation of the patients varied, all 4 h…

STUDY DESIGN: A case of idiopathic focal vertebral body osteonecrosis without vertebral collapse is reported.
OBJECTIVES: To report a rare case of focal vertebral osteonecrosis and to clarify the features of imaging studies.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There are no previous reports describing focal vertebral body necrosis without collapse in the literature.
METHODS: A case report and literature review are presented.
RESULTS: Imaging studies demonstrated: 1) sclerotic change on computed tomography scan; 2) low intensity on T1, high intensity on T2 with clear margin, and no gadolinium enhanc

Although no specific radiographic appearance has emerged to date for the epithelioid subtype of hemangioma, these lesions most typically exhibit well-defined osteolysis. Other relatively common features include surrounding sclerosis, cortical expansion and cortical destruction. We present a case of epithelioid hemangioma of the spine with an unusual radiological appearance which to our knowledge has not previously been reported: diffuse sclerosis of the involved vertebral body. The diffuse sclerosis seen in this case resembles the osteosclerotic process seen not only in benign entities such as

The cases of 14 adult females with swelling, tenderness, and sclerosis of the inferomedial part of the clavicle are presented. They were seen during a 16-year period, suggesting that the condition is rare. In ten patients strain at the sternoclavicular joint seemed to be an etiological factor. Eleven patients were followed for periods of 1-13 years (mean 5 years). The clavicular sclerosis regressed and they all developed signs of osteoarthrosis. Based upon available biopsy results and review of reported cases, it is hypothesized that the radiographic changes are due to osteonecrosis of the med

Evolution of fibro-osteosclerotic bone marrow lesions in the course of primary (idiopathic) osteomyelofibrosis (OMF) was studied in 36 patie … ferent lengths of intervals between the first and the last biopsy and degree of fibrosis as well as osteosclerosis, suggested that alterations developed progressively, however, at an unpredictable and considerably varying rate. Thus our findings were not in keeping with several studies on smaller series of patients, which generally contested a progression of fib …

Erdheim-Chester disease is characterised by diffuse metaphyseal and diaphyseal sclerosis of long tubular bones of the appendicular skeleton. In addition, there is an inconstant tendency to visceral involvement by lipo-granulomatous infiltration. Histologically, this condition has marked similarities to Hand-Schuller-Christian disease. A further case is presented which supports the view that Erdheim-Chester disease is part of the spectrum of histiocytoses and not a distinct pathological entity. Polyostotic sclerosing histiocytosis would be an appropriate alternative label for this condition.

The fluorosis in fluor-exposed workers has been known already since nearly 50 years. It is characterized by a massive regeneration of bones. The fluorosis is only rarely observed as a sequel of the sodium fluoride therapy of osteoporosis. Out of the number of our own patients a medicamentously induced fluorosis after a 12-year sodium fluoride therapy of a steroid osteoporosis is described. The pathological value of this iatrogenic fluorosis is relatively insignificant. Nevertheless, due to the picture of complaints resulting from this a sodium fluoride therapy should be controlled. In this cas

Osteopetrosis, a metabolic bone disease characterized by a generalized sclerosis of the skeleton, is inherited as an autosomal recessive in a number of mammalian species. The pathogenesis of congenital osteopetrosis is mediated by a reduction in bone resorption as a result of decreased osteoclast function. This hypothesis is based on both functional and structural evidence of reduced bone resorption in all mutations examined to date. The present study examined the histology of cartilage and bone, the ultrastructure of osteoclasts, and the morphology of mineralized bone surfaces in a lethal ost

Anatomico-pathological and radiological studies of osteopoikilosis were performed in two cases, one involving a femoral head, excised after a fracture of a femoral neck, in an elderly man and the other following biopsy of an iliac crest in a young woman. In both patients wide-spread radiological evidence of the disorder was present as an incidental finding. The radiological appearance of rounded and linear densities corresponded to old and inactive remodelling of spongy trabeculae in epiphyseal and metaphyseal locations. The distribution and appearance of these osteopoikilotic densities sugges

A patient with a severe remote-effect polyneuropathy and other paraneoplastic features of osteosclerotic myeloma improved dramatically with melphalan and prednisone treatment. Serial electrodiagnostic studies provided an objective means of following the response to therapy and documented the improvement. We believe this represents the first reported patient with multifocal osteosclerotic myeloma and a myelomatous polyneuropathy responding to melphalan and prednisone.

In reviewing the radiographs of 102 patients with known sickle cell anemia, a 7% incidence (seven patients) of severe long-bone sclerosis was found. Of the affected patients 50% had homozygous sickle cell (SS) disease and 50% had sickle cell-hemoglobin C (SC) or S-thalassemia disease. No distinguishing radiographic features were found between these two groups. Those patients with SS disease and long-bone sclerosis were younger, had lower hemoglobin levels, and many more hospital admissions than those with SC or S-thalassemia disease and long-bone sclerosis. A review of the medical charts of th

Sclerosing bone dysplasias are a group of unusual disorders with important and frequently lethal complications. During the past 8 years more than 80 patients with disorders of this type have been investigated in the Department of Human Genetics, University of Cape Town. It has emerged that a condition in this category 'sclerosteosis', has a high prevalence in individuals of Afrikaner stock and more than 40 affected patients have been studied. Other conditions which have been investigated during this survey include various types of osteopetrosis, pycnodysostosis and craniometaphyseal dysplasia.

We encountered a case of systemic mast cell disease associated with rheumatoid factor; to our knowledge, this has not been reported in the literature. Rheumatoid arthritis as an unrelated second disease cannot be excluded, but there is support for a relation between joint symptoms, rheumatoid factor, and the mast cell disease.
