Impact of basic fibroblast growth factor on healing of tympanic membrane perforations due to direct penetrating trauma: a prospective non-blinded/controlled study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of direct application of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) on healing of tympanic membrane perforations due to direct traumatic penetration through the external auditory canal. DESIGN: A prospective non-blinded controlled study. SETTING: University-affiliated teaching hospital. PARTICIPANTS: In total, 104 patients with small [<25%] penetrating perforations were recruited. They were alternatively allocated to two groups: Control (spontaneous healing, n = 51) and FGF treatment (direct application of bFGF drops in the clinic and repeated daily by the pa

Endaural access to remove the projectile from a firearm.

BACKGROUND: Surgical approaches to temporomandibular region have been the subject of numerous controversies in the literature. Pre-auricular approaches have been used with the observance of high success rate, and during surgery history, various modifications of this approach were conducted in order to reduce irreversible sequelae. Thus, given the relevance of the study, this article proposes to alert the professionals that carry out these surgical approaches in relation to the anatomical structures involved and to describe and emphasise the benefits of endaural approach. CASE REPORT: A Caucas

Sensorineural hearing loss in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to discuss the association between sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). METHODS: We reviewed cases of patients with known IBD seen in an otolaryngology practice with documentation of all otologic data including age of onset, family history of otologic problems, exposure to noise, audiometric findings, and so on. RESULTS: Of 38 patients with a history of IBD, 22 had documented SNHL. Nineteen of these had no other identifiable etiology for their inner ear dysfunction. Fourteen of these patients had a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis

Effect of the status after ear surgery and ear pathology on the results of infrared tympanic thermometry.

Most publications that deal with infrared tympanic thermometry (ITT) have performed a comparison between the established temperature measurements and ITT. However, to date an understanding of the influence of pathological ear findings on ITT test results is incomplete. Therefore, in the present study ITT was performed in healthy adults (n =21), adult patients with monaural central perforation (n =31) or strong scar formations (n =24) of the tympanic membrane and 18 adult patients after monaural canal wall down surgery. Right and left ear and oral temperature were measured three times by one in

A case of carcinoid tumor of the middle ear.

We report here a case of a carcinoid tumor observed in the middle ear (ME), which was initially diagnosed as ME adenoma. The patient was a 64-year-old woman who was first seen in our hospital in March 2001 for a 7-month hearing loss. On otoscopic examination, a whitish mass could be observed through the intact tympanic membrane. High-resolution computed tomography demonstrated a tumor-like lesion in the ME with no evidence of bone destruction. A myringotomy and biopsy were performed and an initial diagnosis of ME adenoma was made. Light microscopy showed fragments of cellular tissue in which b

Utility of the tympanic membrane temperature probe for continuous core temperature monitoring during general anesthesia: in vitro laboratory validation and prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Continuous tympanic membrane temperature (T-TM) monitoring is minimally invasive and may be suitable for core temperature measur … alysis of variance. Hypothermia was defined as core temperature < 36.0°C. Safety was assessed using otoscopy before and after anesthesia. RESULTS: In vitro, T-TM and T-ESO showed minimal mean bias (-0.01°C; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.03 to 0.00°C), with limits of agreement (LoA) ranging from -0.22 to 0.20°C. Clinically, T-TM was comparable to T-IRT …

Intraoperative Management of Lateral Semicircular Canal Fistula in Cholesteatoma Surgery: Retrospective Case Series and Audiovestibular Follow-Up.

Background and Objectives: To evaluate the surgical management and outcomes of lateral semicircular canal fistulas (LSCFs) in patients with middle ear cholesteatoma, focusing on hearing preservation and vestibular function. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on nine adult patients diagnosed with LSCFs secondary to cholesteatoma who underwent surgery at a tertiary referral center between 2018 and 2024. The preoperative evaluation included otoscopy, audiometry, vestibular testing (HINTS), and high-resolution CT (HRCT) of the temporal bone. Surgical techniques included can…

Mastoid obliteration with hydroxyapatite vs. bone pâté in mastoidectomy surgery performed on patients with cholesteatoma and chronic suppurative otitis media: a retrospective analysis.

PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy and safety of hydroxyapatite vs. bone pâté as obliteration material in mastoidectomy surgery for patients with chronic suppurative otitis media and cholesteatoma. METHODS: This is a retrospective, multi-center, cohort study. All patients were followed up with micro-otoscopy, audiometry, and, if indicated, MRI with diffusion-weighted imaging. The following outcome parameters were analyzed: procedure safety (wound infections and complications), cholesteatoma recidivism rates (residual/recurrent), control of infection (Merchant's scale), and hearing results (pure…
