Analysis of the Risk of Neoplasm and Malignancy of Salivary Gland Neoplasm of Uncertain Malignant Potential (SUMP): From the Perspective of Cytomorphological Subgroups.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the risk of neoplasm (RON) and the risk of malignancy (ROM) in cases diagnosed as salivary gland neoplasm of uncertain malignant potential (SUMP), with subclassification based on cytomorphologic features. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on salivary gland fine-needle aspiration (FNA) specimens diagnosed as SUMP between 2018 and 2022 in a tertiary care setting. Each case was re-evaluated by two pathologists and subclassified into basaloid, oncocytic, or clear cell/other categories according to the dominant cytomorphologic pattern. RON an

Extranodal marginal-zone B-cell lymphoma of the salivary gland.

Primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the salivary gland is an uncommon tumor that most often occurs in the parotid gland. The most common subtype is marginal-zone B-cell lymphoma, extranodal, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue type. This subtype has recently been included in the Revised European-American Classification of Lymphoid Neoplasms, as well as in the upcoming World Health Organization classification of hematopoietic and lymphoid neoplasms. This low-grade lymphoma usually arises in a background of benign lymphoepithelial lesion or myoepithelial sialadenitis that is associated with the auto

Late-onset distant metastasis in parotid gland myoepithelial carcinoma.

Myoepithelial carcinoma (MC) is a rare salivary gland malignancy that usually affects people over the age of 50. The incidence is similar in both men and women. MC might develop de novo or within a pre-existing benign myoepithelioma or pleomorphic adenoma. Reports on MC clinical behaviour differ. Here, we present the case of a female patient in her 60s who had surgery for parotid gland MC. Seven years after parotidectomy, a distant metastasis was found in the sixth left rib, and she underwent a metastasectomy. Nine years after the initial surgery, another distant metastasis was detected in the

A presentation of basal cell adenoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: While statistically rare in comparison to other head and neck tumours, parotid gland swellings are often encountered in clinical practice where one of the primary goals of examination becomes distinction between benign and malignant lesions. Hallmarks of malignancy are characterized by a female preponderance, history of radiation exposure, a positive family history, and clinical features like heterogenous consistency, fixity to skin/underlying tissues and involvement of facial nerve. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present a case of parotid swelling in a 72-year old gentleman from sout

Comparing Travel Distance to Care and Staging of Parotid Gland Malignancies in South Dakota and Surrounding States.

BACKGROUND: Parotid gland malignancies are difficult to characterize in terms of incidence and risk factors due to their relatively rare occurrence. Common cancers often present more aggressively in rural areas, albeit occurring less frequently. Some previous studies have found increased distance to care has been linked to more advanced malignancies. This study hypothesized decreased access to parotid gland malignancy specialists (otolaryngologists or dermatologists), evaluated as longer travel distances, would be associated with more advanced staging of parotid gland malignancies. METHODS: A

High Rates of Ultraviolet-Signature Mutations in Squamous Cell Carcinomas of the Parotid Gland and Prognostic Implications.

In the absence of clear pathologic differences, clinical history may differentiate potential primary parotid squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) from metastases. The presence of an ultraviolet (UV) signature can distinguish between tumors of cutaneous and non-cutaneous origin. This study aimed to investigate rates of UV signature mutations in squamous cell carcinomas of the parotid gland as well as differences in clinical features between tumors of cutaneous and non-cutaneous origin. Clinical and pathologic data were collected from 71 patients with SCC involving the parotid gland, of which 48 had c

Contemporary management of benign parotid tumours - the increasing evidence for extracapsular dissection.

Benign parotid tumours have historically often been managed surgically by superficial parotidectomy. While this approach usually gives a generous cuff of surrounding normal parotid tissue to increase tumour margins, it requires a much larger incision than the increasingly used extracapsular dissection (ECD) technique. Furthermore, superficial parotidectomy can result in marked facial hollowing, Frey syndrome and an increased risk of both temporary and permanent facial nerve weakness. ECD has been popularised as a safe alternative to parotidectomy primarily for the removal of mobile, benign par

Study of salivary gland lesions with fine needle aspiration cytology and histopothology along with immunohistochemistry.

Salivary gland swelling is a common and important problem. Acute and chronic sialadenitis, different benign and malignant neoplasms are the common causes which present with salivary gland swelling. Imaging technique is not so helpful in pre-operative diagnosis; microscopical examination is required for diagnosis. Pre-operative core needle biopsy is hazardous and may damage facial nerve, lead to fistula formation or associated with tumour seeding. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is however virtually risk-free. The study was done to assess the utility of FNAC and its accuracy and pitfalls

[Otorhinolaryngological symptoms of tumors of the pharyngeal process of the parotid saliva (clinical case with literature review)].

The parotid gland is the largest salivary gland. Tumors of the salivary gland account for 5% in the structure of oncological morbidity, and up to 80% of tumors affect the large salivary glands with tumor localization in 20% of cases in the pharyngeal process of the parotid salivary gland. The main clinical sign of a tumor of the parotid salivary gland is the presence of a slowly growing mass in the area of the gland. Often, underestimation of the clinical symptoms of salivary gland tumors is the reason for the late diagnosis of this disease and the initial manifestations of the process remain

Coexistence of Lung Cancer and Warthin Tumour in a Smoker: Importance of Accurate Interpretation of 18F-FDG-Avid Parotid Lesions.

Warthin tumour is a benign salivary gland neoplasm strongly associated with smoking and known for avid 18F-FDG uptake. We report a 53-year-old male chronic smoker presenting with tinnitus and ear pain. A resected brain mass demonstrated metastatic carcinoma (TTF-1 positive, CK7 diffuse). 18F-FDG PET/CT revealed a moderately 18F-FDG -avid left upper lobe pulmonary nodule and a small 18F-FDG -avid intraparotid lesion. Given the smoking history and imaging characteristics, Warthin tumour was favoured over metastasis. Lung biopsy confirmed moderately to poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma; paroti

Pleomorphic Adenoma in an Immunocompromised Patient.

Salivary gland tumors are known for its rarity and almost 30%-40% occur in the minor salivary glands, out of which, pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is rated to be the most common benign salivary gland neoplasm. This term was first termed by Willis and is called so, because of the ability of the cells of this tumor to differentiate into epithelial cells and mesenchymal cells, which gives it an unusual histologic pattern. Literature reports most PAs to be associated with parotid salivary glands and palatal salivary glands, the latter being the most common intraoral site of origin. Interestingly, no cas

Endobronchial Sialolipoma: An Uncommon Salivary Gland Tumor at an Uncommon Site.

BACKGROUND: Sialolipoma is a benign neoplasm composed of neoplastic adipose tissue and normal salivary gland parenchyma. It is commonly seen in the parotid gland. The occurrence of sialolipoma in the main bronchus is exceedingly rare. CASE REPORT: A 52-year-old diabetic and hypertensive gentleman presented with shortness of breath and cough for the last 3-4 months. Computed tomography bronchial angiography showed a soft tissue lesion in the right intermediate bronchus causing its complete obliteration and subsequent collapse of the right lower lobe. A rigid tracheobronchoscope revealed a poly

ATYPICAL CARCINOID OF THE LARYNX AND MULTIFOCAL METASTASES.

Neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) of the larynx is the most frequent neuroendocrine neoplasm of the head and neck and the most common nonsquamous carcinoma of the larynx. It usually occurs in the supraglottic area, in smoking men. We report a case of a 58-year-old woman with no history of smoking who presented with an atypical carcinoid, arising in the right piriform sinus of the larynx. During the 5-year follow-up, the patient developed metastases in the lymph nodes, palatine tonsils, parotid glands, breasts and skin. For this reason the patient underwent several surgical procedures, radiotherap

Benign myoepithelioma of the soft palate: an unusual clinical entity.

Myoepitheliomas are rare benign tumours that affect the exocrine glands and are sporadically located in the salivary glands. The most common location of myoepithelioma in the oral cavity is the parotid gland and it is seldom encountered in the palate. The diagnosis of this entity is challenging since its clinical presentation may resemble those of more common neoplasms, rendering a complex histopathological diagnosis. The aim of the present case report is to describe an unusual case of myoepithelioma of the soft palate in a male patient, which developed as an asymptomatic, slowly growing mass.

Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor of Parotid Gland: A Rare Entity With Diagnostic Challenge.

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasm that typically affects young patients and presents as large intraabdominal masses. We report a rare case of parotid gland DSRCT in a 38-year-old man. The tumor cells were large sized and form irregular nests embedded in abundant desmoplastic stroma. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin, GATA3, p40, and p63. Working differential diagnosis included squamous cell carcinoma, myoepithelial carcinoma, hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma, NUT (nuclear protein of the testis) carcinoma, and

RECURRENT PLEOMORPHIC ADENOMA OF THE UPPER LIP: CASE REPORT AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE.

INTRODUCTION: Pleomorphic adenoma or mixed tumour is a benign salivary gland tumour, presenting usually in the parotid or submandibular glands. This tumour contains elements of both epithelial and mesenchymal origin. They are the most common tumours (50%), (60-65%) of the major and minor salivary glands. The palate is considered as the most common intraoral site (42.8-68.8%), followed by the upper lip (10.1%) and cheek (5.5%). CASE REPORT: A 37 year old female Nigerian house wife was seen with a four year history of painless slowly progressive upper lip swelling. Prior to her presentation, sh

An Exquisite Case Report of Follicular Variant of Acinic Cell Carcinoma of the Parotid Gland With Review of Literature.

Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC), previously called acinic cell tumor, is an uncommon malignant neoplasm that tends to recur locally without proper treatment measures. This low-grade neoplasm has four histological subtypes. We hereby report a case of a follicular variant of ACC, which is a rare subtype. A 20-year literature search encompassing this variant of ACC of the parotid region was also performed, which showed four reported cases. A 60-year-old woman reported to our college, Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences, with the chief complaint of pain and swelling in her upper right back tooth regi
