[Case report: a bacteremic pasteurellosis].

Bacteremic pasteurellosis is an uncommon form of Pasteurella multocida infection, usually involved in local infections. This systemic infection often occurs in immuno-compromised patient such as cirrhotic or alcoholic patients, with a high mortality rate (up to 60%). Septic shock may occur and neurological disorders or coma are frequent. We report such a case. Treatment associated local care, antibiotics (beta-lactam antibiotics plus fluoroquinolone) during 14 days and resuscitation of septic shock. Owing these therapies, septic shock was successfully treated without complications.

Outbreak of pasteurellosis in captive Bolivian squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis).

In September 2012, five Bolivian squirrel monkeys housed in a zoological park died within sequential several days without obvious clinical signs. In a necrospy, one monkey presented swelling of the kidney with multifocal white nodules in the parenchyma, and other two had pulmonary congestion. Histopathologically, multifocal bacterial colonies of gram-negative coccobacillus were found in the sinusoid of the liver in all monkeys examined (Nos.1-4). Additionally, purulent pyelonephritis, pneumonia and disseminated small bacterial colonies in blood vessels were observed. Immunohistochemically, the

Cat bite in an old patient: is it a simple injury?

An 84-year-old woman bitten by her domestic cat developed a severe wound infection caused by Pasteurella multocida. Although she was treated with antibiotics according to the bacterial sensitivity, the infection progressed to sepsis and became complicated by transient renal failure caused by interstitial nephritis. The need in the emergency department for a thorough examination of patients with domestic animal-inflicted injuries, the indication for surgical debridement, and the isolation of the offender by early obtained cultures are considered. The administration of the properly chosen antibi…

Suppurative otitis media in the rabbit: prevalence, pathology, and microbiology.

The middle ears of 2001 young and 583 adult rabbits being slaughtered for human consumption were examined. Otitis media was found in 87 (4%) of the young rabbits, and in 188 (32%) of the adult rabbits. The condition was bilateral in 61% of the affected young rabbits and 70% of the affected adults. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from 60 (98%) of 61 affected young rabbits. The gross and microscopic lesions and secondary complications were similar to those described in children. Rupture of the tympanic membrane was observed in both affected young and affected adult rabbits.

Hemorrhagic septicemia: A major threat to livestock health.

Hemorrhagic septicemia (HS) is an acute septicemic disease that primarily affects cattle and buffalo. This illness is caused by a specific serotype of Gram-negative coccobacillus, Pasteurella multocida. The frequency and distribution of HS epidemics involving various animal species vary according to the agroclimatic zone. HS has significant economic implications, particularly in Asia and, to a lesser extent, Africa. The transmission of HS can occur through direct contact, ingestion, or inhalation of contaminated feed or water. The virulence factors of P. multocida include a number of defense m…

Gamma-Irradiated Fowl Cholera Mucosal Vaccine: Potential Vaccine Candidate for Safe and Effective Immunization of Chicken Against Fowl Cholera.

Fowl cholera (FC) caused by Pasteurella multocida is among the serious infectious diseases of poultry. Currently, formalin inactivated FC (FI-FC) vaccine is widely used in Ethiopia. However, reports of the disease complaint remain higher despite the use of the vaccine. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate gamma-irradiated mucosal FC vaccines that can be used nationally. In a vaccination-challenge experiment, the performance of gamma-irradiated P. multocida (at 1 kGy) formulated with Montanide gel/01 PR adjuvant was evaluated at different dose rates (0.5 and 0.3 ml) and routes (int…

Bacteriologic analysis of infected dog and cat bites. Emergency Medicine Animal Bite Infection Study Group.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: To define better the bacteria responsible for infections of dog and cat bites, we conducted a prospective study at 18 emergency departments. To be eligible for enrollment, patients had to meet one of three major criteria for infection of a bite wound (fever, abscess, and lymphangitis) or four of five minor criteria (wound-associated erythema, tenderness at the wound site, swelling at the site, purulent drainage, and leukocytosis). Wound specimens were cultured for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria at a research microbiology laboratory and, in some cases, at local hospital

Fatal pneumonia of bighorn sheep following association with domestic sheep.

During 1979-1980 acute fibrinopurulent bronchopneumonia resulted in high mortality or total loss of herds of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in California and Washington. Contact with domestic sheep occurred shortly before the onset of disease in each case. Circumstantial evidence indicated that the apparently healthy domestic sheep transmitted pathogenic bacteria to the bighorns, resulting in mortality. Pasteurella multocida and Corynebacterium pyogenes were isolated from pulmonary tissue of dead bighorns. The presence of domestic sheep may have been an important stress which initiated or com…

Standard PK/PD concepts can be applied to determine a dosage regimen for a macrolide: the case of tulathromycin in the calf.

The pharmacokinetic (PK) profile of tulathromycin, administered to calves subcutaneously at the dosage of 2.5 mg/kg, was established in serum, inflamed (exudate), and noninflamed (transudate) fluids in a tissue cage model. The PK profile of tulathromycin was also established in pneumonic calves. For Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida, tulathromycin minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were approximately 50 times lower in calf serum than in Mueller-Hinton broth. The breakpoint value of the PK/pharmacodynamic (PD) index (AUC(0-24 h) /MIC) to achieve a bactericidal effect was est…

Unique presentation of an intramuscular abscess caused by Bacteroides pyogenes in the setting of a cat bite: A case report.

Cat bites are a relatively common emergency department presentation. The most common species isolated from cat bite wounds is Pasteurella multocida. In this case report, we discuss a unique case of an intramuscular abscess caused by Bacteroides pyogenes. Antibiotic resistance in Bacteroides species is a growing concern and thus should be treated with caution. We present an 81-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with left calf pain that began 3 weeks prior to the emergency department presentation. She was initially seen by her primary care provider and was prescribed oral …

Clinical features of pasteurellosis without an animal bite or scratch in comparison with bite/scratch pasteurellosis.

Pasteurellosis is a common zoonotic infection that occurs after an animal bite or scratch (B/S). We compared the clinical features of six patients with non-B/S pasteurellosis with those of 14 patients with B/S infections. Pasteurella multocida was identified with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry in all six non-B/S infections, whereas 13 of the 14 B/S infections were identified with diagnostic kits. The non-B/S infections were pneumonia (n = 3), skin and soft tissue infections (n = 2), and bacteremia (n = 1). Pneumonia occurred in two patients with un…

Bite wounds and infection.

One of every two Americans will be bitten by an animal or by another person at some point. Bites account for approximately 1% of all visits to emergency rooms; injuries inflicted by dogs are most common. The bacteria involved in infection of bite wounds include Pasteurella multocida, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus intermedius, alpha-hemolytic streptococci, Capnocytophaga canimorsus, and other members of the oral flora. Anaerobic bacteria are present in approximately one-third of bite wounds and are associated with the formation of abscesses and with relatively serious infections. P. mul…
