Development and validation of the Peer Interaction Macro-Coding System Scales (PIMS): a new tool for observational measurement of social competence in youth with spina bifida.

Many children with chronic health conditions encounter enduring difficulties in their peer interactions and friendships. This study aimed to create and validate scales derived from an observational coding system (i.e., Peer Interaction Macro-Coding System, or PIMS) in a sample of children with spina bifida and their peers. Participants were 106 target child-peer dyads who completed a battery of questionnaires and interviews and were videotaped performing 4 interaction tasks, which were then coded across multiple domains of social functioning. Five scales (i.e., Control, Prosocial Skills, Posit

Extrinsic relative to intrinsic goal pursuits and peer dynamics: selection and influence processes among adolescents.

Self-Determination Theory discerns goals and values in terms of whether they are intrinsic or extrinsic in nature. Although research substantiates the importance of goal preferences for a host of outcomes, few studies examined how such preferences develop, and studies that did pay attention to this focused on parental influence processes. The present study focuses on the role of peers. Social network analyses on longitudinal data gathered among senior high-school students (N = 695) confirm that peer similarity in goal pursuit exists, and that, although this similarity partly originates from ad

Family process and peer deviance influences on adolescent aggression: longitudinal effects across early and middle adolescence.

Beginning in sixth grade at an average age of 11.9 years, 416 adolescents and their parents participated in 4 waves of data collection involving family observations and multiple-reporter assessments. Ecological theory and the process-person-context-time (PPCT) model guided the hypotheses and analyses. Lagged, growth curve models revealed that family hostility and peer deviance affiliation predicted adolescent aggression in the subsequent year. Family warmth played only a minor role in protecting against adolescent aggression. In hostile or low-warmth families, peer deviance affiliation linked

Gender differences in the assessment, stability, and correlates to bullying roles in middle school children.

The current study investigated bullying behaviors in 284 school children in the fourth through seventh grades at the time of the initial assessment. Peer ratings of bullying behavior were obtained at the end of the spring semester of one school year and at the end of the fall semester of the next school year. Importantly, peer ratings were obtained by assessing not only the level at which participants actually bully other students but also whether participants help bullies to hurt the victim (assister), encourage bullies (reinforce), or help the victim of bullying (defender). Our results did n

Associations between peer victimization, self-reported depression and social phobia among adolescents: the role of comorbidity.

Associations of peer victimization with adolescent depression and social phobia (SP), while controlling for comorbidity between them, have not been sufficiently explored in earlier research. A total of 3156 Finnish adolescents aged 15-16 years participated in a survey study. Self-reported peer victimization, as well as self-reported depression (Beck Depression Inventory), SP (Social Phobia Inventory), and selected background variables were assessed. Frequency of overt and covert peer victimization was examined among four groups: (1) adolescents with depression non-comorbid with SP (DEP), (2) t

Out-of-school settings as a developmental context for children and youth.

Since the 1990s, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of the out-of-school context for children and adolescents. Fueled in part by family demographics that include substantial numbers of employed mothers and single mothers, in part by concerns about poor academic performance and problem behaviors, and in part by intensified efforts to find ways to promote positive youth development, researchers and practitioners have focused their attention on two particular out-of-school settings: after-school programs and structured activities. The research findings pertaining to full-time

Teaching mathematics to students with mild-to-moderate mental retardation: a review of the literature.

A systematic search of the literature from 1989 through 1998 was conducted to identify and analyze mathematics interventions for students with mild-to-moderate mental retardation. We found that the focus of instruction has shifted from basic skills instruction to computation and problem-solving instruction. Techniques such as constant-time delay, peer tutoring, time trials, and direct instruction proved beneficial in improving mathematics skills. Further, students with mental retardation learned to employ cognitive strategies successfully when these techniques were included. Although this info

Sober living houses: potential roles in substance abuse services and suggestions for research.

'Sober living houses' are alcohol- and drug-free residences for individuals attempting to establish or maintain sobriety. They offer no formal treatment services but do provide social support and an abstinent living environment. 'Sober living houses' have been used as aftercare placements for clients completing residential treatment, places for clients to live while attending outpatient treatment, or as stand-alone approaches for substance misuse problems. This article identifies areas of research needing attention and suggests that 'sober living houses' have the potential to play a stronger r

Knowledge, attitudes and preventive efforts of Malaysian medical students regarding exposure to environmental tobacco and cigarette smoking.

A longitudinal study was conducted to determine changes in knowledge, attitudes and preventive efforts of Malaysian medical students concerning cigarette smoking and environmental exposure to tobacco smoke from their first pre-clinical year in medical school until their final clinical year. There were significant improvements in knowledge about cigarette smoking and in knowledge, attitudes and efforts concerning environmental exposure to tobacco smoke. Overall attitudes concerning cigarette smoking did not change over this period. The same pattern was found for male non-smokers. Women improved

Community-based resilient peer treatment of withdrawn maltreated preschool children.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate differences in the social play of maltreated and nonmaltreated preschool children and the effectiveness of a resilient peer treatment (RPT) for socially withdrawn victims of physical abuse and neglect. RPT is a peer-mediated classroom intervention based on a developmental-ecological model. It involves pairing withdrawn children with resilient peers in the natural classroom under the supervision of a parent assistant. Forty-six Head Start children, of whom 22 were maltreated, were randomly assigned to RPT and control conditions. Outcome variables

Speech outcome following palatoplasty in primary school children: do lay peer observers agree with speech pathologists?

The aim of this study was twofold: (1) to test the ability of normal children to discriminate the speech of children with repaired cleft pal … he utilization of untrained listeners to add real-life significance to clinical speech assessments. Peer group evaluations of speech acceptability may define the morbidity of cleft palate speech in terms that are most relevant to the patients themselves and may safeguard against the possibility of offering treatment that may be unnecessary.

The relation of hostile nonverbal communication styles to popularity in preadolescent children.

Some assumptions of interpersonal theory were tested among a population of preadolescent children. Children were videotaped while interacting with a same-sex peer, and their verbal and nonverbal communications were judged by other peers who were not participants in the study. Children rated as socially unattractive by their peers had communication styles characterized by nonverbal visual hostility. These results support the assumption that negative nonverbal communications are associated with relationship difficulties.

Perceived changes in innovation and entrepreneurship competency among medical students following peer-assisted learning: an exploratory study of implementation fidelity.

BACKGROUND: Traditional medical innovation and entrepreneurship (I&E) education faces severe faculty constraints. While Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) offers a scalable alternative, its impact on complex I&E competencies and the reliability of peer-led instruction remain underexplored. This exploratory study evaluates the association of a structured PAL model with students' perceived I&E competency and its implementation fidelity. METHODS: Fifty-four medical students completed a prospective, six-workshop PAL program. Perceived I&E competency was assessed pre- and post-intervention via a validat

Measurement and Correlates of Peer Social Support During Brief Psychiatric Treatment: The Fellow Travelers in Treatment Scale.

OBJECTIVES: Many forms of psychiatric treatment include social experiences as part of treatment. Patients often have both formal and informal opportunities to interact with their peers while receiving treatment in settings such as residential, inpatient, and partial hospital levels of care. However, patients' perceptions of these formal and informal social encounters are not routinely assessed in clinical care or clinical research, and the extent to which these social experiences are related to positive or negative outcomes during treatment is unclear. METHODS: The authors developed a 19-item

Peer mentorship for physically injured veterans in healthcare settings during ongoing military conflict: benefits and barriers.

BACKGROUND: Peer mentorship by individuals with lived experience is increasingly recognized as supporting recovery after severe injury. Yet evidence on its role in hospital-based rehabilitation remains limited, particularly in cases of severe war-related physical injury during ongoing military conflict. This study examines the benefits and barriers of peer mentorship within the Israel Defense Forces Casualties Affairs Unit, which trains previously injured veterans to accompany newly injured soldiers during hospitalization in healthcare settings as part of their reserve duty. METHODS: The stud

Positive Reframing of Psychosis Risk Reduces Social Stigma and Desire for Social Distance Among Adolescents: Moderating Roles of Prodromal Experiences, Sex, and Culture.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Communication about the at-risk mental state may shape not only clinical understanding but also peer-directed social evaluations. Prior work from our group has shown that positively reframing psychosis-risk feedback reduces perceived emotional harm and clinician stigma. The present study examined whether positive reframing influences adolescents' peer-directed social stigma and desire for social distance toward an at-risk youth, and whether these effects are moderated by adolescents' own distressing prodromal experiences, sex, and cultural background. METHODS: One hundred
