Persistent cognitive deficits in community-treated alcoholic men and women volunteering for research: limited contribution from psychiatric comorbidity.

OBJECTIVE: The contribution of psychiatric comorbidity to cognitive status was assessed in a sample of treatment-seeking alcoholics who met criteria to participate in studies of effects of chronic alcohol misuse on brain structure and cognition. METHOD: Alcoholic men (n = 43) and women (n = 21) who responded to notices about a research study were screened, clinically assessed and administered Wechsler Memory and Intelligence tests after 3 months of sobriety, on average. Cognitive performance was compared with that of an age-matched sample of healthy controls (n = 51). RESULTS: As a group, th

Clinical anxiety among a sample of dental students in South Sinai.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety may be induced in the dental clinics, which is an essential learning environment for undergraduate dental students. This could have a negative impact on clinical performance. This study aimed to estimate the incidence of clinical anxiety among a sample of Dental students and to determine possible precipitating factors for clinical anxiety among them. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 3rd and 4th year dental students at King Salman International University using the modified 34 items of Moss and McManus clinical anxiety questionnaire. RESULTS: 263 stud

Central relaxin-3 receptor (RXFP3) activation reduces elevated, but not basal, anxiety-like behaviour in C57BL/6J mice.

Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent neuropsychiatric conditions, but their precise aetiology and underlying pathophysiological processes remain poorly understood. In light of putative anatomical and functional interactions of the relaxin-3/RXFP3 system with anxiety-related neural circuits, we assessed the ability of central administration of the RXFP3 agonist, RXFP3-A2, to alter anxiety-like behaviours in adult C57BL/6J mice. We assessed how RXFP3-A2 altered performance in tests measuring rodent anxiety-like behaviour (large open field (LOF), elevated plus maze (EPM), light/dark (L/

Comparing cognitive fusion and cognitive reappraisal as predictors of college student mental health.

Transdiagnostic cognitive behavioral interventions target different cognitive processes to promote mental health, including cognitive fusion and cognitive reappraisal. Determining the relative impact of cognitive fusion and reappraisal on a range of student mental health concerns could help interventions target psychopathological cognitive processes more effectively. Therefore, this study examined the longitudinal impact of cognitive fusion and reappraisal on mental health and functioning outcomes. A series of hierarchical regression models tested the effects of cognitive fusion and reappraisa

The effects of trait and state anxiety on attention to emotional images: an eye-tracking study.

Attentional biases for threatening stimuli have been implicated in the development of anxiety disorders. However, little is known about the relative influences of trait and state anxiety on attentional biases. This study examined the effects of trait and state anxiety on attention to emotional images. Low, mid, and high trait anxious participants completed two trial blocks of an eye-tracking task. Participants viewed image pairs consisting of one emotional (threatening or positive) and one neutral image while their eye movements were recorded. Between trial blocks, participants underwent an an

Processing of task-irrelevant natural scenes in social anxiety.

In this study, by manipulating perceptual load, we investigated whether socially anxious people process task-irrelevant, non-emotional, natural scenes. When attention was directed to letters and perceptual load was low, task-irrelevant natural scenes were processed, as evidenced by repetition priming effects, in both high and low socially anxious people. In the high perceptual load condition, repetition-priming effects decreased in participants with low social anxiety, but not in those with high social anxiety. The results were the same when attention was directed to pictures of animals: even

The effects of phencyclidine (PCP) on anxiety-like behavior in the elevated plus maze and the light-dark exploration test are age dependent, sexually dimorphic, and task dependent.

Previous research in our laboratory revealed sexually dimorphic effects of prior exposure to phencyclidine (PCP) on elevated plus maze behavior. In an attempt to examine the developmental time course of this effect and determine the extent to which it generalizes to other anxiety paradigms, young adult (61-64 days old) and adult (96-107 days old) male and female rats were treated with PCP (15 mg/kg) or saline. Following a two week withdrawal period, animals were tested in either the elevated plus maze (EPM) or a light-dark exploration (LD) test. In adults, both tests revealed a sexually dimorp

Effect of benzodiazepines on structural and conceptual/lexical priming.

RATIONALE: Impaired perceptual priming, as assessed by naming reaction times and accuracy, for briefly presented contour-deleted pictures under lorazepam has been documented in several studies but whether the nature of this impairment is visual versus conceptual/lexical is not clear. We used a previously developed paradigm to examine whether lorazepam affects visual processes involved in the coding of contour information or conceptual/lexical representations. METHOD: Three groups were tested (lorazepam, diazepam and placebo). In the study phase, participants named line drawings, presented for

Interactions of benzodiazepines on psychomotor skills.

Interactions of centrally active drugs are difficult to analyse in man due to methodological and ethical problems. Alcoholic and methylxanthine beverages are the most common centrally active agents that might modify the effects of benzodiazepines on performance. In sufficiently large doses ethanol enhances the effects of benzodiazepines, even those that are not metabolized by mixed function oxidases sensitive to blockade by ethanol. Consequently, the combined effect of ethanol and benzodiazepines may occur at the receptor level and/or result from altered binding of benzodiazepines to plasma pr

Transforming work or eroding social capital? How reliance on artificial intelligence drives workplace involution.

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into organizational contexts is reshaping how employees work, interact, and respond to changing workplace dynamics. Although AI is often expected to improve efficiency and reduce workload, emerging evidence points to a potential dark side, as AI adoption may intensify competitive pressure within organizations. Motivated by this paradox, this study examines how AI reliance may erode workplace social capital by fostering involution-an excessive and inefficient form of competition characterized by escalating effort and diminishing returns. Thi

How emotions affect logical reasoning: evidence from experiments with mood-manipulated participants, spider phobics, and people with exam anxiety.

Recent experimental studies show that emotions can have a significant effect on the way we think, decide, and solve problems. This paper presents a series of four experiments on how emotions affect logical reasoning. In two experiments different groups of participants first had to pass a manipulated intelligence test. Their emotional state was altered by giving them feedback, that they performed excellent, poor or on average. Then they completed a set of logical inference problems (with if p, then q statements) either in a Wason selection task paradigm or problems from the logical propositiona

[CogniScan, a new tool for assessing subjective cognitive decline: Preliminary exploration of links with interoception, personality type and anxiety-depression affects].

As the population ages, the prevalence of neurocognitive disorders is increasing. Among the earliest manifestations of these disorders, subjective cognitive decline (SCD) warrants particular attention, as it may represent an early indicator of future neurocognitive impairment. To address this issue, the CogniScan questionnaire was developed. This study aimed to examine its psychometric properties and to investigate factors associated with SCD, including anxiety and depressive symptoms, personality traits, and interoception. CogniScan, a questionnaire assessing five cognitive domains (memory, a

Burden of Anxiety Among School-Going Adolescents in Urban Bhopal: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence is a critical developmental stage marked by physical, emotional, and psychological changes, making individuals vulnerable to mental health challenges, particularly anxiety. Anxiety during adolescence can significantly impact daily functioning, school performance, and relationships. In India, the prevalence of anxiety among adolescents is rising, exacerbated by academic pressures, social expectations, and limited mental health services. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of anxiety among school-going adolescents in Bhopal and to identify the associated factors.

Dynamic myocardial perfusion computed tomography with mental stress test to detect changes in myocardial microcirculation in patients with anxiety and no obstructive coronary artery disease.

OBJECTIVE: Mental stress can induce myocardial ischemia in patients with anxiety and other psychological disorders. Computed tomography myocardial perfusion imaging (CT-MPI) has the potential to quantitatively diagnose myocardial ischemia. The aim of this study was to measure changes in myocardial microcirculation perfusion (MMP) in patients with anxiety who have angina symptoms/ischemia but no obstructive coronary artery disease (INOCA) using dynamic CT-MPI in combination with a mental stress test. METHODS: Patients with INOCA were divided into five subgroups (none, minimal, mild, moderate,

The involvement of orexin 1 and cannabinoid 1 receptors within the ventrolateral periaqueductal gray matter in the modulation of migraine-induced anxiety and social behavior deficits of rats.

Orexin 1 receptors (Orx1R) and cannabinoid 1 receptors (CB1R) are implicated in migraine pathophysiology. This study evaluated the potential involvement of Orx1R and CB1R within the ventrolateral periaqueductal gray matter (vlPAG) in the modulation of anxiety-like behavior and social interaction of migraineurs rats. A rat model of migraine induced by recurrent administration of nitroglycerin (NTG) (5 mg/kg/i.p.). The groups of rats (n = 6) were then subjected to intra-vlPAG microinjection of orexin-A (25, 50 pM), and Orx1R antagonist SB334867 (20, 40 nM) or AM 251 (2, 4 μg) as a CB1R antagonis

Experimentally induced and real-world anxiety have no demonstrable effect on goal-directed behaviour.

BACKGROUND: Goal-directed control guides optimal decision-making and it is an important cognitive faculty that protects against developing habits. Previous studies have found some evidence of goal-directed deficits when healthy individuals are stressed, and in psychiatric conditions characterised by compulsive behaviours and anxiety. Here, we tested if goal-directed control is affected by state anxiety, which might explain the former results. METHODS: We carried out a causal test of this hypothesis in two experiments (between-subject N = 88; within-subject N = 50) that used the inhalation of

The influence of cognition, anxiety and psychiatric disorders over treatment adherence in uncontrolled hypertensive patients.

BACKGROUND: Poor adherence is estimated to cause 125 thousand deaths per year and is linked to 10% of all hospital stays in the U.S. Up to one third of elderly hypertensive patients don't have adherence, which is responsible for high proportion of hospitalizations. Hypertension is also related to poor performance in tests that assess cognitive functions. On the other hand, poor cognitive performance is associated with low adherence to treatment. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between cognitive function, anxiety and psychiatric disorders with adherence to drug treatment in patients with
