Spontaneous peritonitis and rheumatoid arthritis--a case report.

An unusual case in which an adult patient with rheumatoid arthritis developed a fulminant spontaneous gram-positive bacterial peritonitis and underwent emergency laparotomy for this condition is presented. Spontaneous peritonitis in adult patients was previously seen only in patients with liver disease, nephrotic syndrome or systemic lupus erythematosus.

[Pathophysiology and morbidity of paralytic ileus (including peritonitis)].

Main complication of different diseases is the paralytic ileus. The basis of all pathophysiological mechanisms is a decrease of the immune deficiency in the intestinal wall. At first the intestinal water-, electrolyte- and protein metabolism is disturbed. Secondly we can measure an endotoxinemia and a bacteriemia with all complications. In the end a complete septic shock and an insufficiency of the organ "gut" can be observed. The patients die - in absence of treatment - because of intraabdominal sepsis and peritonitis.

Characterization of a feline infectious peritonitis virus isolate.

A virus isolated in cell culture from the spleen of a cat with feline infectious peritonitis was identified by physicochemical, morphological and antigenic criteria as a coronavirus. The feline infectious peritonitis virus was compared in vitro with canine coronavirus, a reported enteric pathogen of dogs. The feline isolate was characterized, by chloroform sensitivity and resistance to 5-iododeoxyuridine, respectively, as containing essential lipid and an RNA genome. Other traits of the isolate included resistance to acidic conditions, heat lability, and resistance to trypsin. Electron microsc…

The treatment of peritonitis by an antiseptic - taurolin.

An open study was carried out on patients with acute appendicitis to assess the effectiveness of taurolin, a new antiseptic which destroys both bacteria and endotoxin, when used intraperitoneally in cases of purulent peritonitis associated with perforated or gangrenous appendicitis. Seventy-four out of 319 patients received taurolin; the others were treated by operation only or by operation and antibiotics as required. The results suggest that taurolin was effective as monotherapy in peritonitis and endotoxic shock and its use avoids the problems associated with antibiotics.

Spontaneous Arizona hinshawii peritonitis in cirrhosis with ascites.

Arizona hinshawii, a gram-negative enteric pathogen, causes serious infections in fowl, reptiles, and other animals. In humans, gastroenteritis, enteric fever, septicemia, and localized infections due to Arizona have occurred. There are no previous reports of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis secondary to Arizona, however. We report here a case of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis due to Arizona occurring in a patient with cirrhosis of the alcoholic type. The patient was treated with a 10-day course of gentamicin, and although she improved clinically, Arizona was cultured from the blood and bi…

Bile peritonitis and miliary tuberculosis: a case report.

We report an unusual case of bile peritonitis in a child. The literature on bile peritonitis is reviewed, and its treatment is discussed. According to the literature, bile peritonitis has a good prognosis provided operation is early. Patients in whom bile is septic at the time of surgery have an increased morbidity and a considerable mortality.

Pasteurella multocida peritonitis in hepatic cirrhosis with ascites.

Two patients with spontaneous Pasteurella multocida peritonitis in association with cirrhosis and ascites are described. Both patients had close contact with domestic animals, but neither had been bitten. Both patients died, but only one as a result of his infection. We are aware of only one previous report of cirrhosis with spontaneous peritonitis caused by this organism. P. multocida should be considered as a possible cause of peritonitis in cirrhotic patients with a history of close contact with animals, particularly cats.

Bile peritonitis due to ruptured amoebic liver abscess.

A fatal case of bile peritonitis due to ruptured amoebic liver abscess is reported. Exudation of bile from a solitary abscess within the liver was the cause of the biliary peritonitis. Secondary bacterial peritontis and Gram negative septicaemia were complications and their clinical significance has been discussed.
