Dangerous and severe personality disorder: antecedents and origins.

The origins of the Dangerous and Severe Pesonality Disorder (DSPD) Programme can be traced to developments in structured assessment and services for the cognitive-behavioural treatment of sexual and violent offenders in other countries. A comparison with these other services highlights the strengths and weaknesses of DSPD. The decision to use a medical model raises ethical and financial questions that may jeopardise the Programme's future.

Neural correlates of antinociception in borderline personality disorder.

CONTEXT: A characteristic feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD) is self-injurious behavior in conjunction with stress-induced reduction of pain perception. Reduced pain sensitivity has been experimentally confirmed in patients with BPD, but the neural correlates of antinociceptive mechanisms in BPD are unknown. We predicted that heat stimuli in patients with BPD would activate brain areas concerned with cognitive and emotional evaluation of pain. OBJECTIVE: To assess the psychophysical properties and neural correlates of altered pain processing in patients with BPD. DESIGN: Case-c…

Suicide and deliberate self-harm in personality disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews literature published over the period January 2004-May 2005 on suicidal behaviour and self-harm in personality disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies have confirmed that personality disorders and their co-morbidity with other psychiatric conditions are risk factors for both fatal and nonfatal suicidal behaviours, and self-mutilation. Negative life events, childhood sexual abuse, difficulties in social functioning, deficits in future-directed thinking and time perception, as well as familial and neurocognitive factors may be related to increased suicide risk…

Personality assessment training: view from a licensing board.

The literature contains numerous surveys about assessment training at the level of both doctoral programs and internships. There is minimal information about how such training is assessed by state and provincial regulatory bodies. In this article, we describe the process used by one state licensing board to assess a licensure candidate's transcript, conduct an oral examination, and potentially recommend remediation when the candidate is found to be deficient in specified skills. Our focus in this article is on the application of this evaluation process to personality assessment, although we al…

Personality and eating disorders: a decade in review.

Personality traits have been implicated in the onset, symptomatic expression, and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs). The present article reviews literature examining the link between personality and EDs published within the past decade, and presents a meta-analysis evaluating the prevalence of personality disorders (PDs) in anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED) as assessed by self-report instruments versus diagnostic interviews. AN and BN are both consistently characterized by perfectionism, obsessive-compulsiveness, neuroticism, negative emotionality…

A dimensional approach to personality in atypical depression.

The current study addresses the relationship of personality and atypical depression using the Five-Factor Model (FFM), a dimensional approach to personality. The aim of the study was to help clarify which personality traits are more characteristic of atypical depression than of other depressive subtypes. Outpatients (n=160) with non-psychotic major depression were characterized as having atypical (n=26), or non-atypical depression (n=134) based on DSM-IV criteria. To limit the effect of state depression, personality was assessed after subjects received a minimum of 14 weeks of antidepressant t…

Impoverished dialogical relationship patterns in paranoid personality disorder.

In the opinion of many experts, the self is made up of numerous different, independent facets interacting with each other in an ongoing inner dialogue. The meaning of events depends on the form this dialogue takes. The hypothesis we discuss in this article is that patients suffering from paranoid personality disorder (PPD) present impoverished dialogical relationship patterns. By this we mean that: a) The characters operating on their mental stage are few and repetitive. The character identified as self is insufficient-inadequate or diffident-mistrusting-hostile. The characters embodied by oth…

[Evaluation of temperament and personality in bulimia nervosa].

UNLABELLED: Previous studies revealed the possibility of abnormal personality development role in the etiology of eating disorders. It was found that a diagnosis of personality disorders, mostly borderline personality and/or histrionic personality can be made in about 44-46% of bulimic patients. The inconsistencies in identifying personality types using categorical assessment approaches have encouraged a conceptualization of the personality from a dimensional perspective. It was revealed that the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ) and Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) are u…

Controllability awareness and maladjusted personality traits: preliminary findings.

Previous evidence from studies with college students on three continents and with teachers in an Israeli border community under constant ter … treatment of psychological stress. Correlational findings from measures of CA, perceived stress and personality variables indicate that CA is associated with higher stress tolerance irrespective of clinical diagnosis and appears to mitigate a wide range of psychological difficulties. Clinical and research implications are discussed.

Impulsivity and prefrontal hypometabolism in borderline personality disorder.

Prefrontal hypoperfusion and decreased glucose uptake in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) are found in violent criminal offenders, murderers and aggressive psychiatric patients. These abnormalities may be independent of diagnosis and associated with impulsive-aggression as a personality trait. Impulsive-aggression is a clinical characteristic of borderline personality disorder (BPD) where it is associated with assaultive and suicidal behaviors. We conducted FDG-PET studies in 13 non-depressed, impulsive female subjects with BPD and 9 healthy controls to look for abnormalities in glucose metabolism …

Expectancy influences the operation of personality on behavior.

The authors investigated the moderating effect of expectancies on personality for 2 different addictive behavior processes: (a) drinking and (b) binge eating and purging characteristic of bulimia nervosa. Study 1 found that positive expectancies for social facilitation from drinking moderated the effect of extraversion on drinking behavior among undergraduate men and women. Study 2 found that the expectancy that eating will help manage negative affect moderated the effect of trait urgency on bulimic symptoms among undergraduate women. Thus, the relationships of the trait risk factors to these …

Line bisection performance in patients with personality disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Normal line bisection deviation to the left of the true centre has been interpreted as resulting from relative right hemisphere activation. Right hemisphere involvement has also been associated with the problems in dependency and attachment from infancy to adulthood. This hemispheric association predicts that patients diagnosed with dependent personality disorder will deviate significantly to the left on the line bisection task. METHODS: This hypothesis was tested by comparing the results of the line bisection task obtained respectively from 30 right-handed healthy volunteers an…

Avoidant personality disorder: current status and future directions.

Avoidant Personality Disorder (APD) is the topic of a growing body of research literature. In this article, we review empirical studies of APD with the goals of identifying the themes that underlie this work and pointing to new directions for future research. In particular, we recommend that future studies evaluate several unique factors postulated by personality theorists to be central to this condition.

[Personality traits in depressive adolescents (diagnosis and prognosis].

The youthful depressions without psychotic symptoms are very similar in respect to syndrome appearance that makes it difficult to elucidate their nosologic origin and prognosis. To differentiate a diagnosis, psychodiagnostic methods--Cloninger personality inventory (TCI-125) and Raine Schizotypic Personality Questionnaire (SPQ-74)--were administered, along with clinico-psychopathological approach, in 144 patients with depression, aged 16-25 years. The data obtained allowed to detect statistically significant personality traits corresponding to 3 nosologic groups: slow progressive schizophrenia…

Personality disorders among subjects recovered from eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Personality disorders are common in symptomatic eating disorders subjects. Because personality symptoms could be exaggerated by malnutrition or Axis I disorders, we studied women who had recovered from eating disorders for at least 1 year to see if personality disorder symptoms persisted in the well state. METHOD: Personality disorders were evaluated in 10 women recovered from anorexia nervosa (AN), 28 women recovered from bulimia nervosa (BN), and 16 women recovered from AN and BN, using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R personality disorders. RESULTS: Fourteen of 5…

Personality and voice disorders: a superfactor trait analysis.

To determine whether personality factors play causal, concomitant, or consequential roles in common voice disorders, a vocally normal control group and four groups with voice disorders-functional dysphonia (FD), vocal nodules (VN), spasmodic dysphonia (SD), and unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP)-were compared on measures of personality and psychological adjustment. Superfactor group comparisons revealed that the majority of FD and VN subjects were classified as introverts and extraverts, respectively. Comparisons involving the SD, UVFP, and control subjects did not identify consistent pers…

Personality and voice disorders: a multitrait-multidisorder analysis.

To examine whether personality has causal, concomitant, or outcome status in common voice disorders, a vocally normal control group and 4 groups with voice disorders--functional dysphonia (FD), vocal nodules (VN), spasmodic dysphonia (SD), and unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP)--were compared using the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire (MPQ). Univariate and discriminant analyses confirmed that the FD and VN groups differed significantly from each other, the controls, and the other voice-disordered groups at both a superfactor and lower-trait level of personality description. Axis I diagnostic comorbidity and borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (PD) has been the most studied PD. Research has examined the relationship between borderline PD and most axis I diagnostic classes such as eating disorders, mood disorders, and substance use disorders. However, there is little information regarding the relationship of borderline PD and overall comorbidity with all classes of axis I disorders assessed simultaneously. In the present study, 409 patients were evaluated with semistructured diagnostic interviews for axis I and axis II disorders. Patients with a diagnosis of borderline PD versus those who did not recei…
