Suicidal ideation (SI) is understood to emerge usually from the interplay of stable vulnerabilities and fluctuating situational stressors. This study explicitly tested this notion by examining whether impairments in personality functioning moderate the relationship between momentary loneliness and SI in daily life. A total of 180 participants (N = 85 inpatients, N = 95 community members) completed a baseline assessment of personality functioning (Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnosis Structure Questionnaire) and a signal-contingent 10-day ecological momentary assessment of loneliness and pas

AIM: Hand hygiene and personal protective equipment (PPE) are essential components for infection control. However, existing data are inconclusive regarding the impact of ethanol-based hand rubs on glove integrity, and evidence is limited on whether individual PPE components maintain adequate fit and usability during physically demanding clinical tasks. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a simulation-based protocol, designed to investigate hygiene- and PPE-related benefits and limitations under realistic emergency conditions.
METHODS: In a prospective observational study, 60

In understanding and treatment of tension type headache the psychological stress is considered as one of the most important factors causing and strengthening headache. The aim of this work was the assessment of personality traits in patients suffering from tension-type headache. Methods of this study were based on investigation of the dimensions of personality using the Eysenck Personality Inventory EPQ-R and the assessment of psychological stress using a Questionnaire of Demographic Variables. The group of 120 patients suffering from tension-type headache was assessed and 30 control subjects

Knowledge of stability during sample transportation and changes in biomarker concentrations within person over time are paramount for proper design and interpretation of epidemiologic studies based on a single measurement of biomarker status. Therefore, we investigated stability and intraindividual vs. interindividual variation in blood concentrations of biomarkers related to vitamin status, one-carbon metabolism, and the kynurenine pathway. Whole blood (EDTA and heparin, n = 12) was stored with an icepack for 24 or 48 h, and plasma concentrations of 38 biomarkers were determined. Stability wa

Differentiating autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) without accompanying intellectual impairment from personality disorders is often challenging. Identifying personality traits and personality pathology specific to ASD might facilitate diagnostic procedure. We recruited a sample of 59 adults with ASD without accompanying intellectual impairment, 62 individuals with narcissistic personality disorder, 80 individuals with borderline personality disorder, and 106 nonclinical controls. Personality traits, measured with the neo-personality inventory-revised (NEO-PI-R), and personality pathology, measur

The goal of this commentary is to highlight clinical applications of personality assessment research via two recent studies that are distinguished by their use of innovative experimental, multimethod designs. These studies evaluate implicit behaviors as predicted by clinically relevant facets of personality functioning. Parallels to implicit behaviors evoked in the context of psychotherapy are discussed, as is the value of assessing and intervening on the subtle manifestations of personality dysfunction observed by clinicians, especially when they do not comport to the patient's self-assessmen…

INTRODUCTION: In neuropsychological research, "organic personality disorder", lack of social insight, and executive dysfunctions have been identified in patients with prefrontal brain injury. The assessment of personality change has, in particular, been a methodological challenge in this field of research. The aim of the present pilot study was to examine personality aspects in patients with prefrontal brain injury from a neuropsychological as well as a psychodynamic point of view.
METHODS: A total of 13 adults with personality change as a manifest sequel after sudden onset brain injury were

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The International Classification of Diseases 11th revision (ICD-11) introduced a new approach to personality disorders and related traits. This paper reviews recent literature on the assessment of ICD-11 personality disorders and implications for clinical diagnosis, decision-making, and treatment.
RECENT FINDINGS: We reviewed findings on two measures developed for the ICD-11 model of personality dysfunction and six inventories for the ICD-11 trait specifiers. The psychometric qualities of these tools are promising, and they allow for both rapid screening and fine-grained as

Two-year stability of Physical Anhedonia (PhA), Perceptual Aberration (PER), and Magical Ideation (MI) scale scores and their relation to personality disorder traits were examined. Additionally, the effects of a time-lagged (prospective) versus concurrent measurement of psychosis proneness and personality disorder traits were studied to examine the specificity of MI, PER, and PhA. With a non-college-student sample (n = 404), stability for PhA was sufficiently high, but for PER and MI, stability was moderate to low. The correlations between personality disorder traits and psychosis proneness sc

OBJECTIVES: Many people who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder also have comorbid personality disorder. Few studies have explored how personality disorder may influence pharmacological treatment outcomes. The aim of this study was to conduct a secondary analysis of data from a clinical trial of adjunctive nutraceutical treatments for bipolar depression, to determine whether maladaptive personality traits influence treatment outcomes.
METHODS: Scores on the Standardised Assessment of Personality - Abbreviated Scale screener were used to classify participants as having bipolar disorder with (n

INTRODUCTION: While ample data demonstrate the effectiveness of inpatient psychosomatic treatment, clinical observation and empirical evidence demonstrate that not all patients benefit equally from established therapeutic methods. Especially patients with a comorbid personality disorder often show reduced therapeutic success compared to other patient groups. Due to the heterogeneous and categorical personality assessment, previous studies indicated no uniform direction of this influence. This complicates the derivation of therapeutic recommendations for mental disorders with comorbid personali…

BACKGROUND: Certain personality traits increase vulnerability to depression, but the evidence linking personality and postpartum depression … sociated with PPD (OR: 1.37; 95%CI: 1.22-1.53; p<0.001).
LIMITATIONS: Study design and approach to personality assessment influence results. Prospective longitudinal studies of persons with no prior history of mood disorder would provide stronger evidence about whether particular personality traits predict PPD. Most studies reviewed used self-report measures to assess …

This is the first outcome report of the effect of a personality disorder on nonhospitalized major depressive patients that used a standardized DSM-III measure and did not prescreen to eliminate certain personality disorders. Six-month outcome was compared for nonpsychotic patients with major depression and a DSM-III personality disorder (n = 26) and those who did not have a personality disorder (n = 11). Patients without a personality disorder had significantly better outcome as measured by the Global Assessment Scale and employment status. There was also a trend for less physician utilization

Antagonism is a personality domain located in most major trait models and is central to multiple personality disorders. This construct has been linked to many societally harmful externalizing behaviors (e.g., criminal conduct). Consequently, accurate assessment of this trait is important in both research and clinical settings. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) is among the most widely used personality assessment instruments, and both researchers and clinicians using it can benefit from proper assessment of antagonism. Although the Personality Psychopathology Five measu…

BACKGROUND: Persistence is said to be a feature of personality disorder, but there are few long-term prospective studies of the condition. A total of 200 patients with anxiety and depressive disorders involved in a randomised controlled trial initiated in 1983 had full personality status assessed at baseline. We repeated assessment of personality status on three subsequent occasions over 30 years.
METHODS: Personality status was recorded using methods derived from the Personality Assessment Schedule, which has algorithms for allocating Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DS…

Contemporary models of the diagnosis and classification of personality disorders have diverged from the categorical diagnostic framework of the DSM system. One response to this movement can be found in the Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD), which uses dimensions of personality functioning, coupled with identification of dominant pathological traits, to define and classify personality disorders. By applying psychodynamic object relations theory to the AMPD, therapists can enrich the understanding and assessment of personality functioning and pathology as described in the
