Paranoia and narcissism in psychoanalytic theory. Contributions of self psychology to the theory and therapy of the paranoid disorders.

Many factors go into a choice of a therapeutic focus: the patient's psychopathology; the therapist's training, countertransference reactions, and ideological beliefs; and, importantly, a decision about what seems most amenable to treatment and change. As a theory, self psychology describes one aspect of the paranoid process; as such, it is an incomplete theory that complements rather than invalidates more classical theories. As a technique, however, it suggests a style and focus conducive to working with paranoid patients, one that is markedly supportive, nonconfrontational, yet also interpret

A developmental approach to violence, hostile attributions, and paranoid thinking in adolescence.

Research within the area of paranoid thinking has focused primarily on adults and has only recently looked at the effects during the critical life stage of adolescence, with even less research in the context of the juvenile justice system. This article aims to explore the relationship between antisocial behaviour in adolescence and the development of paranoid thinking, set within wider contexts that surround the juvenile justice system. The information presented is drawn from both the current research and the clinical experiences of those working in adolescent forensic psychiatry services. The

The oral, obsessive, and hysterical personality syndromes. A study of hereditary and environmental factors by means of the twin method.

Lazare et al have demonstrated a factor structure similar to the oral, obsessive, and hysterical personality syndromes in a female patient population. The factor structure has been replicated in a sample of 99 predominantly "normal" females and male twin pairs. Furthermore, it was found that hysterical traits in female subjects and oral traits in male subjects seemed to have a genetic component. The study also indicated that environmental factors from an early age influence the development of the personality structure.

Electroconvulsive therapy in patients with trauma and personality disorders: what is the evidence?

INTRODUCTION: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is one the most effective interventions for treatment-resistant depression. There is a link between trauma history and the development of depression, and frequent comorbidity with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and personality disorders. The impact of comorbid trauma and personality disorders on the efficacy of ECT has attracted research interest, with the possibility raised for using ECT to target other core symptoms of these disorders. AREAS COVERED: In this scoping review, the authors describe the available evidence on the use of ECT in

A Scoring Procedure for Malignant Narcissism Based on Personality Inventory for DSM-5 Facets.

The current study focuses on the development and validation of a scoring procedure for malignant narcissism using the Personality Inventory for DSM-5, a self-report measure of Criterion B from the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders. In Study 1, a prototype matching approach was used to aggregate ratings from 15 clinicians specializing in personality disorder treatment and/or assessment. Indices of inter-rater agreement and inter-rater reliability revealed high convergence as to the most important maladaptive facets for malignant narcissism. The scoring procedure, based on additive cou

The effects of puberty on associations between mood/personality factors and disordered eating symptoms in girls.

OBJECTIVE: Negative and positive urgency, anxiety, and depressive symptoms are significant factors of disordered eating (DE) symptoms in early adolescence through young adulthood. However, it is unclear how puberty-a critical developmental milestone that is associated with increased risk for DE symptoms-affects the relationship between these factors and DE symptoms, given that the role of pubertal status has rarely been considered in relation to these associations. Thus, the present study examined whether puberty moderates associations between mood/personality factors and DE in pre-adolescent

Internet Addiction Disorder: Personality characteristics and risk of pathological overuse in adolescents.

AIM: Few studies have investigated Internet Addiction (IA) in adolescents in relation to personality characteristics. The aim of this study was to determine whether personality differences exist between adolescents with problematic/pathological Internet use and those with normal Internet use. Our hypothesis was that certain psychopathological personality traits may predispose to the development of maladaptive Internet use. METHODS: The Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent (MMPI-A) were administered to a sample of 224 high school students

[Differences in attachment and personality in children from child guidance centers, child psychiatry units, and control families].

Insecure attachment and deficits in self-regulation as personality traits are risk factors for the development of psychopathological symptoms from infancy on. This study examines differences in attachment and personality in late childhood, comparing children from non-clinical families, from a child guidance center, and child psychiatry units with in-patient care. Children's attachment representations, their attachment behavior strategy, reported distressing parental behavior, their emotional openness, and attachment coherency were assessed with the Late Childhood Attachment Interview (LCAI). Diffusion tensor imaging-based evaluation of white-matter tract alterations in schizophrenic patients with personality-related comorbidities.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia (SZ) is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder frequently accompanied by personality-related traits such as impulsivity and psychosis proneness. Emerging evidence implicates white matter (WM) dysconnectivity in the pathophysiology of SZ. This study aimed to evaluate microstructural alterations across key WM tracts using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and explore their associations with personality dimensions. We analyzed DTI data from 45 patients with SZ and 114 matched healthy controls from the UCLA Consortium for Neuropsychiatric Phenomics dataset. Depression and Personality Traits Across Adolescence-Within-Person Analyses of a Birth Cohort.

Depressive symptoms and personality traits covary in adolescents, but our understanding of the nature of this relation is limited. Whereas a predisposition explanation posits that specific personality traits increase the vulnerability for developing depression, a scar explanation proposes that depression may alter premorbid personality. Attempts to test these explanatory models have relied on analyses that conflate within-person changes and between-person differences, which limits the implications that can be drawn. Moreover, research on the early adolescent years is lacking. The present study

A New Perspective on "Drinking" Self: A Network Approach to Characterizing Drinking-Related Changes in Personality.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that self-knowledge, particularly perceptions of oneself as a "drinker," may influence the development and progression of alcohol use and related problems, such as binge drinking. While existing studies have provided empirical evidence for the importance of assessing drinking self-perception within the five-factor model of personality framework, further examination with novel analytic methods, such as network analyses, could improve understanding of the drinker self-concept. Methods: Five factor traits of openness to experience, conscientiousness, extrave

Self-critical perfectionism, dependency, and symptomatic distress in patients with personality disorder during hospitalization-based psychodynamic treatment: A parallel process growth modeling approach.

There is growing evidence for the efficacy and effectiveness of psychotherapy in patients with personality disorder (PD), but very little is known about the factors underlying these effects. Two-polarities models of personality development provide an empirically supported approach to studying therapeutic change. Briefly, these models argue that personality pathology is characterized by an imbalance between development of the capacity for self-definition and for relatedness, with an exaggerated emphasis on issues regarding self-definition and relatedness being expressed in high levels of self-c…

Psychiatric disorders associated with risk for the development of eating disorders during adolescence and early adulthood.

Longitudinal data were used to investigate whether anxiety, depressive, disruptive, personality, or substance use disorders are associated with risk for the development of eating disorders during adolescence or early adulthood. Psychiatric disorders were assessed among 726 youths from a random community sample during adolescence and early adulthood. Depressive disorders during early adolescence were associated with elevated risk for the onset of eating disorders, dietary restriction, purging behavior, and recurrent weight fluctuations after preexisting eating problems and other psychiatric dis

Factors Affecting Communication Outcomes for Deaf and Multilingual Learners: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children who are exposed to more than one spoken language can be described as deaf and multilingual learners (DMLs). Increased globalisation and technological advancements in hearing amplification mean an increasing number of children who are DHH access more than one spoken language (with and without the presence of signed languages). A growing body of evidence suggests that DMLs can develop competency in more than one spoken language. However, critical evaluation of factors contributing to positive outcomes appears limited. AIMS: The purpose of this
