Work addiction and personality organization: Results from a representative, three-wave longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have explored the relationship between personality and work addiction, suggesting that individuals with certain mental disorders, including personality disorders such as obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), may be more prone to work addiction. However, the characterization of personality organization (PO) among workaholics and its contribution to the persistence of work addiction remains unclear. METHODS: In this longitudinal study of a representative sample of young adults (N = 1748), we applied the Bergen Work Addiction Scale and the Inventory of Per

Developmental trajectories of Big Five personality traits among adolescents and young adults: Differences by sex, alcohol use, and marijuana use.

OBJECTIVE: Individual differences in adolescent personality are related to a variety of long-term health outcomes. While previous studies have demonstrated sex differences and non-linear changes in personality development, these results remain equivocal. The current study utilized longitudinal data (n = 831) from the National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence to examine sex differences in the development of personality and the association between substance use and personality. METHOD: Participants (ages 12-21 at baseline) completed the Ten-Item Personality Inventory an…

The relationship between childhood adversity and adult personality revealed by network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity is known to influence personality development. Studies suggest that distinct types of childhood adversities have differential effects on personality dimensions. However, different types of adversity often co-occur, and personality dimensions are strongly interconnected. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to use a network approach to analyze the interrelationships between different types of childhood adversity and diverse personality dimensions integratively. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: We used previously collected data on 142 alcohol dependent patients and 102

Trichotillomania and personality traits from the five-factor model.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether personality traits have predictive validity for trichotillomania (TTM) diagnosis, pulling severity and control, and hair pulling style. METHODS: In study 1, logistic regression was used with TTM cases (n=54) and controls (n=25) to determine if NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) personality domains predicted TTM case vs. control classification. In study 2, hierarchical multiple regression was used with TTM cases (n=164) to determine whether NEO-FFI personality domains predicted hair pulling severity and control as well as focused and automatic pulling styles. Typus melancholicus personality type and the five-factor model of personality.

Personality traits are significant factors in the development and course of depression. Apart from the classical five-factor model of personality, other personality constellations, such as Tellenbach's Typus melancholicus, have been described in association with depressive disorder. Several instruments have been developed to assess the Typus melancholicus personality (TMP). A systematic comparison of these instruments has not been done to date. The goal of this study was the comparison of four questionnaires used in assessing TMP. Four TMP questionnaires were compared and their relationship to

Narcissism and anger: an exploration of underlying correlates.

Many have posited that narcissistic individuals are sensitive to insults and prone to react to such criticism with anger and hostility. Given that such anger is provoked by criticism from others, it was hypothesized that narcissistic traits which relate to perceived position of authority or superiority and an inflated sense of entitlement would make it easier for someone to perceive a remark as threatening and feel angry. It was hypothesized that these aspects of narcissism, as measured by the subscales of the Narcissistic Personality Inventory by Raskin and Hall would correlate differentially…

Evaluating personality pathological profiles in temporal lobe epilepsy and functional seizures according to DSM-5 alternative model for personality disorders.

The 5th version of DSM introduced an Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD), which conceptualizes personality pathology as result of impairments in personality functioning and maladaptive personality traits. As well-known, personality disorders represent a common psychiatric comorbidity in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) and Functional Seizures (FS). This study aims to characterize personality pathology in these populations according to DSM-5 AMPD using the Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Brief Form 2.0 and Personality Inventory for DSM-5. Furthermore, association between patho…

A Bridge Between DSM-5 Section II Personality Disorder Criteria and ICD-11 Personality Disorder Trait Domains.

The organization of personality pathology into trait domains (vs. specific disorders) in ICD-11 represents an important shift in personality disorder (PD) nosology. However, to facilitate clinical implementation, a bridge is needed between this system and the DSM-5 Section II system familiar to many researchers and clinicians. In this study, individual DSM-5 PD criteria were assigned to ICD-11 trait domains based on the published Clinical Descriptions and Diagnostic Requirements. This scoring scheme was examined empirically alongside DSM-5 PD dimensions (using SIDP ratings from the MIDAS proje

Internet-Related Disorders and Their Effects on Personality Development in Adolescents from Germany-Results from a Prospective Study.

Internet-related disorders (IRD) are increasingly becoming a major health issue. IRD are defined as the predominant use of online content, related to a loss of control and continued use despite negative consequences. Despite findings from cross-sectional studies, the causality of pathways accelerating the development of IRD are unclear. While etiological models emphasize the role of personality as risk factor, mutual influences between IRD and personality have not been examined. A prospective study with two assessments was conducted with n = 941 adolescents (mean age of 13.1 years; 10-17 years

Impact of personality functioning and pathological traits on mental wellbeing of older patients with personality disorders.

BACKGROUND: Although personality disorders are common and consequential, they are largely ignored in geriatric mental healthcare. We examined the relative contributions of different aspects of personality disorders and comorbid mental disorders to the impairment of mental wellbeing in older adults. METHODS: Baseline data were used of 138 patients who participated in a randomized controlled trial on schema therapy for geriatric mental health outpatients with a full or subthreshold cluster B or C personality disorder. Personality was assessed according to both the categorical and dimensional mo

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition alternative model of personality disorder.

The fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) includes within a section for emerging measures and models an alternative model of personality disorder (AMPD). This article provides a brief overview of its development, noting, in particular, issues and controversies. The article concludes with a discussion of and recommendations for further research in regard to 8 issues: (a) whether the DSM-5 AMPD offers any incremental validity over DSM-IV with respect to the validity or clinical

Should the demonstration of improved patient outcome be necessary to overhaul diagnostic approaches?: Comment on Bach and Tracy (2022).

I will argue in this commentary that it is premature to change the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition approach toward diagnosing personality disorders to the alternative model for personality disorders (AMPD) because such a change in determining personality pathology will be disruptive, and such a disruption is warranted only when it can be demonstrated that patient outcomes are better. I briefly review studies comparing unstructured clinical evaluations with semistructured interviews for symptom disorders, and these studies have found that there is a high rat

Personality traits as predictors of OCD remission: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Personality traits may confer vulnerability to psychopathology. However, few studies have examined the association between personality traits and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) course. The present study investigates personality traits, OCD symptom severity, and illness duration as a predictor of OCD remission. METHODS: 166 treatment-seeking adults with OCD, recruited as part of the Brown Longitudinal Obsessive-Compulsive Study, completed the NEO Five-Factor Inventory 3 (NEO-FFI) and were in episode for OCD at time of NEO-FFI completion. Participants were followed for up to 3

Prosociality in personality disorders: Status quo and research agenda.

Personality disorders (PDs) are characterized by interpersonal dysfunction and deficits in prosociality are theorized to contribute to this. We review studies linking categorical PDs to prosocial and antagonistic traits and highlight studies that assessed prosocial behavior in PDs via economic games. We structure our review based on the recently proposed affordance framework of prosocial behavior, summarizing the evidence for exploitation, reciprocity, temporal conflict, and dependence under uncertainty as situational affordances that allow the expression of personality in prosocial behavior.

More is more: Evidence for the incremental value of the SCID-II/SCID-5-PD specific factors over and above a general personality disorder factor.

Currently, 3 competing conceptualizations of personality dysfunction can be distinguished: the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) categorical model delineating 10 distinct types of personality disorders (PDs); the alternative model for PDs (DSM-5 Section III), which assesses personality functioning and traits separately; and the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Version conceptualization, which provides 1 single code for the presence of a PD (which is based on problems in functioning) as well as codes that specify the level of the disorder

Personality characteristics and disorders in multiple sclerosis patients: assessment and treatment.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a major inflammatory and demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. Although a significant incidence and prevalence of psychological disorders in MS has been reported there is limited data on the prevalence of personality disorders (PD) in these patients. Recent findings indicate the need for early diagnosis and treatment of PD in MS patients in the interests of prognosis, conformity to treatment and patient's quality of life improvement. This article summarizes existing evidence on prevalence, types and diagnostic criteria of PD in MS, clinical manifestati
