Diagnosis of personality disorders in learning disability.

BACKGROUND: Though contentious, the diagnosis of personality disorders in persons with learning disability is clinically relevant because it affects many aspects of management. AIMS: To examine published literature on the diagnosis of personality disorders in learning disability. METHOD: Selective review with computerised (Medline, Embase and PsychInfo) and manual literature searches. RESULTS: The variation in the co-occurrence of personality disorder in learning disability, with prevalence ranging from less than 1% to 91% in a community setting and 22% to 92% in hospital settings, is very

Psychological profile of the atopic eczema patient.

A survey of 40 patients with long-standing atopic eczema was carried out to test for the presence of certain psychological traits which had been reported in studies in earlier decades. A series of standardised personality tests was administered to these patients and the results compared with the findings for a normal group for each test. It was demonstrated that atopic eczema patients do have significantly high levels of anxiety and problems in dealing with anger and hostility. Whether such findings make any contribution to understanding the aetiology of this disorder is debatable, but they do…

[Correlation of computer tomographic findings and psychologic test results in patients with craniocerebral injury].

102 Patients with severe head injuries were examined using computed tomography and psychological tests in the rehabilitation phase. Significant correlations were found between the psychological test results on the one hand and cortical atrophia demonstrated by computed tomography as well as the transverse diameter of the third ventricle on the other. The index of cella media and the contusions of differing localisation did not show any significant correlation with the psychologic test results. Professional re-integration could be most clearly placed in relation to the duration of disease, the

Statistical power and parameter stability when subjects are few and tests are many: comment on Peterson, Smith, Martorana, and Owens (2003).

Comments on the original article "The impact of chief executive officer personality on top management team dynamics: One mechanism by which leadership affects organizational performance", by R. S. Peterson et al.. This comment illustrates how small sample sizes, when combined with many statistical tests, can generate unstable parameter estimates and invalid inferences. Although statistical power for 1 test in a small-sample context is too low, the experimentwise power is often high when many tests are conducted, thus leading to Type I errors that will not replicate when retested. The Association between Personality Factors and Metabolic Parameters among Patients with Non-Alcoholic-Fatty Liver Disease and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus-A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) states a serious problem for public health. The introduction of effective methods of treatment and prevention is crucial to avoid complications of these diseases. Among them, we can specify psychological factors that affect everyday life and determine the patient's attitude towards therapy, and what follows, their compliance in treatment. The literature indicates these connections in various ways; in our study, we extend this view to include a broader perspective of human pers

Effects of video exposure to cluttering on undergraduate students' perceptions of a person who clutters.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests a negative stereotype toward people with fluency disorders (i.e. stuttering and/or cluttering), although recent findings suggest that exposure to an actual person who stutters (e.g. a live or video presentation) leads to more positive perceptions of some personality traits. However, there is a paucity of research examining perceptions of a person who clutters and whether these perceptions can be modified via video exposure to cluttering. AIMS: To examine the effects of video exposure to cluttering on university students' perceptions of a person who clutt

The Role of Gender, Child Maltreatment, Alcohol Expectancies, and Personality Pathology on Relationship Violence Among Undergraduates.

Male (n = 1,104) and female (n = 1,337) college students' self-report surveys on childhood maltreatment, alcohol expectancies, and narcissistic personality traits are examined to determine their associations with relationship violence. Intimate partner violence was measured using the violence subscales of the revised Conflict Tactics. Because we were interested in the effects of gender and because z tests of the correlations and t tests of means indicated men and women differed significantly on several variables, ordinary least squares regression models were run separately for men and women. Differential linguistic patterns across Rorschach, TAT, and SCT in individuals with PTSD.

Background: While prior studies have examined linguistic markers of PTSD using everyday discourse or autobiographical narratives, comparative studies identifying specific markers across different projective personality tests remain limited. Objective: To investigate whether language features in projective personality tests differentiate individuals with PTSD from non-PTSD controls and assess their predictive value for symptom severity.Method: Verbatim transcripts from 283 participants (183 PTSD, 100 controls) across the Rorschach, TAT, and SCT were analysed using NLP across six categories: nega…

Personality Traits and Illness Acceptance in Patients with Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease: A Cross-Sectional Study from Poland.

Background: Illness acceptance is a key psychological factor shaping adjustment to chronic disease, and personality traits are among its established correlates. Whether the diagnostic context-oncological versus cardiovascular disease-moderates the relationship between personality and illness acceptance remains insufficiently studied. This study examined associations between the Big Five personality traits (NEO-FFI) and illness acceptance (AIS) in patients with cancer and cardiovascular disease, and tested whether diagnosis moderates these associations. Methods: A cross-sectional study was cond

Psychological factors associated with failure of detoxification treatment in chronic headache associated with medication overuse.

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychological factors associated with a negative outcome following detoxification in a 2-month follow-up in medication-overuse headache. METHODS: All consecutive patients entering the detoxification program were analysed in a prospective, non-randomised fashion. Psychiatric conditions and personality characteristics were assessed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Disorders (SCID-I) and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI)-2. χ2 tests, one-way analyses of variance, and odds ratios (ORs) were used. RESULTS: A tot

Personality traits and individual differences predict threat-induced changes in postural control.

This study explored whether specific personality traits and individual differences could predict changes in postural control when presented with a height-induced postural threat. Eighty-two healthy young adults completed questionnaires to assess trait anxiety, trait movement reinvestment (conscious motor processing, movement self-consciousness), physical risk-taking, and previous experience with height-related activities. Tests of static (quiet standing) and anticipatory (rise to toes) postural control were completed under low and high postural threat conditions. Personality traits and individ

Evaluation of psychical state of the engine room crew members of a long period of service at sea.

The work was made to find the traits of personality in the engine room crew members of a long occupational experience, which alleviate or aggravate their process of adaptation to the conditions of work at sea. The goal of investigation was to answer the question whether and if so then to what extent neurotic and psychopathic disturbances are negatively select in the scope of their occupational adaptation. 270 seafarers were subjected to examinations performed by means of the following tests: MMPI, Behaviour Examination Patterns, Social Readjustment Rating Scale, Scale of Psychical Load with wo

Evidence for a severe cognitive subgroup in a comprehensive neuropsychological Post-COVID-19 syndrome classification.

Approximately 7% of adults develop Post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS). Cognitive impairment is common, but its profile in PCS is not well defined and requires clearer differentiation from general (post-)illness effects. The aim of this study was to identify distinct cognitive profiles in PCS and to characterize them with respect to broader psychological factors such as fatigue, depression, anxiety, and personality. To this end, we assessed cognition, fatigue, depression, anxiety, and personality traits in PCS patients, convalescents (CV), healthy controls (HC), and post-viral syndrome patients (PV)

Omega-3 Supplementation Reduces Schizotypal Personality in Children: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Based on a childhood intervention from ages 3 to 5 years that included additional fish consumption and which resulted in reduced schizotypal personality at age 23, we had previously hypothesized that omega-3 could reduce schizotypy. The current study tests the hypothesis that omega-3 supplementation reduces schizotypy in children. STUDY DESIGN: In this intention-to-treat, randomized, single-blind, stratified, factorial trial, a community sample of 290 children aged 11-12 years were randomized into Omega-3 Only, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Only, Omega-3 + CBT,

Exploring the role of affective temperaments: predicting major depressive disorder in the context of borderline personality disorder.

PURPOSE: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a complex condition believed to arise from a multifaceted interplay of genetic, environmental, and biological factors. In the pursuit of understanding its etiology, two elements that warrant investigation are borderline personality disorder (BPD) and affective temperaments. We aim to gain deeper insights into the mechanisms underlying this debilitating mental health condition. METHOD: The dataset comprises individuals who sought assistance from psychiatry outpatient clinics for diverse reasons during the period spanning from 2018 to 2022. These indi

Effects of Personality Traits on the Severity of Chronic Subjective Tinnitus: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Background and Objectives: We hypothesized that an individual's personality traits would have an impact on the distress of subjective tinnitus. To investigate this, 32 participants were recruited; we followed up with this cohort. This study is a cross-sectional analysis of a part of this cohort, identifying how their personality traits make a difference in the severity of tinnitus distress. Materials and Methods: Thirty-two participants completed a personality test based on the Big Five theory, consisting of 160 items. Additionally, the severity of tinnitus was assessed using the Tinnitus Hand

Patterns of admission in forensic units during the COVID-19 pandemic: a process analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on forensic service practice remains matter of debate. Increased rates of anxiety, depression, and exacerbation of psychotic symptoms were reported in the early phases of the pandemic among detained persons. However, longitudinal analyses in medium-security hospitals taking into account the whole pandemic period led to mitigated results. METHODS: This report examines the evolution of the type (voluntary versus involuntary) and reason of admissions, length of stay, history of outpatient care, short-term seclusion hours for aggressive behaviors, and

Executive functions and borderline personality features in adolescents with major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Executive functions (EF) consolidate during adolescence and are impaired in various emerging psychiatric disorders, such as pediatric Major Depressive Disorder (pMDD) and Borderline Personality Disorder. Previous studies point to a marked heterogeneity of deficits in EF in pMDD. We examined the hypothesis that deficits in EF in adolescents with pMDD might be related to comorbid Borderline Personality features (BPF). METHODS: We examined a sample of 144 adolescents (15.86 ± 1.32) diagnosed with pMDD. Parents rated their child's EF in everyday life with the Behavior Rating Inventory
