Efficacy and Safety of the Preserflo® Microshunt as a Standalone Procedure Versus Its Combination with Phacoemulsification.

Background/Objectives: Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness, and lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) is the only proven strategy to slow disease progression. The Preserflo® Microshunt (PMS) is a minimally invasive subconjunctival drainage device used to treat uncontrolled glaucoma. Given that cataracts and glaucoma often coexist, this study aimed to compare the 12-month efficacy and safety of PMS implanted as a standalone procedure versus combined with phacoemulsification (PCE). Methods: This single-center retrospective case-control study included 104 eyes (26 PMS + PCE; 78 st…

Monochromatic Phacoemulsification: An Approach for Eyes With Impaired Red Reflex Secondary to Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy.

Phacoemulsification requires good visualization of the lens components, which can be challenging during combined vitrectomy. We discuss using the monochrome filter of the NGENUITY® visualization system (Alcon Laboratories, Fort Worth, Texas, United States) for phacoemulsification in complex cases with diminished red reflex, associated with proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Phacoemulsification and 25-gauge vitrectomy were performed by a single surgeon on 12 eyes of 12 consecutive patients with compromised red reflexes, using the 3D digitally assisted visualization system NGENUITY® with a mono…

The effect of cooled irrigation fluid on post-phacoemulsification dry eye and corneal endothelium parameters.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Corneal oedema and dry eye symptoms following phacoemulsification are major determinants of early postoperative satisfaction. Strategies that protect the ocular surface and minimize endothelial stress during phacoemulsification are therefore of clinical importance. BACKGROUND: To evaluate the effect of using cooled Balanced Salt Solution as an irrigation fluid during phacoemulsification on postoperative dry eye findings and corneal endothelial function. METHOD: In this prospective study, Group 1 consisted of 114 cataract patients who underwent phacoemulsification with the…

Comparative effectiveness of toric IOLs and LRIs for correction of moderate regular astigmatism during phacoemulsification.

Corneal astigmatism frequently coexists with age-related cataract and may impair uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) if not addressed during surgery. Limbal relaxing incisions (LRI) and toric intraocular lenses (toric IOL) are two common methods for astigmatism correction, but evidence comparing their effectiveness in patients with moderate regular astigmatism remains limited. A prospective study was conducted at Yuyao Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital between January and December 2024. Ninety-three patients aged 55-80 years with moderate regular corneal astigmatism undergoing cat
