Functional magnetic resonance imaging has revealed a set of regions selectively engaged in visual scene processing: the parahippocampal place area (PPA), the retrosplenial complex (RSC), and a region around the transverse occipital sulcus (previously known as "TOS"), here renamed the "occipital place area" (OPA). Are these regions not only preferentially activated by, but also causally involved in scene perception? Although past neuropsychological data imply a causal role in scene processing for PPA and RSC, no such evidence exists for OPA. Thus, to test the causal role of OPA in human adults,

Audiovisual speech perception was studied in adults with Asperger syndrome (AS), by utilizing the McGurk effect, in which conflicting visual articulation alters the perception of heard speech. The AS group perceived the audiovisual stimuli differently from age, sex and IQ matched controls. When a voice saying /p/ was presented with a face articulating /k/, the controls predominantly heard /k/. Instead, the AS group heard /k/ and /t/ with almost equal frequency, but with large differences between individuals. There were no differences in gaze direction or unisensory perception between the AS an

BACKGROUND: The subthalamic nucleus (STN) is an efficient target for treating patients with Parkinson's disease as well as patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) using high frequency stimulation (HFS). In both Parkinson's disease and OCD patients, STN-HFS can trigger abnormal behaviours, such as hypomania and impulsivity.
METHODS: To investigate if this structure processes emotional information, and whether it depends on motor demands, we recorded subthalamic local field potentials in 16 patients with Parkinson's disease using deep brain stimulation electrodes. Recordings were made

The authors evaluated the effects of matched and unmatched stimuli on immediate and subsequent engagement in targeted vocal stereotypy (Experiment 1) and untargeted motor stereotypy (Experiment 2). Results of Experiment 1 showed that (a) matched stimulation decreased immediate engagement in vocal stereotypy for 8 of 11 participants and increased subsequent engagement in vocal stereotypy for only 1 of the 8 participants and (b) unmatched stimulation decreased immediate engagement in vocal stereotypy for only 1 of 10 participants and did not increase subsequent engagement in vocal stereotypy for

Increased, decreased or normal excitability to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been reported in the motor (M1) and visual cortices of patients with migraine. Light deprivation (LD) has been reported to modulate M1 excitability in control subjects (CS). Still, effects of LD on M1 excitability compared to exposure to environmental light exposure (EL) had not been previously described in patients with migraine (MP). To further our knowledge about differences between CS and MP, regarding M1 excitability and effects of LD on M1 excitability, we opted for a novel approach by extending me

This study investigated the effects of stimulus presentation modality on working memory performance in children with reading disabilities (RD) and in typically developing children (TDC), all native speakers of Greek. It was hypothesized that the visual presentation of common objects would result in improved learning and recall performance as compared to the auditory presentation of stimuli. Twenty children, ages 10-12, diagnosed with RD were matched to 20 TDC age peers. The experimental tasks implemented a multitrial verbal learning paradigm incorporating three modalities: auditory, visual, an

The neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) is implicated in the pathophysiology of central nervous system (CNS) illnesses including Parkinson's disease, attention deficit disorder, schizophrenia, and substance abuse. A better understanding of CNS DA function would be of importance in improving our understanding of these conditions. Several lines of evidence suggest that exploring visual system function may be a useful paradigm for examining DA function. Clinical and basic science findings suggest that the visual response to blue light might prove a useful assay of CNS DA tone. To test this hypothesis,

We evaluated consecutive stroke patients with an acute, unilateral lesion, in order to elucidate the anatomical correlates and the clinical course of sensory extinction phenomenon as well as its relation with unilateral spatial neglect (USN) and anosognosia for hemiplegia (AHP). Subjects consisted of 76 patients with right cerebral hemispheric lesions (RHL) and 43 with left cerebral hemispheric lesions (LHL). Twelve of 76 patients with RHL and 18 of 43 patients with LHL were excluded from this study, because of consciousness disturbance, aphasia, severe sensory disturbance, hemianopia, or seve

Two subjects with narcoleptic syndrome and three healthy volunteers underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging during the simultaneous presentation of periodic auditory and visual stimuli both before and after administration of amphetamine. The effect of amphetamine in control subjects was a small reduction in the extent of sensory-induced activation. In the narcoleptic subjects, amphetamine led to an increase in the extent of induced activation within primary and association sensory cortex.

The influence of noninvasive magnetic brain stimulation by a magnetic coil (MC) placed over the occiput on perception and correct reporting of a briefly presented set of 3 letters of the alphabet was examined in 15 patients with prolonged VEP latencies due to neuritis of the optic nerve. The results derived from observing these patients were compared to the results obtained from an age-matched control group of 20 healthy voluntary subjects examined under the same experimental conditions. In both groups it was possible to demonstrate that transcranial magnetic stimulation is able to suppress re

In alert rabbits, pulse stimulation of the visual cortex interfered with the formation of short latency responses in superior colliculus. The effect of visual cortex upon the superior colliculus function may have a phasic inhibitory character. Blockade of the RF adrenergic apparatus enhances the inhibitory effect, whereas stimulation of the RF by anodal current induces an opposite effect. The character of cortical influence upon the superior colliculus function seems to depend on initial functional state of cerebral unspecific systems.

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS), a non-invasive form of electrical brain stimulation, has shown potent therapeutic potential for a wide spectrum of conditions. How taVNS influences the characterization of motion sickness - a long mysterious syndrome with a polysymptomatic onset - remains unclear. Here, to examine taVNS-induced effects on brain function in response to motion-induced nausea, 64-channel electroencephalography (EEG) recordings from 42 healthy participants were analyzed; collected during nauseogenic visual stimulation concurrent with taVNS administration, i

Autonomic responses to sensory stimuli are altered in autism, yet little is known about how multisensory input modulates these responses. This study examined whether auditory stimuli affect the pupil light reflex (PLR), a parasympathetically driven response to light, in autistic and non-autistic children. Pupillometry was used to measure responses to visual-only (V), auditory-only (A), and audiovisual (AV) stimuli in 72 children aged 8-14 years (34 non-autistic, 38 autistic). We hypothesized that auditory input would attenuate pupil constriction in non-autistic children in the AV condition and

Research indicates that the anterior temporal lobes (ATLs) in the left and right hemispheres constitute a supramodal hub for verbal and nonverbal semantic information. However, it remains unclear whether (1) left and right ATLs are respectively specialized for verbal and nonverbal semantic processing (functional specialization models) or (2) bilateral ATLs equally contribute to multimodal semantic processing (unitary "hub-and-spoke" models). The present study examined the question using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) with an implicit semantic priming paradigm minimizing to

The functional organization of the teleost telencephalic pallium remains poorly understood, particularly regarding the presence of modality-specific sensory domains and their topographic arrangement. Here, we used in vivo wide-field voltage-sensitive dye imaging to map sensory-evoked neural activity across the dorsal surface of the telencephalic pallium of adult goldfish. Somatosensory, auditory, gustatory, and visual stimulation revealed distinct, modality-specific domains located within the dorsomedial (Dm) and dorsolateral (Dl) pallium, that closely matched cytoarchitectural boundaries. Eye movement-related eardrum oscillations (EMREOs) reflect movements of the tympanic membrane that scale with the magnitude and direction of saccades. EMREOs have been consistently described in humans and non-human primates, yet many questions regarding this phenomenon remain unresolved. Based on bilateral in-ear recordings in human participants we here explore several properties of these EMREOs in order to improve our understanding of this signal's origin and functional significance. Our data support that the EMREO time course is comparable between the left and right ears, and between paradig

Evading imminent threat from predators is critical for animal survival. Effective defensive strategies can vary, even between closely related species. However, the neural basis of such species-specific behaviours remains poorly understood1-4. Here we find that two sister species of deer mice (genus Peromyscus)5 show different responses to the same looming stimulus: Peromyscus maniculatus, which occupies densely vegetated habitats, predominantly escapes, whereas the open field specialist, Peromyscus polionotus, briefly freezes. This difference arises from species-specific escape thresholds, is

The mammalian neocortex, organized into six cellular layers or laminae, forms a cortical network within layers. Layer-specific computations are crucial for sensory processing of visual stimuli within the primary visual cortex. Laminar recordings of local field potentials (LFPs) are a powerful tool to study neural activity within cortical layers. Electric brain stimulation is widely used in basic neuroscience and in a large range of clinical applications. However, the layer-specific effects of electric stimulation on LFPs remain unclear. To address this gap, we recorded laminar LFP from capuchi

Cross-modal prediction serves a crucial adaptive role in the multisensory world, yet the neural mechanisms underlying this prediction are poorly understood. The present study addressed this important question by combining a novel audiovisual sequence memory task, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and multivariate neural representational analyses. Our behavioral results revealed a reliable asymmetric cross-modal predictive effect, with a stronger prediction from visual to auditory (VA) modality than auditory to visual (AV) modality. Mirroring the behavioral pattern, we found the sup
