Pilot study of a nonpharmacological intervention for delirium superimposed on dementia.

Delirium is a common neuropsychiatric syndrome that occurs most frequently in older adults with dementia and is referred to as delirium superimposed on dementia (DSD). Our aim in this pilot project was to demonstrate that implementation of cognitively stimulating activities is clinically feasible and has potential to reduce delirium severity and duration and functional loss in post-acute care settings. We randomized newly admitted participants with DSD to treatment (n = 11) and control (n = 5) conditions and conducted daily blinded assessments of delirium, delirium severity, and functional sta

Effect of desquamative gingivitis on periodontal status: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Desquamative gingivitis (DG) represents the gingival manifestation associated with several mucocutaneous disorders and systemic conditions. Little is known of whether or not DG could influence the onset or progression of plaque-related periodontitis. In this study, the potential impact of DG on plaque-related attachment loss and pocket formation has been evaluated. METHODS: A cross-sectional evaluation of 12 patients with DG [eight oral lichen planus (OLP), four mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP)], never treated for DG lesions or plaque-related periodontitis, was carried out. Probing

Tourette's syndrome: a pilot study for the discontinuance of a movement disorder.

For a century and a half, Tourette's syndrome (TS) has been a mystery to the medical profession with physicians believing that it was a psychological disorder, then a neurological brain disorder, and then, an infectious disease caused by streptococcus. What was never considered was that this disorder called Tourette's was due to a structural deformity which would manifest itself as a neurological problem. What has been discovered is that Tourette's syndrome is neither psychological, infectious, genetic or environmental in origin, but is what we have termed a structural-reflex disorder, and hav

A pilot study of a new test to predict extubation failure.

INTRODUCTION: To determine whether subjecting patients to 100 ml of additional dead space after a 120-minute weaning trial could predict readiness for extubation. METHODS: This was a prospective, non-randomised pilot study in an intensive care unit at a university hospital with 14 beds. It included all non-tracheostomised patients with improvement of the underlying cause of acute respiratory failure, and those with no need for vasoactive or sedative drugs were eligible. Patients fulfilling the Consensus Conference on Weaning extubation criteria after 120 minutes spontaneous breathing (n = 152

A pilot survey of the impact of menstrual cycles on adolescent health.

BACKGROUND: The experience of menstruation and reproductive health by adolescent girls has been poorly studied in New Zealand. AIMS: To develop and pilot a Web-based survey of 16-year-olds' experience of menstruation and reproductive health with the eventual objective of conducting a larger population-based survey. A secondary aim was to report on the experience of menstrual and reproductive health in a group of 16-year-old girls in an urban setting. METHODS: A Web-based survey was developed and tested in 2006 with assistance of a multidisciplinary advisory group. The final version of the qu

Cognitive training for divergent thinking in schizophrenia: a pilot study.

Individuals with schizophrenia demonstrate deficits in divergent thinking. This ability is indispensable for generating creative solutions and navigating the complexities of social interactions. In a pilot study, seventeen stable schizophrenia outpatients were randomly assigned to a training program for divergent thinking or a control program on convergent thinking. After eight weeks of training, participants in the divergent thinking program had significantly greater improvements on measures of idea fluency, negative symptoms, and interpersonal relations than did participants receiving the co

Androgen replacement therapy in Turner syndrome: a pilot study.

CONTEXT: Women with Turner syndrome (TS) have reduced levels of androgens due to ovarian failure. HYPOTHESES: Morbidity associated with TS, such as bone fragility, metabolic changes, obesity, neurocognitive profile, and sexual problems may partly relate to androgen insufficiency and improve on androgen replacement therapy (ART). OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to determine the effect of androgens on morbidity in TS. DESIGN: Fourteen TS women (aged 17-27 yr) participated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover pilot. The study was conducted in a hospital outpat

Pilot study of a personalized feedback intervention for problem gamblers.

A pilot study was conducted of a personalized feedback intervention for problem gamblers. Respondents (N=61) were recruited from an ongoing gambling research study to take part in another study to help us "develop and evaluate self-help materials for gamblers." Respondents were randomly assigned to receive a personalized feedback summary or to a waiting list control. At 3-month follow-up (80.3% follow-up rate, N=49), after controlling for baseline demographic characteristics and gambling severity, respondents in the feedback condition displayed some evidence that they were spending less money

Unrecognised cognitive impairment in hospice patients: a pilot study.

The presence of cognitive impairment in patients who are receiving hospice care can affect numerous practical, ethical and legal aspects of their healthcare. A number of factors can contribute to cognitive impairment in these patients. Prevalence rates of cognitive impairment vary widely, but it remains under-recognised and under-treated. The aims of this pilot study were to evaluate the presence and nature of cognitive deficits in patients receiving inpatient hospice care who did not have a known current or past diagnosis of a cognitive disorder or any obvious cognitive impairments. A conveni

Do mood disorders alter crying? A pilot investigation.

Clinical commentators widely interpret crying as a sign of depressed mood. However, there is virtually no empirical data on this topic, and the evidence that mood disorders alter crying is surprisingly weak. This study compared mood disordered patients to a nonpsychiatric reference group on the frequency, antecedents, and consequences of crying behavior using a well-validated questionnaire measure of crying. Forty-four outpatients diagnosed with three forms of mood pathology were age and gender matched to a reference group of 132 participants sampled to be representative of the Dutch populatio

Mirror writing in pre-school children: a pilot study.

Mirror writing refers to the production of individual letters, whole words or sentences in reverse direction. Unintentional mirror writing has been observed in young children learning to write and interpreted as the manifestation of different cognitive impairments. We report on mirror writing instances in a sample of 108 pre-school children. Results showed MW to be age-related but independent from handedness and left-right discrimination abilities. We propose an account of mirror writing as reflecting dissociation between acquired motor programmes for letter shape composition and unspecified s

Histological alterations following bariatric surgery: pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Macroscopic clinical evidence of tissue damaging following bariatric surgery pushed plastic surgeons to presume microscopic alterations as well. METHODS: Five preliminary cases studied randomly, and compared with healthy tissues, confirmed these initial suspects. A deeper and wider study has then been structured. RESULTS: Preliminary results are so evident to encourage us to carry on an estimated 2-3 years multidisciplinary study. CONCLUSIONS: What we want to study is if histological post-bariatric alterations are confirmed, and if these can be considered responsible for higher
