Differences in platelet monoamine oxidase activity in subgroups of schizophrenic and depressive disorders.

Platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity was measured in patients with nonaffective schizophrenic disorders (i.e., without prominent symptoms of depressions or manias), and in patients with schizophrenia-related depressions. MAO activity was significantly lower than control values in a subgroup of 16 patients with nonaffective schizophrenic disorders (most of whom were paranoid) characterized by the presence of auditory hallucinations and delusions. Platelet MAO activity was not reduced in 16 other nonaffective schizophrenic patients without auditory hallucinations. Platelet MAO activity was

[Adenyl cyclase activity of human blood platelets in various blood diseases].

Adenyl cyclase activity was estimated in blood platelets of healthy persons and of patients with myeloleukosis, osteomyelofibrosis and with Glanzmann's thrombasthenia. Six-fold decrease in the adenyl cyclase activity from the platelets was observed in chronic myeloleukosis. The enzymatic activity in platelets was similar to normal level in osteomyelofibrosis and Glanzmann's thrombasthenia.

Therapeutic Potential of Platelet-Derived Growth Factor B-Modified Nanoparticles in Enhancing Pericyte Activation for Acute Ischemic Stroke.

Platelet-derived growth factor subunit B (PDGF-B) signaling plays a critical role in pericyte activation and neurovascular repair following ischemic injury. Although enhancing PDGF-B signaling in pericytes represents a promising therapeutic strategy for ischemic stroke, practical approaches have not yet been developed. In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic efficacy and underlying mechanisms of PDGF-B-modified heat shock protein nanoparticles (PDGF-B HSPNPs) in a transient middle cerebral artery occlusion mouse model of either sex. Mice were treated with single intravenous injection of PD

GP VI-Mediated Platelet Activation and Procoagulant Activity Aggravate Inflammation and Aortic Wall Remodeling in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.

BACKGROUND: Platelets play an important role in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a highly lethal, atherosclerosis-related disease with characteristic features of progressive dilatation of the abdominal aorta and degradation of the vessel wall, accompanied by chronic inflammation. Platelet activation and procoagulant activity play a decisive role in the AAA pathology as they might trigger AAA development in both mice and humans. METHODS: The present study investigated the impact of the major platelet collagen receptor GP (platelet glycoprotein) VI…

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus induces platelet activation and apoptosis via a reactive oxygen species-dependent pathway.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging tick-borne infectious disease caused by the SFTS virus (SFTSV) and with a … uced platelet clearance acceleration may be the main reason for thrombocytopenia. SFTSV-potentiated platelet activation and apoptosis were also observed in infected mice. Further investigation showed that SFTSV infection induced platelet reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and mitochondrial dysfunction. In vitro experiments revealed that administration of SFTSV …

The Outer Membrane Lipoprotein Tp0136 Stimulates Human Platelet Activation and Aggregation Through PAR1 to Enhance Gq/Gi Signaling.

BACKGROUND: Chancre self-healing, a typical clinical phenomenon of primary syphilis, is essentially wound healing. The first response to a wound is constriction of the injured blood vessels and activation of platelets to form a fibrin clot. However, the role of Treponema pallidum in platelet activation and clot formation remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to elucidate the role of the outer membrane Treponema pallidum lipoprotein Tp0136 in human platelet activation and aggregation and explore the related mechanism. METHODS: A series of experiments were performed to assess the effects of Tp…

GP IIb/IIIa-Mediated Platelet Activation and Its Modulation of the Immune Response of Monocytes Against Candida albicans.

Candida albicans is the most common fungal pathogen in humans, causing invasive disease and even potentially life-threatening systemic infections when tissue homeostasis is disrupted. Previous studies have identified an essential role of platelets in infection and immunity, especially when they are activated. However, it is still unclear whether platelets can be activated by C. albicans, and even less is known about the role of platelets in C. albicans infection. Herein, we showed that C. albicans induced platelet activation in vitro. C. albicans elevated the levels of AKT Ser473 phosphorylati…

Distinct phenotypes of platelet, monocyte, and neutrophil activation occur during the acute and convalescent phase of COVID-19.

SARS-CoV-2 has spread rapidly worldwide, causing the COVID-19 pandemic. Platelet activation and platelet-leukocyte complex formation are proposed to contribute to disease progression. Here, we report platelet and leukocyte activation during acute and convalescent COVID-19 in patients recruited between May-July 2020. Blood samples were analyzed by flow cytometry and ELISA using paired comparison between inclusion (day 0) and 28 days later. The majority of patients were mildly or moderately ill with significantly higher cytokine levels (IL-6 and IL-10) on day 0 as compared with day 28. Platelet …

Antiprothrombin antibodies induce platelet activation: A possible explanation for anti-FXa therapy failure in patients with antiphospholipid syndrome?

BACKGROUND: Arterial and venous thrombosis are both common in antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Recent studies have shown that anti-factor Xa (FXa) therapy in APS patients leads to a greater number of patients with arterial thrombosis than with warfarin. We hypothesize that this may be due to the lowering of prothrombin levels by warfarin. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether antiprothrombin antibodies induce platelet aggregation and to identify the platelet receptors involved. A second aim was to investigate the effect of reduced prothrombin levels on antiprothrombin antibody-induced platelet a

The potential role of endothelial dysfunction and platelet activation in the development of thrombotic risk in COPD patients.

Despite lack of knowledge in the field, several studies have underlined the role of endothelium dysfunction and platelet activation as significant players in the development and progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Indeed, endothelium plays a crucial role in vascular homeostasis and impairment, due to the inflammation process enhanced by smoking. Chronic inflammation and endothelial dysfunction have been proved to drive platelet activity. Consequently, thrombotic risk is enhanced in COPD, and might explain the higher percentage of cardiovascular death in such patients. …

Phage-Derived Protein Induces Increased Platelet Activation and Is Associated with Mortality in Patients with Invasive Pneumococcal Disease.

UNLABELLED: To improve our understanding about the severity of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), we investigated the association between the genotype of Streptococcus pneumoniae and disease outcomes for 349 bacteremic patients. A pneumococcal genome-wide association study (GWAS) demonstrated a strong correlation between 30-day mortality and the presence of the phage-derived gene pblB, encoding a platelet-binding protein whose effects on platelet activation were previously unknown. Platelets are increasingly recognized as key players of the innate immune system, and in sepsis, excessive plat…
