Reviewing the Evidence on Sibling Sexual Behaviour: Impact on Research, Policy and Practice.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This paper reviews recent research into sibling sexual behaviour (SSB). This is an emerging professional and community issue that binds together a limited evidence base across research, practice and policy in psychology, criminology, politics, social work and policy studies. The review will demonstrate that a multi-disciplinary, life course, family system approach is the most effective way of starting to develop interventions to prevent and respond to this issue. RECENT FINDINGS: SSB has previously been researched as a form of intrafamilial abuse or sibling incest. As a res

The Reverse Risk Register Approach to Understanding Systemic Factors in Risk Analysis and Management Case Studies.

Although recent developments have improved clarity on the characteristics of high-quality risk science, there is recognition that many of those characteristics relate to specific tasks taken by the risk analyst. However, the effectiveness of risk analysis and management often relies on both internal risk team activities and other external systemic factors. This article leverages reports on past risk events to develop new knowledge on systemic factors that have frequently appeared in connection with major risk events, including whistleblower dynamics, lack of accountability, financial aspects,

The Impact of Climate Change and Extreme Weather Conditions on Cardiovascular Health and Acute Cardiovascular Diseases.

Climate change is widely recognized as one of the most significant challenges facing our planet and human civilization. Human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, leading to a warming of the Earth's climate. The relationship between climate change and cardiovascular (CV) health, mediated by air pollution and increased ambient temperatures, is complex and very heterogeneous. The main mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of CV disease at extreme temperatures involve several regulatory pathways, inc

Reconceptualizing case management in theory and practice: a frontline perspective.

'Case management' in the health and social service sector is controversial, highly political and saturated with conflicting agendas among stakeholders. Research was conducted recently to explore the role of case managers in three evolving, Australian-based, long-term care, case management models. The findings have relevance to countries worldwide that contend with delivering quality care that is cost effective. The research captures the perspectives of 51 open-ended interviews with front-line case managers who have first-hand knowledge of the models' effect on their clients and on their own ro

The future of water fluoridation and other systemic fluorides.

School and community water fluoridation, salt fluoridation, and use of dietary fluoride supplements have abundant scientific support as effective caries-preventive methods. Because caries has declined greatly in many developed countries from use of topical fluorides, the absolute caries reduction will be considerably smaller when systemic fluoride methods are implemented now than it was 20 to 40 years ago. For countries with most of the population living in cities with communal water supplies, community fluoridation is the most logical approach from the standpoints of cost-effectiveness and to

Towards a coherent global health architecture: perspectives on integrating global health security and universal health coverage through diplomacy and governance reforms.

Within the global health landscape exists a complex interplay between global health security (GHS) and universal health coverage (UHC)-two influential agendas with profound influence on health system strengthening initiatives. There is a need to understand why and how coherence between GHS and UHC is being pursued in health policy and planning, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic which profoundly reshaped the field of global health and significant cuts to global health assistance. This paper presents one of the first detailed analyses of contemporary efforts to conceptualize and

Framing drug policy reform: Third-sector advocacy and the 2024 New South Wales Drug Summit.

BACKGROUND: Drug policy remains a politically and socially contested domain, with third-sector voices often marginalised despite their central role in advocacy and service delivery. The 2024 New South Wales (NSW) Drug Summit provided a rare, government-convened deliberative forum for third-sector organisations to contribute to state drug policy debate. This study examined how third-sector organisations framed drug policy issues and proposed solutions in advocacy documents produced in the lead-up to the summit and assessed the extent to which these frames were reflected in the summit's official

International migration of Africa-born health workers: a scoping review of drivers and policies, 2010-2024.

BACKGROUND: Africa faces a critical shortage of human resources for health (HRH), crucial for improving population health. We described drivers of and policies to manage the migration of Africa-born HRH from source (African) countries in Africa to destination (non-African) countries. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review, using the Arksey and O'Malley framework, using data from peer-reviewed articles (2010-2024) and gray literature from institutions like Africa Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO). We used push-pull theory to identify economic, professional,

Factors influencing the evaluation of psychological and psychosomatic reactions in survivors of the Nazi persecution.

Since the termination of World War II, Psychiatry has been challenged with the difficult task of the evaluation of the survivors of the Nazi persecution. The psychiatric sequelae of this era reflect direct connection between the different clinical manifestations and syndromes and the conglomeration of manifold physical and psychological traumas to which the survivors have been exposed, often during a prolonged period of time lasting through several years. The present paper examines the important but somehow neglected, and often intentionally avoided, issue: namely, the review of the problems a

Delivering interventions to reduce the global burden of stillbirths: improving service supply and community demand.

BACKGROUND: Although a number of antenatal and intrapartum interventions have shown some evidence of impact on stillbirth incidence, much confusion surrounds ideal strategies for delivering these interventions within health systems, particularly in low-/middle-income countries where 98% of the world's stillbirths occur. Improving the uptake of quality antenatal and intrapartum care is critical for evidence-based interventions to generate an impact at the population level. This concluding paper of a series of papers reviewing the evidence for stillbirth interventions examines the evidence for c

Building Health Equity Research Capacity in Myanmar Through a Virtual, Mentor-Based Training Program.

Background: In Myanmar, the COVID-19 pandemic and political unrest beginning in 2021 exacerbated longstanding health inequities and disrupted health services, universities, and research governance, rendering in-person research training infeasible when locally led health equity research was urgently needed. Objectives: To describe the design, implementation, and evaluation of a fully virtual, mentor-based health equity research training program in Myanmar. Methods: Supported by the Fogarty International Center/NIH, a one-year virtual training program integrated weekly virtual Zoom sessions, asy

Microwave radiofrequencies, 5G, 6G, graphene nanomaterials: Technologies used in neurological warfare.

BACKGROUND: Scientific literature, with no conflicts of interest, shows that even below the limits defined by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, microwaves from telecommunication technologies cause numerous health effects: neurological, oxidative stress, carcinogenicity, deoxyribonucleic acid and immune system damage, electro-hypersensitivity. The majority of these biological effects of non-thermal microwave radiation have been known since the 1970s. METHODS: Detailed scientific, political, and military documents were analyzed. Most of the scientific literature

Healthcare provision of transcatheter aortic valve implantation in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for aortic stenosis in older patients is the standard of care with a well-established supply density in Germany. In the near future, healthcare reform is planned that may affect TAVI capacities. Therefore, it is important to know how political regulations may interfere with access to services and what the need for TAVI will be in the future, based on demographic trends. METHODS: The number of TAVI procedures (DRG F98A +F98) and the in-hospital main diagnoses of aortic stenosis (ICD I35) in 2021 were analyzed at the level of county or

More evidence or stronger political will: exploring the feasibility of needle and syringe programs in Ukrainian prisons.

INTRODUCTION: In 2007, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended for prison authorities to introduce prison needle and syringe programs (PNSP) if they have any evidence that injecting drug use is taking place in prisons. This article presents descriptive evidence that injecting drug use takes place in Ukrainian prisons, it discusses how (denial of) access to injection equipment is regulated in the current system and what changes should be considered in order to implement PNSP. BACKGROUND: Ukrainian prisons still live by the laws and policies adopted in the Soviet Union. Besides laws and

Does free public transit increase physical activity and independent mobility in children? Study protocol for comparing children's activity between two Finnish towns with and without free public transit.

BACKGROUND: Children's habitual physical activity, including active travel and catching public transit (walking and cycling to and from destinations), and independent mobility (mobility without an adult) have decreased. Public transit trips are physically active and can provide access to hobbies independent of parents, but there is no device-measured data about children's total physical activity time following the introduction of free public transit. Our aim is to compare physical activity and independent mobility between children living in two Finnish towns, one with a recently introduced fre

Engineering Apprenticeships: Youth Transitions, Industrial Capital and the Role of Working-Class Households.

Using biographical methods, the study explores the lives of 34 young people undertaking engineering apprenticeships in Teesside, Northeast England. It examines why working-class youth in a deindustrialised region might be attracted to engineering, how they might secure apprenticeship, and the invaluable role households play in orchestrating and sustaining these relations. To understand such youth transitions we develop the concept of 'industrial capital', deployed by adult male family members to leverage employment opportunities in working-class neighbourhoods. Where apprenticeship studies ten
