Group size in ungulates is believed to reflect a balance between antipredator strategies and competition for resources. We studied chital (Axis axis) group sizes across habitat types representing variation in food availability and predator cover, along with predator density and chital density, within moist deciduous forests of Kanha National Park, India. Habitat-specific chital density was estimated using distance sampling followed by density surface modeling, while tiger and leopard densities (major predators of chital) were derived from camera-trap-based spatially explicit capture-recapture

Mosquito-borne diseases are considered a concern by the Ministry of Public Health, Thailand. Carbon dioxide (CO2)- and host-odor-based lures have been evaluated individually for their effectiveness in attracting mosquitoes. This study addressed a gap in mosquito surveillance by comparing 3 potential lures (yeast-generated CO2, BG-lure, and KU-lure) with UV-LED light traps at Kasetsart University, Bangkok, considering the effects of location types and collection periods. Over 48 trap-nights, a total of 1,713 mosquitoes were collected across 4 subsites (2 per location type: recreational park and

BACKGROUND: Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s. l.) and Neoehrlichia mikurensis are the most prevalent pathogenic bacteria found in Ixodes ricinus in Norway. Here we evaluate the prevalence of both bacteria and the density of infected ticks, key factors to assess the human infection risk. The study was performed in one location in southern Norway.
RESULTS: An overall prevalence of 12% for B. burgdorferi s. l. and 8% for N. mikurensis was found. The most prevalent B. burgdorferi s. l. genospecies was Borrelia afzelii, followed by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto and Borrelia garinii. The hig

BACKGROUND: Regional forecasts of the population aged 6-17 years can provide demographic denominators for education and school health planning, but they do not directly estimate health-service or workforce requirements. This study aimed to forecast the population aged 6-17 years across Kazakhstan's 20 territorial units through 2030 and to compare the historical accuracy of a focal age-shift cohort model with ARIMA and ETS benchmarks.
METHODS: Official aggregated population data for 2015-2025 were analyzed for 20 territorial units by region, sex, locality type, and single year of age. The coho

The western blacklegged tick, Ixodes pacificus Cooley and Kohls, is a significant public health concern due to its capacity to vector Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae), the causative agent of Lyme disease. To determine the influence of elevation on the seasonality and abundance of Ixodes pacificus nymphs in the Sierra Nevada foothills of California, we used a standardized flagging procedure to sample nymphs from rocks and logs at 16 sites during 2018 to 2020. We sampled a total of 4,720 rocks and logs during 168 surveillance events and collected 1,469 I. paci

A key aspect to optimise the Tenebrio molitor (TM) farm productivity is to find an optimal breeding density for adults. To this purpose, this study investigated, from an industrial perspective, the impact of four breeding densities (D1, D2, D3 and D4, equal to 0.8, 1.1, 1.3 and 1.6 adults/cm2, respectively) on mortality and reproductive performances of TM adults and larvae. Two weeks after pupae emergence, TM adults were randomly assigned to the four groups and housed in 48 breeding crates (60 × 40 × 14.5 cm; 12 crates/group). The trial consisted of 4 consecutive weeks of adult breeding (each

This paper looks into the MaxEnt model in a trial to comprehend the ecological and environmental conditions that propagate and drive the spread of Ebola Virus Disease in Africa. We use the MaxEnt model to assess risk determinants associated with the occurrence and distribution of EVD, taking into account non-correlated variables such as neighborhood mean temperature, rainfall, and human population density. Our findings indicate that among the factors that significantly shape the geographical distribution of EVD risk are human population density, annual rainfall, temperature variability, and se…

BACKGROUND: Key populations, including sex workers, are at high risk of HIV acquisition and transmission. Men who pay for sex can contribute to HIV transmission through sexual relationships with both sex workers and their other partners. To characterize the population of men who pay for sex in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), we analyzed population size, HIV prevalence, and use of HIV prevention and treatment.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We performed random-effects meta-analyses of population-based surveys conducted in SSA from 2000 to 2020 with information on paid sex by men. We extracted population size

The Democratic Republic of the Congo's (DRC) 10th known Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak occurred between August 1, 2018 and June 25, 2020, and was the largest EVD outbreak in the country's history. During this outbreak, the DRC Ministry of Health initiated traveller health screening at points of control (POC, locations not on the border) and points of entry (POE) to minimize disease translocation via ground and air travel. We sought to develop a model-based approach that could be applied in future outbreaks to inform decisions for optimizing POC and POE placement, and allocation of resource

The biophysical environment plays an important role in the spatio-temporal abundance and distribution of mosquitoes. This has implications for the spread of vectors and diseases they cause across diverse landscapes. Here, we assessed vector mosquito abundances in relation to large water bodies, from three malaria districts in a semi-arid environment. Furthermore, we explored thermal limits to activity of the dominant and most medically important malaria vector across malaria-endemic areas. Mosquitoes were trapped near permanent water bodies across different districts. Critical thermal limits (

Concerns over cat homelessness, over-taxed animal shelters, public health risks, and environmental impacts has raised attention on urban-cat populations. To truly understand cat population dynamics, the collective population of owned cats, unowned cats, and cats in the shelter system must be considered simultaneously because each subpopulation contributes differently to the overall population of cats in a community (e.g., differences in neuter rates, differences in impacts on wildlife) and cats move among categories through human interventions (e.g., adoption, abandonment). To assess this comp

Since its detection in Canada in the early 1990s, Ixodes scapularis, the primary tick vector of Lyme disease in eastern North America, has continued to expand northward. Estimates of the tick's broad-scale distribution are useful for tracking the extent of the Lyme disease risk zone; however, tick distribution may vary widely within this zone. Here, we investigated I. scapularis nymph distribution at three spatial scales across the Lyme disease emergence zone in southern Quebec, Canada. We collected ticks and compared the nymph densities among different woodlands and different plots and transe

I review recent results concerning the relationship between the inclusive fitness (IF) effect and standard measures of allele fitness in a finite-population, with attention to the effect of heterogeneity in population structure and nonadditive fitness effects. In both cases, existing theoretical work is somewhat technical and I try to provide a more transparent account. In a heterogeneous population it is known that inclusive fitness will generally fail to incorporate the effects of selection on the distribution of alleles among states unless a reproductive-value weighting is used. But even gi

Cereal leaf beetle, Oulema melanopus L., is a pest of small grains and the literature conflicts on whether it is more abundant in sparse or dense stands of wheat. Our objectives were to determine the impact of stand denseness on cereal leaf beetle abundance and to investigate the regional dispersion of cereal leaf beetles across North Carolina and Virginia. One-hundred twenty fields were sampled across North Carolina and Virginia during 2011 for stand denseness, and cereal leaf beetle eggs, larvae, and adults. Two small-plot wheat experiments were planted in North Carolina using a low and a hi

The aim of this study was to observe the occurrence of mosquito larvae, especially Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, in the tanks and axillae of bromeliads at the Bauru Municipal Botanical Gardens, São Paulo, Brazil, highlighting the epidemiological implications for the use of these plants. The majority of the larvae belonged to mosquitos from genus Culex, with only occasional findings of A. aegypti and A. albopictus. The use of screens for protection of the plants, exposure to sunlight, and larger amounts of water in the tanks may have influenced the occurrence and grouping of larvae.
