"Race" and "ethnicity" in biomedical research: how do scientists construct and explain differences in health?

Social and biomedical scientists, journal editors, and public health officials continue to debate the merits of the use of race and ethnicity in health-related research. As biomedical research focuses on issues of racial or ethnic health disparities, it remains unclear how biomedical scientists investigate race or ethnicity and health. This paper examines how biomedical researchers construct and analyze race or ethnicity in their studies and what conclusions they make about difference and health. Using content analysis of 204 biomedical research journal publications, which were supported by gr

A trypanosomiasis survey of wild animals in the Luangwa Valley, Zambia.

Between 1971 and 1974 546 wild animals of 34 species were examined for trypanosomes; 79 infections (9 mixed) were diagnosed and 29 stocks were cryopreserved. Of 14 stocks of the subgenus Trypanozoon tested by the blood incubation infectivity test three (two from Kobus ellipsiprymnus and one from Phacochoerus aethiopicus) retained their infectivity to rodents. There are indications that the number of animals harbouring trypanosomes is far in excess of those showing detectable parasitaemias even when using a combination of diagnostic methods. The standard microhaematocrit method involving micros

Trichinella spiralis in wild boars (Sus scrofa).

During the period 1.7. 1972--31.6. 1977 muscle samples from 137 wild boars were examined for Trichinella spiralis. Larvae of T. spiralis were demonstrated in 4 animals. The major part (83) of the wild boars examined, including the 4 positive ones, originated from one particular game park. The rate of infection with T. spiralis in the game park concerned was 4.8%. Calculated on the basis of the total of animals examined, the rate of infection was 2.9%.

Exploring climate-related health risks and behaviors among vulnerable populations in the eastern Mediterranean: the cases of Jewish and Bedouin Negev desert residents.

INTRODUCTION: The Negev region of Israel is susceptible to the impact of climate change, and future predictions include an increase in the intensity, length, and frequency of extreme weather events. The Negev is also home to a variety of vulnerable communities characterized by low socioeconomic status and inadequate availability of infrastructure as well as inadequate access to healthcare services. In this article we explored climate-related risks and coping practices of Jewish and Bedouin members of vulnerable communities in the Negev. METHODS: The article draws from 10 focus groups (n = 69

Staff Experiences With Electronic Initial Case Reports for Birth Defects Surveillance in Texas.

BACKGROUND: Electronic case reporting (eCR) is increasingly used by public health agencies to support disease surveillance. Its utility for birth defects surveillance remains unexplored. This project aimed to evaluate birth defects surveillance staff experiences and perceptions of eCR data to identify its challenges, benefits, and opportunities for improvement in birth defects surveillance. METHODS: Two virtual, 1-h focus groups were conducted with 15 staff from the Texas Birth Defects Registry (TBDR) who had participated in a pilot evaluation of electronic initial case reports (eICRs). The f

Racial, Ethnic, and Socioeconomic Disparities in Glaucoma Onset and Severity in a Diverse Nationwide Cohort in the United States.

PRÉCIS: Racial/ethnic minorities are diagnosed with glaucoma at younger ages, and Blacks are more likely to be diagnosed with moderate-to-severe glaucoma. In addition, we highlight a gap in the use of diagnosis codes. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze patterns of diagnosis coding usage and validate epidemiologic patterns of glaucoma onset and severity among primary glaucoma patients within the National Institutes of Health All of Us database. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We used International Classification of Disease diagnosis codes to build 4 cohorts of patients with mild, moderat

Peer-leaders' experiences and challenges in distributing HIV self-test kits in a rural fishing community, Rakai, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Distribution of HIV self-test kits by trained lay people in the community has resulted in increased uptake of HIV testing services among the targeted populations. However, little data exists on the experiences and challenges faced by trained lay people while distributing the kits. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted in Kasensero fishing community, Rakai, Uganda, in September 2019. We purposely selected 18 out of 34 peer-leaders that participated in a peer-led HIV self-testing intervention to participate in a post-intervention qualitative evaluation. The main intervention

Conceptualising the social networks of vulnerable children and young people: a systematic review and narrative synthesis.

PURPOSE: The relationship between social networks and health and wellbeing is increasingly demonstrated in vulnerable adult populations. This relationship for vulnerable children and young people has not hitherto been systematically reviewed. This narrative synthesis aims to consolidate research to provide a foundational basis for future health-related social network research and interventions for children and young people. METHODS: This mixed methods systematic review synthesises research investigating whole, egocentric social networks of 32 vulnerable child groups with a mean age below 18.

Lyme neuroborreliosis and bird populations in northern Europe.

Many vector-borne diseases are transmitted through complex pathogen-vector-host networks, which makes it challenging to identify the role of specific host groups in disease emergence. Lyme borreliosis in humans is now the most common vector-borne zoonosis in the Northern Hemisphere. The disease is caused by multiple genospecies of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato bacteria transmitted by ixodid (hard) ticks, and the major host groups transmit Borrelia genospecies with different pathogenicity, causing variable clinical symptoms in humans. The health impact of a given host group is a function of t

Presence of diverse Rickettsia spp. and absence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in ticks in an East Texas forest with reduced tick density associated with controlled burns.

As tick-borne diseases continue to emerge across the United States, there is need for a better understanding of the tick and pathogen communities in the southern states and of habitat features that influence transmission risk. We surveyed questing and on-host ticks in pine-dominated forests with various fire management regimes in the Sam Houston National Forest, a popular recreation area near Houston, Texas. Four linear transects were established- two with a history of controlled burns, and two unburned. Systematic drag sampling yielded 112 ticks from two species, Ixodes scapularis (n=73) and

Surveillance of Tonsillar Cancer Incidence Rates in Minority Groups vs Non-Hispanic Whites in Large US Metropolitan Areas.

BACKGROUND: For oropharyngeal (OP) cancers at anatomical sites regarded as related to human papillomavirus (HPV), surveillance using population-based cancer registries has shown that age-standardized incidence rates are higher in US non-Hispanic whites (NHWs) vs minority groups. Surveillance in large racially-ethnically diverse urban areas also should be considered. METHODS: Using the US Cancer Statistics database, age-standardized incidence rates per year were obtained for 2003–2013 for carcinomas of the tonsil, the OP site most strongly associated with HPV. Data were available for NHWs, non-

Bridging the gap: What have we done and what more can we do to reduce the burden of avoidable death in people with psychotic illness?

Despite overwhelming evidence demonstrating a persisting gap in life expectancy between those with psychotic illness and the general population, there has been no widespread implementation of interventions to improve the physical wellbeing of people with psychotic illness. This article explores opportunities to 'Bridge the Gap' in life expectancy. We describe an Australian evidence-based intervention that has substantially improved the physical health of young people recently commenced on antipsychotic medication. Further epidemiological research, accompanied by cultural change within mental h
